Pittsburgh 3rd Rd Pick

Barring any moves on draft day, the Flyers first pick this year will be in the 3rd round and could be anywhere between 70-90th pick (depending on how well the Pens do)

So who do you think the Flyers should pick? Or rather, what type of player exe. D, F or G? Does anyone think that we might be able to get someone worth while in the 3rd Rd this year?

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=886420&page=5

Has a list of names of the prospects in which order people think they will get picked. Anyone see anything worthwhile in there?

Sorry, extremely bored right now. Just wanted to start a new discussion.

Im not to familiar with the upcoming draft class so I cant comment on that, but I will say that I like this brendan ranford kid in our system that plays in the WHL. He has 86 points in 67 games on a pretty bad team. I know some people question his skating but I think he could be a player someday.

This is nothing new, Homer has always built the team through FA and trades. And he's damn good at it too.

Recent Holmgren 1st picks:
2010- Michael Chaput, 3rd round, 89th overall (No longer with organization)
2009- Adam Morrison, 3rd round, 81st overall
2008- Luca Sbisa, 1st round, 18th overall (traded in package for Pronger)
2007- James van Riemsdyk, 1st round 2nd overall

Obviously what the organization needs is a blue chip winger scoring winger, a type of player that's extremely hard to come by in the 3rd round (unless your Ken Holland). Of course you can argue the Flyers have Ranford whose breaking out in a big way right now, but it's still so early to tell with him. Especially if his issues with overall effort and skating are as big as what I've heard

You never know though, Holmgren could opt to pick the best player he thinks is available at that point, or he could go with the typical "project" pick in the 3rd and go by org. needs. Who knows? . The team has a ton of depth in the system because of all those later picks.

Lucky for the Flyers they have such a deep- and decently young team that this isn't a huge issue right now and in the forseeable future.

The big problem is I could see both Gustafsson and Wellwood stepping into the lineup next year to replace FAs and then the only player with a remote chance of making the team within the next few years is Eriksson.

Homer is going to trade it for the rights to Mike Danton.

The only AHLers in our system that I see becoming NHL regulars are Bourdon, Gustaffson, Wellwood, Marshall, Erikkson and Morrison. Maybe Riopel too.

I'd say get a D-man if there is a good one available. Pronger and Timonen are not getting any younger.

ranford is going to be a huge steal I think, hes gone from a plugger in the whl to a top sniper on a terrible team, like I said he has 86 points, next closest on the team has 48

They'll take the best player available, as you should in the 3rd round of the draft.

You never know what will happen with Paul. We could very well trade someone in the off-season if we cannot get a deal with them. Look at Umberger. All I know is that Paul only cares about making the Flyers a better team and not winning championships with our ahl team. He will give up a couple prospects to get a good player already in the nhl.

thats a lot to become regulars. They may very well become regulars, but most likely not with the Flyers.

Honestly, who cares who they take in the 3rd round? Take the best player available.

The odds of a random 3rd round draft pick making any significant contributions at the NHL level are slim-to-nill at best.

If you doubt me, look at what round the majority of the current Flyers roster were picked in, the 1st. 2 of which were drafted #2 Overall (Prongs, JVR) and Hartnell was drafted #6.

1st Round Picks:
Pronger, Richards, Giroux, Carter, Coburn, Meszaros, Briere, Hartnell, JVR, Boucher, Boynton

2nd Round Picks:
Carle, Nodl

3rd Round Picks:
Bartulis

Other: Timonen (10th), Leino (undrafted), Powe (undrafted), Bobrovsky (undrafted), Shelley (undrafted), O'Donnell (6th), Lappy (7th), Versteeg (5th),

Having a poor system is a result of our "going all in" mentality. We are one of the top teams in the NHL, the draft is not a concern.

well, they got a steal in last year's third round pick. Too bad they dealt him for a 6'5 bum who couldn't even crack the roster in Columbus.......

Yep, Sestito has reached his ceiling right now at the age of 23, he won't continue to develop. Yup.

A couple guys that I like that would probably be available at that spot: Dillon Simpson(D, North Dakota, 26GM 2G 7A), Joseph Labate(C, Holy Angels HS, 26GM 29G, 23A), Adam Lowry(LW, Swift Current, 61GM, 17G, 22A), and Joel Edmundson(D, Moose Jaw, 66GM, 2G, 19A)

The appealing thing about Labate is that he's 6'4" and is willing to use his size.

A steal?

Lehtivuori has a shot to be a steal.
Maroon has a shot to be a steal.
Wellwood has a shot to be a steal.
Ranford has a shot to be a steal.

Chaput?

I was never high on him. His ceiling is fairly low, but he has a better shot at becoming at least something as opposed to a number of boom/busts taken around him. That doesn't make him a steal.

I agree with you. Really unless you want to be the worst team in the league for three or four years Homer is doing it best. Do you think for a minute Ed Snider would want the Flyers to be bottom feeders for a extended period of time? Let alone the fan base.

You were never high on him? I guess that seals his fate then. Case closed.

So now that it looks like Bob is at least going to be the guy for the foreseeable future (maybe not a franchise guy, but at least for the next few years depending on how he performs throughout the remainder of his contract) I could see Homer trading a guy like Eriksson come draft day. Not sure what kind of value he really has though. Does anyone have an idea of what prospect goalies command? Higher than the third we already have?

This is barely a possibility but I would like Granlund or Nieto. Also, I think Anze's half brother Gasper would be a good pick

Once again, couldn't even crack the lineup in Columbus. If he couldn't crack arguably one of the weakest forward corps in the NHL, what makes anyone think he's going to crack the lineup here?
