I just don't see Hamilton making the team straight out of the WHL. He'll most likely bolster our AHL team, which really isn't so terrible. I'm kinda jealous of the OKC fans actually because they'll likely get: Marincin, Davidson, Teubert, Pitlick, Lander, Hamilton and Martindale to go along with the studs they already have. Pretty effffing sweet.
As for the Oilers line up, I think I agree with what Greggor and Spector were talking about a few weeks ago. They mentioned that we need quality stop-gap players to bridge the gap until we sort out who is part of the core and who is tradable.
First off they have to get rid of the underachievers: Brule, Cogliano, Fraser, JFJ, Stortini
The assumption here is also that Omark is part of the package to move up into the top 10 of the draft (one of a small few trades I could see for him).
With that in mind, I'd suggest scraping the 3rd scoring line as a legitimate theory and instead build a checker 3rd line. A line with muscle, physicality and defensive responsibility. I'd suggest targeting a physical left winger, a faceoff stud and if not Ryan Jones (because of the contract disagreement) for the right wing, then a suitable replacement.
LW: Glencross, Clarkson, Upshall, Pyatt (Upshall and Clarkson are priority)
C: Madden, Nichol, Fiddler, Konopka, Smithson, Reasoner, Goc (Konopka and Fiddler are priority)
RW: Jones, LaRose, Gordon, Ward, Eaves (Jones and LaRose are priority)
Then behind that you call up and keep O'Marra as your permanent 4th line center. His physicality and defensive abilities make him perfect for that spot. Keep Mac and Reddox. Sign a middleweight who is also an agitator and have him and Mac switch in and out depending on the team you play because if you play Mac against a team without big time fighter, he's a liability.
Middleweight/Agitator: Ruutu, Belak (maybe), Glass (If we have already signed Upshall or Konopka then you don't need the agitator aspect).
Then your bottom 6 looks like this, maybe:
Clarkson - Fiddler - Jones
Reddox - O'Marra - MacIntyre
Extra forward: Ruutu
Total cost is: 9.17 mil
You can put Ruutu anywhere in the bottom 6 that you need some extra physicality.
I'm not a fan of going out and paying a premium for fillers. It never turns out well. The best way to build a team, all the way up and all the way down is through the draft. We have lot's of guys who are hard workers, enthusiastic and are willing to fill a role such as a bottom 6 forward.
As soon as Horcoff is our pure 3rd line centre, and Gagner and Mystery man X are 1-2 down the middle, we are a playoff team.
