Leafs signing every UFA on the market
TSN, SportsNet, The Toronto Star, The Toronto Sun, and the Globe and Mail are all reporting that every free agent available this year has instructed their agent "to do whatever it takes to make them a Leaf" because they all want to play in Toronto. The Fan590 is reporting that the Leafs got a special exemption from Bettman and the $39 million cap does not apply to them. League officials stated that “ … Toronto must be able to keep their legacy as the center of the hockey universe.”
The new Leaf line up looks like this:
The Knock Out Line: Lindros, Kariya and Allison
The Swedish Line: Forsberg, Sundin and Naslund.
The Old Fart Line: Roberts, Nieuwendyk and Messier
The Rookie Line: Crosby, Malkin and Ovechkin (just a few trade details to work out to make this last line come together)
The 13th forward would be Mike Modano.
Defence: Foote, Niedermeyer, Pronger, Leetch, Raflaski and Stevens
The 7th defenceman would be Derian Hatcher
Goal: Khabibulin with Curtis Joseph backing him up.
Not to overlook any detail, the club also has reportedly signed a back up head coach, none other than Scotty Bowman. Bowman is reported to have said, "How can anyone turn down the opportunity to coach such an historically significant team with such a rich hockey heritage?"
The next time I hear it reported that some free agent is 'supposed' to have said that he wants to play in Toronto, I think I'll just toss my cookies. I don't think the Toronto media has sorted out the difference between Fantasy Hockey Pools and the new CBA. But then again, they think the world ends at the edge of the city.
