Stats are as follows: Age(of season before contract), Goals (season before contract/career high before), Assists (before/high), Games played (career before contract/season before):

R.J. Umberger---> 26 years- 13/20 G - 37/37 A - 228/74 GP -----> 4 years 3.75 m/p
Patrick Sharp---> 26/27 years- 36/20 G prior - 26/26 A - 276/80 GP ----> 4 years 3.9 m/p
Jarret Stoll---> 26 years- 14/22 G - 22/46 A - 286/81 GP ----> 4 years 3.6 m/p
Ryane Clowe---> 26 years- 22/22 G - 30/30 A - 162/71 GP ----> 4 years 3.625 m/p

Brooks Laich---> 27 years- 18ish/25 G - 27ish/34 A - 475ish/82 GP

Each of the four listed players signed with the teams that owned their rights prior to the contract, with Umberger being the only one who hadn't previously played for the team who signed him.

edit: Damn, same stuff, Clowe, Umberger both RFAs prior to deals...

Seems like Brooks Laich should land a contract in the same area as the four above if he chooses to sign with the Capitals, though he's got more of a proven track record of consistency than the four above, already having 3-4 20 goal seasons. I'd say 3.5 sounds about right staying as a Capital, 4.25-4.75 on the open market (which may seem high.)
I think your spot on, 3.5 - 3.75 on the Caps and 4-4.75 on the open market probably looking at 5 year contracts with some sort of NTC. 4.75 is a bit rich because I doubt he's going to break 30 goals but if you can get him close to 4.0 that's a pretty solid deal given everything he brings to the table.

He'll likely get over four million if he wants it. Colby Armstrong, a much weaker player, got over three million and he's a less talented winger. A capable second line center that will perform in every zone and brings leadership?

Those guys are second only to defenseman in getting overpaid.

Laich is primarily a LWer.

My guess is that he will get Mason Raymond or Thomas Fleishmann money.
MR 25 goals, 28 assists $2.55
TF 23 goals, 28 assists $2.6
BL 14 goals, 22 assists to date this year

Brooksie is one of my favorite players....but I'm calling it now....at $4mil+ per he'll likely be a disappointment anywhere he goes.

That might be extremely high....

Raymond and Fleischmann were both RFAs though.

A rough estimate on my part, how many games do you think he spent in the bottom 6?

As a Caps fan I'd love to have Laich back next season but he isn't worth more than $3 mil a year to them because they have lots of prospects to step into his shoes. His shooting has gotten progressively worse the past 3 years and his career high in points was last year at 59 and at 27 I doubt he will be improving on that.

But brings a versatility that he can play on any line in a pinch at any position. The only place he hasn't played is goal for us. His versatility is a sought after commodity. This is what would earn him slightly higher returns in my never humble opinion.

Agreed but I don't think anyone is going to try and sign him to play centre.

I'd say a shade over $3 mill per year on a long-term deal. I think $4 mill a year would be a definite overpay but I could see someone doing it.

On the open market another team might pay upwards to 4 million for him. On the Caps he can expect around 3-3.4 million. Personally I wouldn't pay more than 3 million after this season. But the biggest factor is the playoffs. If they go deep and he is clutch his contract number will go up.

I want the Islanders to sign him so freaking bad. There is literally no way he'd want to go from a team like Washington to a team like the Islanders, but if Wang is willing to put out the money, I think we should overpay. We are a young team that has finally taken a turn for the better, and with the right additions, we can start our ascent in the standings. And we can stay there.

I'd be willing to offer Brooks close to 4 on a 4/5 year deal.. and yes, that's a little ridiculous, but he wouldn't look our way otherwise.

He is a quality, quality hockey player. Washington will fight like heck to keep him.
