Caps Allow Varlamov To Walk If Offer Sheeted?

The question is in the title, would the Caps allow Varly to walk if he's signed to an offer sheet? Considering that he's barely played this season, why should they spend more than $1M to re-sign him? And at that price, why not take a shot if you're the Isles, TB, Edmonton or the like?

The Caps don't need him with Neuvy and Holtby looking so sharp this season. Plus, it would help their future to grab a couple first rounders, thoughts?

Not unless the offer sheet is ridiculous.

In that same regard, no team is going to sign a player that's so oft injured to a ridiculous offer sheet.

There is a number for every team where each of its players is concerned, beyond which they take the picks, let the player go and replace that cap hit with other players, but it would be surprising to see this guy get a big offer.

At $2M, they match and keep him. At much over $3M, they probably let him go. Is someone giving this player a $3M deal and term? I suppose it's possible, but I'd be surprised. The goalie market is filled with more than 60 NHL-caliber goaltenders.

I would love to see Varly on the Avs but only if it is far below $3M because it would be ridicoulous to lose a first round pick because of offer sheeting a goalie.
Cannot imagine a team to do this and I dont see the Caps let him walk for less than that as well.

Depending on how much the cap goes up, can the Caps even afford to match $2.25M or 2.50M? I don't think they would.

i think as drake said, you are barking up the wrong tree. there are plenty of goaltender of quality that can be gotten for less than a stupid offer sheet contract.

Yes. We aren't really in cap trouble, and we have tons of options as to how to spend our money next year.

And if we were to somehow get into cap trouble, we'd move someone else before Varlamov.

Guess Bobrovsky isn't that good, either.

Not to mention the fact that Varlamov plays behind what many people consider to be a vastly inferior defense.

Caps turned things around, though.
They are playing some really good D this year.

Still Varly is really very talented.

* Yea, he is that good. His "A" game is about as good as there is right now.
* He is very athletic and doesnt manage his health well. He plays too hard and can't handle the load.
* The Caps defense is better than their rep, but the Flyers defensive lineup is better than Caps by a couple of steps.

The bottom line is that until one of the Caps goalies show they can stay healthy over the course of an NHL season, we're going to hold onto all three. They're not cost prohibitive at this point, and the return for goalies on the market isn't great. No reason to move them now.

Neuvirth makes 1.15M for the next two years, Varlamov should earn equal or less than that, so to answer your question, if someone offers him over 2M yes I would definitely let him go.

I hope the Caps draft Conz this year,"the perfect replacement" for them.

It will be really fascinating to see how they manage their 3 headed goalie monster. It's sort of like the Habs situation with Price/Halak, only with another goalie in the picture and 2 injury prone goalies.

should the Caps lose Varlamov, the perfect replacement is already with the team, Braden Holtby.

I just don't see anyone giving Varlamov any kind of crazy contract given how weak the market is for goaltenders, and Varlamov's injury history.

Not sure other teams will give him the kind of money to make the caps let him go, varly is injured too often.

Nonetheless, he is a very talented goalie

Oft-injured, relatively unproven young goalie, can't see a lot of teams offering a big contract.

Maybe Florida if Vokoun takes his talents out of South Beach.

They're not going to offsheet a young goalie with Markstrom coming. They'll be in the market for a low-priced veteran.

Nobody wants to offer a monster contract to a young unproven goalie.

Caps will match anything that is not unreasonable.

Therefore, _______________

last year's numbers:
$1,020,348 or below None
Over $1,020,348 to $1,545,981 Third-round choice
Over $1,545,981 to $3,091,963 Second-round choice
Over $3,091,963 to $4,637,944 First-round and third-round choice

expect a slight bump, depending on what average salary came in as this year.

no way anyone goes into the 1st+3rd range for him.
2nd round range seems to much to give up in terms of the pick.
3rd round range, even at the top end, the caps probably match.
no compensation the caps definitely match.

i dont see him as a good offersheet target.

I agree it's not likely but certainly think it's possible. A 1st and 3rd rounder wouldn't be unbelievably costly because he has the upside, certainly. Big risk, HUGE reward IMO. Why shouldn't a desperate franchise take a gamble, especially when this could turn out to be their savior?
