Chara has a phone hearing with the league so it won't be more than four games. I would guess two or three. Malicious intent is difficult to prove but, then again, where was it in the cases of Ovechkin's suspendable offenses?

Yeah, this hit reminds me a lot of the Ovechkin Campbell hit, only even more vicious.

Why is the new thread still named "Dave Steckel's Playground?"

Can't we come up with something better?

Just peeked at the standings. A Bos-MTL first round would be pretty interesting. 'Course that would currently pair the Caps with the Rags.

So with Chicago playing the second half of a back-to-back in Tampa, I decided to finally look it up. These are the teams with one portion of a back to back being in Tampa Bay:

Boston: @fla-@tam
Washington: @fla-@tam
NY Rangers: @tam-@fla
Buffalo: @fla-@tam
Toronto: @car-@tam, @tam-@fla
Atlanta: home-@tam, @tam-home, home-@tam
Florida: home-@tam, home-@tam, @tam-home
Ottawa: @fla-@tam
Detroit: @tam-@fla
Chicago: @fla-@tam
Phoenix: @phi-@tam
Nashville: @dal-@tam
Columbus: @tam-@fla
Colorado: @car-@tam

That's 19 of Tampa Bay's 41 home games being part of a back-to-back for the visiting team, with 13 of those being the second game.

(Note: This isn't counting any games where Tampa Bay is the visiting team for anyone's back-to-back, which there were many, many examples of. This is just where Tampa hosts a team during their back-to-back.)

Totally absurd.

Nice pic. The message, don't try to go wide on Chara. It's not really rocket science. That is how big defensemen sometimes have to play against smaller faster forwards. And it's been like that for a long time. He is not holding the back of his head running his face into the corner buckle in a wrestling ring. That looks like a classic rub out into the boards, the timing of where they were, random. Chara is not a dirty player. Do folks expect him to hang his arms at his side?

i think the best description ive heard on this play is that it was unnecessary. chara knew what he was doing. he's not dirty, but he can be mean. my read is that chara was hitting for effect. meaning he intended to hurt(not injure) maxp.

chara fully intended for his upper body to hit that partision. i dont think he intended to nearly decapitate the guy or end his career.

it was a mistake. shouldnt have happened.

That's the benefit of being so close to the Panthers and relatively far from everyone else. Teams love to schedule both of them on one trip.

You have to link to an actual image file, which twitpic (and a lot of other image hosting sites) make it difficult to do. I use imgur, which for whatever reason still acts exactly like an image hosting site should. I have no idea how they make money.

The Hab was skating straight at the partition. Chara met his victim halfway. They both should have known about the partition. Pacman could have done a classic hockey stop on a dime but tested fate instead, a mistake against a guy that size whose team is losing 4 nil in that area of the ice.

While looking up the Tampa Bay back-to-back numbers I posted above, I noticed this:

I knew they were good, but not top-3-in-everything good. Dayum.

I think its rather presumptous to think that chara knew exactly where he was in relation to that end glass. Its not like the dude skated shoulder to shoulder up the bench and then WHAM! He initiated contact and followed through like he's done a million times.

There's just such a confluence on events and variables that go into a collision that causes this type of injury. These guys play on instinct that's been driven into their subconscious after repetition for several years. It just so happened that Max hit all the branches on the fault tree and wound up hurt.

how many games do you think he deserves for what you seemingly believe to be a deliberate attempt to injure?

Again I see nothing wrong with Chara's actions. Its NHL hockey, not recess during kindergarden.

I think the best comparison to Chara's hit was Ovy's hit on Campbell last year. It wasn't deliberately dirty, but something went wrong. With Ovy, it was Campbell hitting a rut as he tried to apply the brakes, with Chara, it was the stanchion. I think the two hits while completely different in immediate nature, are similar in root causes.

It is an interesting theory about the "new" rules reducing stick and holding obstruction actually makes the game more dangerous. More speed. Cant use stick or arms. Have to make split second decisions on when and how to use your body. Not everything is under your control once you make decision to attempt a hit....

Chara hit is one example. But for me what I'd like to see the league allow is putting your hand on someone and "guiding" them into the boards as compared to having to push. I really think this rule change could help address a lot of the unnecessary boarding.
