Which UFA should Gainey go after?

Here is my list in order starting with the player I think gainey should go after first, with the salary that might be able to ink them.

Markus Naslund 5.5
Scott Nierdermayer 5.75
Paul Kariya 4.0
Peter Forsberg 5.0
Glen Murray 3.0
Sergei Gonchar 3.0
Mike Modano 3.5
Sergei Zubov 2.5
Adrien Aucoin 2.0
Zigmund Palffy 3.0
Al MacInnis 3.5
Teemu Selanne 1.5
Martin Lapointe 2.0
Sandis Ozolinsh 1.0

The best(realistics) scenario in my mind would be that the habs get Kariya and Aucoin.

I would love to see Naslund, Forsberg or Nierdermayer but I don't think Gainey will be able to get them

Your numbers are very low. Forsberg will get a max deal. So will neidermeyer.

My Ideal scenario is Aucoin (3) Kovalev (4.5)

Lines would be

Zednick - Koivu - Kovalev
Perez - Ribs - Ryder
Higgins - Bonk - Bulis
Sunny - Begin - Ward

extras: Hossa, Plekanek, and a UFA goon

Aucoin - Markov
Souray - Komisarek
Rivet - Hainsey

Extra (Bouillion)

Theo
Huet
Danis

If Gonchar only takes 3 and Aucoin only takes 2 then sign them both up!

5 M $ for 2 quality defenseman is a bargain in today's world.

Personally, I don't know how realistic it is to expect to get two players of that caliber. I still think Kariya will be able to command quite a bit of money. Despite a bad season in Colorado, he is still on of the premier players in the league. And with the NHL hopefully opening up, 90+ points would not be out of the question from him.

As for Aucoin, I don't want to start this discussion again, but he really is not the missing piece in our defence imo. He would be a good addition no doubt (not my first choice) but he's hardly the talent that will push us over the top and make us a contender.

When will people get over our smurfdum?!

Bonk is a big presence on our checking line which will be lining up against the Sundins, Primeaus, and Thorntons of the league for the most part. Kovalev is no shrimp, and Zednik and Koivu can both hold their own with big boys. The second line may have some size problems, which is why a Dagenais or Hossa might be better than Perezhogin there for now, but if Perez lives up to full potential as soon as this year, that line might be able to get by on skill alone.

Then the fourth line (I would move Sunny to Higgins's spot on the third until Chris can steal it from him) should be Begin, Ward, and an enforcer, which is a rough, physical, energy line.

Too small? I don't think so. Especially not with the new rules.

Signing Kovalev and a very solid d-man would be my dream. A guy like Aucoin, Rafalski, Zubov, or Rathje could possibly make us a contender. And if Kovy wants to bolt elsewhere (Pittsburgh?), I'd like into Selanne or Murray, cause I don't really think Forsberg / Naslund / Kariya (unless he comes with Teemu) are realistic.

That lineup in my opinion is weak.

Perez and Higgins are completely unproven: we have no idea if they're really ready to step up and play and you've got them playing major roles on the team. I'm not saying they won't but if you actually want to contend (and I think the Habs -should- contend every year, no reason not to, and Gainey implied it, although never trust what a GM says, but anyway...) you need more veteran talent than what you've got.

Ryder had 1 solid season. While I'm hoping he repeats AND improves, I wouldn't hang my hat on that. And Ribeiro is still, in my opinion, a question mark. He shows flashes of brilliance and he did get 65 or whatever # of points last year (no, I didn't bother checking) but with Perez on the wing...give me an experienced, quality vet there to help Ribeiro, otherwise he's carrying that line.

I'm a huge fan of young guys - and I really do hope that our young guys can step in and have a huge impact. There's almost nothing more exciting than seeing a guy like Ryder step in and have an impact (although remember his playoffs: eek, a little more attention from the opposition and no experience bites you in the rear almost every time). So I'm not trying to disparage the young guys or say they're crap, I just hesitate to throw them into very important roles on the team *and* expect the team to contend seriously (or at least make the playoffs and go a round or two).

Thats exactly how I want to see the line-up only as much as I do like him i'd like to trade Sundstrom at the draft for a pick, as he does have value out there and give the spot to Plekanec or Hossa.

How is that line up any smaller than the one we iced last time we played and made the playoffs? It isn't, it's bigger. The only change I'd like to see would be to put Hossa on the third instead of Higgins and put Higgins with Begin and Ward
