Have you ever thrown a catfish on the ice?

Did you do so from your seats in the lower bowl or did you walk down to the lower bowl to throw it?

Did you get kicked out of the arena?

Did other people in your immediate vicinity respond positively to you throwing said catfish?

Where do you buy a whole catfish?

Is the only appropriate time to do this right before the first puck drop of the game?

How did you transport the catfish into the arena? Do you have to conceal it as you walk through the gates? Would they confiscate it at the gates if they discovered it on your person?

I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS

I hope you find what you're looking for. I admit...it has crossed my mind. The only part I took care of was the catfish. I catch the little buggers all the time.

Never thrown one.

But every now and then I happened to actually see a person throwing one. It was always a guy. He was down by the glass and tossed it over.

He turned around and walked back up the stairs. Some people cheered him and one or two patted him on the back.

I don't think the ushers really did anything but once the guy got under the tunnel I don't know what happened.

Some people think it's an inside job, but I have no idea.

Good luck...

Hmm Had not thought about this. Seems plausible, though.

Transportation-wise, I was thinking you must have to wrap it in like cellophane and newspaper and slide it in your pants waist. But what do I know.

edit: Do you think it is a tradition best saved for only the Wings? Only home playoff games against the Wings? Haven't they thrown octopuses (sp?) here? How are they able to get away with that? I feel like someone would get beaten and dragged away to the depths of Joe Louis Arena and never heard from again if someone threw a catfish up there.

I'm pretty sure that ones been tossed at a Sharks playoff game too but I might be mistaken.

I would imagine you would need to wrap it up and then maybe plastic wrap it to your leg or stomach or something. Never snuck in a catfish but me and my sister are pretty good about getting 20 oz drinks and Subway into the arena. If you've got a jersey on, it's pretty easy to sneak things in the waist band of your pants...

(though fyi, in Columbus they make you lift your shirt so they can check there, if you ever try to sneak in a flask, put it in your sock)

Originally it was sort of an inside job. One of the local inhouse resturants brought the catfish in and it was given to the person that threw it on the ice. The person was escorted to a different part of the arena, to give the apperance he was being ejected.

You say originally. So has it morphed into anyone is "allowed" to do it? Or is it still an inside job?

I have no idea now, but that resturant is no longer there.

There's a clip from 104.5 on the internets somewhere where the guy who threw it called Plaster's show and gave them the lowdown on everything.

Never done it but I have some advice.

1) Just catch one if you can. (hot dogs are great catfish bait btw)
2) Put it in a freezer size zip-loc bag.
3) Wear a winter jacket with some fluff to it. Put it in a pocket
4) Whenever you want to toss the fish, choose a decent location unless you feel comfortable where you are at
5) Enjoy the game

I've always wondered about the smuggling of catfish into the arena too. Wouldn't there be some sort of aroma around the smuggler?

I was sitting near a guy who had one...didn't smell at all. He had it wrapped in plastic and it was under his leather jacket. I knew him and was surprised he was sitting in my section because he usually sat somewhere else. I noticed he was acting kind of nervous, but didn't think that much about it.

I sat down in 104 then. He waited until a good time and then jumped up and threw the fish over the glass. The ushers took him away after someone "ratted him out". He told me later that he'd gone upstairs and watched the game but I can't remember now whether it was from a suite or whether it was in the restaurant upstairs. Anyway, that instance was definitely set up. Even the ratting out was part of the plan.

It was a different person who called in to Plaster's show, but it was a similar set up. I knew both of the throwers and met another thrower called Catfish Kenny later on, but was never really in on the action.

Those were fun times.

Yeah I couldn't find it. I think it got posted a long, long time ago on the NP.com boards and didn't make the transfer on those boards nor did it make the transfer from my old computer to my new computer.

It's been so long now I am fuzzy on the details. It was a stoppage in play, but that's about all I can remember about it. Sorry!

Dude. Throwing a catfish onto the ice at the Joe would be EPIC. Whoever had the guts/awesomeness to do that would be a true patriot! Ha!

I feel that there are lots of appropriate times during a game to throw a catfish on the ice, not necessarily just beforehand. I mean really, what stoppage is a BAD time for a catfish?!

I dunno if I've ever seen one against any other team but the Wings...although I do think anytime during the playoffs would be appropriate. It is a little funnier against the Wings though, hahaha.

Are you planning on launching a catfish soon?! Because it's been TOO long since we've seen one! I applaud you!

I desperately want someone to throw one during one of our famous TV timeout ovations.

I know that Wolfy used to give people a catfish to throw at the game. Once they threw it and were kicked out of the arena they were allowed to go back to Wolfy's a drink for free.

That doesn't mean that he was the only instigator. Maybe just one of many.

If that happened, I think the camera/radio microphones would bust. They're already at the breaking point during those as it is.

It's already happened. Too bad I think we were losing like 4-1 or something and then the guy threw the fish on the ice towards the end of the game.

I'd recommend talking to owners or managers at bars near the arena and see if anyone is still supportive of fish tossin' first. If you may be kicked out of the arena you might as well find out if something like what Predaceous was talking about is still going on so you can make the most of it.

As far as smuggling it in, I would wrap it up in plastic, put it in a ziplock freezer bag, try to find a fanny pack, and toss a jersey on over it.

Just a thought but the old mustard jerseys are quite a bit thicker than the normal ones, I dont know if that would be an advantage to appear less lumpy or backfire and act as a dutch oven to the catfish.
