There's Shampoo nearby the Electric Factory, but that's more of a nightclub. Plus, I've never been and can't comment on the atmosphere, drink selection, or prices. If that isn't your thing and you don't mind walking a few blocks there's always Finnigan's Wake and McFaddens, both on 3rd.
There is parking all around the Sh*tbox (I use the term Sh*tbox affectionately, I love seeing shows at the E Factory) with side streets and areas surrounding the venue. Just drive up close to the venue and you'll see people with parking signs flagging you down. The side streets and allies are cramped, usually packed full with people blowing hippie crack and ensconcing the area with empty beer bottles. Pretty much always a good time.
I hate that venue. I was there a few weeks ago and I remembered how much I hate the place. Its always overcrowded, smells bad and its hard to get a beer.
the electric factory offers all the sonic wonderment of listening to your favorite band inside of a tin can.
i usually cabbed it there, they do have a parking lot you have to pay for or look for nearby street parking. there are a couple schools not far away, at night i imagine there'd be few cars but they might be jerks about parking there because of the proximity.

I recorded this at the Electric Factory and I will tell you, that the sound quality on YT is no where near what it sounds like uncompressed. The place is pretty good for sound, and as far as Philadelphia venues are concerned, the Factory has been putting shows on since the 70's and they know how to work a soundboard.

I've been there a handful of times and it always sounded pretty bad. The Tower Theater lends a much better audio experience. I don't really care if the Factory has been putting on shows since 1870, it's still a giant, empty rectangle begging for crappy audio. Even the Troc is better than the Factory, in my opinion.
The First Unitarian Church is the best Philly venue.
I've been there a handful of times and it always sounded pretty bad. The Tower Theater lends a much better audio experience. I don't really care if the Factory has been putting on shows since 1870, it's still a giant, empty rectangle begging for crappy audio. Even the Troc is better than the Factory, in my opinion.

We can all rattle off the bands that we've seen in that basement and everyone can clash on types of music but calling the FUC the best place to see a concert in the city is ludicrous.
As for going to the balcony, I agree, why waste the experience up there.
To avoid the annoying teenagers. I stopped liking Thursday after going to see them for the 8th time, that time at the E-Factory. That show left such a bad taste in my mouth that I never wanted to see that band again.
Mosh to Thursday? You've got to be kidding me.
Plus, nothing can beat seeing Thursday at the Church when you're 15 years old and love that kind of crap.

Eh, I used to be into hardcore and the Church was the best venue for hardcore shows. The Tower is big, has a barrier and seats. Not a good combo for a good hardcore show. Nevertheless, I saw Steely Dan at the Tower about a year ago and it was by far one of the best shows I've been to, but most of the credit goes to the performers and not the venue.
Would you rather see your favorite bands in a 20'x60' church basement where the stage height doesn't reach your knees, or the huge Tower Theater? Yeah, thought so.
I'm not saying the Church has the best sound quality, I'm saying it offers the most incredible live experience.

It was to Even Flow. As soon as the opening started, the pit started (you know that opening riff).
About midway through, one of the kids knocked down a guy who was at the "front" of the pit, back facing it, as he was obviously looking at the stage, and he got knocked down. He gets back up and grabbed the kid that hit him by the next and yelled "What the **** is wrong with you? This is a Pearl Jam concert!" The pit immediately died. It was pretty funny actually.
