Previous Stanley Cup Champion Records Feb-Apr

Hey guys, I compiled the records of the last 4 Stanley Cup Champions leading up to the playoff to compare to ours. The general consensus seems to be don't worry, a slump around this time is a common thing that should not have any effect on our playoff play. Well, let's see how true that is...

Blackhawks -2010

February - Didn't play much, Olympic break
March - 6-7-2
April - 5-0-1

Penguins - 2009

February - 7-4-1
March - 10-1-2
April - 4-1-1

Red Wings - 2008

February - 4-8-2
March - 10-2-1
April - 2-0-1

Ducks - 2007

February - 5-5-2
March - 10-3-2
April - 1-0-2

Canucks - Contender 2011

February - 8-5-0
March - 1-1-0
April -

So aside from the Hawks who didn't turn it up until April (likely due to the long break) most teams start rolling in March and take that into the playoffs. A lot of people are saying they're not worried, well heck, maybe it isn't time to worry YET but I believe a sense of urgency should be starting to creep in.

After looking at these stats, what do you think? I almost feel like not watching anymore until they string two wins together, but deep down, I know I won't be able to do that.. Haha.. Thoughts?

I think we'll find out a couple games after both Higgins and Bieksa join the lineup. We'll be at full strength short Edler. If we can get hot starting mid-March, we should be in great shape.

I think the trade deadline contributes to a lull by distracting some teams. NP.

The Canucks game has been suffering with all the defensive injuries - it made the team focus more on team defense with forwards coming back and severely limited the puck movement and transition game from defensemen to forwards. Overall our entire strategy for games has changed the last little while. We're slowly overcoming the injuries and we'll hopefully see a return to a faster paced and opportunistic system.

The last dozen games are a little concerning, but only to a point. I think its a fallacy that teams can't "flip a switch" come playoffs. Teams do it all the time.

As uninspiring as the last month or so has been, I have no doubt that the Canucks will be able to elevate that level of play when required. They'd better.

Still, a President's Trophy (and an Art Ross Trophy) are up for grabs. It would pretty cool to get those.

If we still are where we are now by late-March, it is a pretty big concern.

Once the playoffs are closer, Bieksa will be back, and I Salo will be getting lots more ice time. I am not concerned.

Our offensive woes are alarming. The Sedins are either non-factors or look like crap out there. Kesler looks dogged and the effects of having inferior talent on his line is starting to show as other teams are keying on him more. Our third and fourth lines aren't really scoring but you can't really expect them to shoulder the load of our offense either.

Yes we're feeling the effects of losing Edler and Bieksa (wow, good thing we didn't give this guy away for free eh?), but at the same time there's no excuse for the lousy, uninspired play of our offense.

I'm not worried as long as we keep the #1 seed by the end of the season.

We're missing our #1 defenceman and Bieksa. Replace Rome/Tanev with Edler/Bieksa and our lineup improves drastically. We also haven't seen what Higgins can do yet.

Top teams have the ability to turn it up when it counts. There's no doubt in my mind that the whole team will return to their December-January form in April.
