Ducks Acquire Brad Winchester for 3rd
Quote:
The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired left wing Brad Winchester from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a third-round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Winchester, 29 (3/1/81), is a veteran of 304 career NHL games, scoring 30-26=56 points with 436 penalty minutes (PIM) with Edmonton, Dallas and St. Louis. He has appeared in 57 contests for the Blues this season, scoring 9-5=14 points with 86 PIM. Among Blues leaders, Winchester ranked third in hits (120) and PIM. The 6-5, 230-pound winger appeared in his 300th NHL contest on Feb. 21 vs. Chicago, earning an assist in the game.

A 3rd is much for Winchester. But then again the draft doesn't appear to be deep, GM's seem to agree. And we got a 3rd for Lapierre so that makes up for it.

I've always liked Winchester, unfortunately it seems Sexton will remain on the 3rd line unless Ruutu or Winchester can play the right side.

Would like a checking line of Ruutu/McMillan/Winchester.

So is the general consensus Winchester > LaPierre? Or vice versa/ a wash?

Slightly inflated price as I think he's just a 4th liner. Still not anything of consequence though.

Some size and hitting is needed. But then why did we get all the other 4th liners, like Ruutu, Lapierre, Voros, etc? I guess he could be a guy to stand in front of the net on the PP too.

Winchester is the smarter player, while Lapierre has a little more aggression to his game. I like Winchester over Lappy just for the fact that he has good hockey sense while still being a physical player. I don't think you'll see him yapping away or taking dumb penalties. Lappy is too often chirping instead of focusing on what's going on during the game. I think that's how he keep getting in coach's doghouses. I'm not sure there's really a winner between them, just depends on what kind of player you're looking for.

I think Winchester is an ideal 4th line left wing. He is what Voros was supposed to be. Winchester is a better fighter than Voros and a better hockey player.

Good moves getting Winchester in for 3rd and Lappy out for 3rd. The team just got more physical.

OT. I guess the trade deadline finally showed HFBoards needs some new servers/gear.

I don't mind throwing a 3rd rounder for a useful 4th liner. Particularly if he is a good fit and Murray re-signs him.

Look at a really good draft like 2003:

7 of the 32 3rd round picks are NHLers. Of those 7 only 1 is considered a top 6 forward/top 4 d-man or starting goalie.

Ducks 3rd round pick history:

1993 - Valeri Karpov 76 NHL games
1994 - Craig Reichert 3 NHL games
1995 - Mike LeClerc 341 NHL games
1996 - no pick
1997 - Jay Legault 0 NHL games
1998 - no pick
1999 - Niclas Havelid 628 NHL games
2000 - no pick
2001 - Joel Stepp 0 NHL games
2002 - Brian Lee 0 NHL games
2003 - Shane Hynes 0 NHL games
2003 - Juha Alen 0 NHL games
2004 - Kyle Klubertanz 0 NHL games
2005 - Jason Bailey 0 NHL games
2006 - John De Gray 0 NHL games
2007 - Maxim Macenauer 0 NHL games - decent prospect
2008 - Josh Brittain 0 NHL games - long shot prospect
2008 - Marco Cousineau 0 NHL games - long shot prospect
2008 - Brandon McMillan 41 NHL games
2009 - Igor Bobkov 0 NHL games - decent prospect
2010 - no pick

Historically the odds of a 3rd round pick being a productive NHL player are around 12 - 14% from the studies that I have read. The Ducks are actually running a little above this percentage.

While it is true that 3rd round picks and such typically don't amount to much, there's 2 things.

1) the going rate is typically a _ round pick plus a prospect for the line the player plays. So in this sense Murray got rid of the prospect and just paid a higher pick instead. So compared to market value it seems just a little high. Although this year's picks seem to be worth less so maybe he did pay market value.

2) When comparing the % chance of a prospect panning out, you also have to consider that trade deadline moves (including this one) are typically for pending UFAs. That's where mcdonald's "if Murray re-signs him" really comes in. It is worth so much more if he stays rather than just leaves as a UFA.

Murray had a funny quote though. "We tried to get him last year in free agency and he wanted to go back to St. Louis. I told him, ‘Now we got you.’”

I think the other thing is the small amount of teams that are out of the playoff picture. When there are maybe 25 teams in the playoff picture and only 5 non playoff teams, those 5 teams can take advantage of the sellers market and get a 3rd rounder for a depth player.

I think Winchester will help this team more then people realize, he has a pretty positive reputation around the league and I think is pretty underrated.

I like what I saw from him last game. Ideally we'd be able to keep him and Ruutu next season as well, if they'd take a pay cut. I really like both players.

Bob give him the extension. I don't want to see him go back to St. Louis when summer comes.

11 hits in 2 games.

Both Ruutu and Winchester really bring grit to the team that has been missing for a while. Like both additions.

Murray should sign both Ruutu and Winchester to multi year extensions to solidify the 3rd and 4th lines for the next 2-3 seasons.
