Kings back to Europe?

I don't like it. It seems like teams take a while to adjust for a few weeks after they return. A strong start is so crucial to next season, I really don't see the point in participating in this marketing stunt anymore. Maybe there is more pressure to go since the Kings are a "big market" team.

Thoughts?

But it is said to be a great bonding experience for the team and maybe that would be a helpful thing for us next season?

Tuff to say if its worth it or not.

I guess we can start adding this to the list of excuses the team will use next season, coupled with them still being considered inexperienced and learning how to be winners and that they're still ahead of schedule in terms of where they should be.

Meh, we'll go to Europe if you put us in the Winter Classic in the next two years.

Ya know that is an excellent point, why not ask the league for something in return? Why not tell the league that we'll do it if we can get in the classic?

Its not a bad idea.

Only teams on the East Coast should be asked to play in Europe.

West coast should go to Hawaii!

With BETman at the helm we would likely end up in Siberia

Do people in Europe wherever the NHL wants to play even know who the LA Kings are? There are many people in SoCal who don't know who they are.

Better question is, can we arrange to go with them?

You people are looking at this A$$ backwards...the Kings play better on the road....this would more or less add atleast one more "road game" to the season.....sounds like a plus to me.

I like it for selfish reasons since I have never seen an NHL game live, but I don't like it from the Kings point of view.

First of all, not many Europeans follow the West coast teams. The only team with a decent amount of fans is Detroit. Second, there are barely any Europeans on the Kings. It all depends on who they play I guess but I think the novelty of watching an NHL game here is wearing off. They couldn't even sell out the games last season. Ticket prices were outrageous so most casual fans will just stay home and watch it on TV.

I'm a happy camper when I have the chance to watch the Kings live without taking a 12 hours flight from Milan to LA...I'm headed for Stockholm with the whole family, 2 years old son included.

Stockholm? I thought the rumor was Berlin, which made sense to me, because AEG has an arena in Berlin and I was assuming that was the driving force behind the Kings coming to Europe again.

The rumor is a game in Berlin and a game in Stockholm. With a potential 3rd game, likely a preseason one in one of the cities as well.

Damn it, why? I don't want to spend to go to both Berlin and Stockholm...

Last year I was in a small eu town that had its own SEL team but it is largely considered to be a backwater and there were 3 guys with Kings hats and or jerseys on. One of them said "if the king himself says LA is a good hockey place then so do I (loosely translated). So some of our renown comes from back when 99 was on the team but other than that, I see our gear worn all over russia, in a couple of parts of Germany and its even pretty popular in the UK.

I swapped a kings hat from the RC cola days with a kid in Ireland for a national football team cap. The kid was stoked so I asked him why he wanted it and he said that the Kings were from Los Angeles and L.A. is cool so maybe some of it comes from that too.

The funny thing is that it is a white hat with the old purple and gold crown on the front, it didn't say anything about LA.

So were known, and if we aren't going to EU would do a better job of getting us known then staying home would.

I still don't know if the positives outweigh the negatives on going or not but it is an interesting idea. The last time was fun for fans.

The last two Cup winners have both opened the season in Europe.

I heard a pretty legit rumor (someone who works for the Kings) that the Kings are lobbying hard to be the road team for the Winter Classic.

From what I understand, the Kings are going to be the home team for BOTH euro-games for some odd reason. The Kings are hoping that the league will recompense them with participating in the winter classic for having to lose 2 home games instead of just one like it is normally.

A rumor similar to that has been going around for the past few weeks and was also talked about shortly after the gm's last season. I like the idea of our being rewarded for our loyalty to the league by having arguably the largest media market team in the world in the classic. It should be a no brainer but then that is where Gary the brainless wonder makes his living so I will believe it when I see it.

I think there's zero chance the kings take part in the winter classic next year.

When they going to hang that banner? Plenty of rafter space in the Kings section.

If the league is gonna do this, I'd like to see them select teams that would generate the most interest in targeted European markets.

The Kings would probably be a big hit in Slovenia. The Red Wings vs Canucks would be huge in Sweden, and the Capitals anywhere in Russia/Eastern Europe would likely create a buzz.
