I give up on Bernier

Bernier should never be in net for a shootout ever again. I'm too lazy to look up statistics but if you've been watching the games you know what I'm talking about.

Every single game people on forums debate whether Quick or Bernier should start the next game and exactly how many starts would be too much for Quick this season. We all remember how he looked exhausted against Vancouver in the playoffs last year. Personally, I am in the "start Bernier fully half the time" camp, even though Quick is slightly better.

However, when it comes to the shootout, we have one of the best goalies and one of the worst. It's not going to tire out Quick to stretch and face about three shots once or twice a week.

We don't start Kopitar in net for shootouts and Crosby, Ovechkin and most star players have gone their entire careers without playing goal during a shootout (true fact). Bernier shouldn't be put in that situation either since he looks just as out of place.

My two cents: start Bernier every other game until the end of the season, put in Quick for any shootouts.

No NHL coach would ever put in a cold goalie just because he's good at shootouts unless it came down to the last game of the year where a playoff spot is at stake.

If we go into another shootout with Bernier in (and it isn't a shutout performance 0-0), I would throw in Quick. Quick is 7-0 this season. Bernier is 0-2. Quick is just a more flexible and better goalie in the shootout. Bernier even has said before he needs to improve in that area.

I would rather not risk injuring a cold Quick

You had me at "I'm too lazy..."

And Bernier says: "hey! - I'm just sitting here!"

yeah throw in JQ after he's been sitting idle for 3 hours and isn't loose any longer. your off your rocker. JQ has been great and this is something that JB needs to work on. JB is in a transition phase as he adapts to the NHL game. he finally the past two months has begun to look comfortable and strong during the first 60-minutes. it took half a season to get this far. moving into a shootout is different altogether. seeing players unopposed and 1-on-1 will be another hurdle for JB to master. not to mention the 3 guys (+ more if it extends) will be the top offensive players on a team's roster. you don't master that overnight

Yes, those 2 games Bernier has lost in the shootout this season have been far too much to take. Especially that one against the Wild where he threw a shutout through regulation and OT.

Given that Bernier's last SO appearance was 3 weeks ago, I must ask: did you post this rant via AOL dial-up?

Non-snarky edit: The Kings believe in player development. You don't develop players by giving them 2 tries at something, and benching them when they don't succeed. And no matter what we fans might like to believe, this season is still about development.

AKAY is that you?

Holy over reaction there Batman. Was there a shoot out in the last few hours I missed. Talk about Random.

Step back from the ledge kid. The onyl way you get better at shoot outs is by being in them.

unless the season is on the line i think you have to go with bernier. he has to get the experience if he will eventually become the kings #1 goalie. in florida we had this same issue a few years ago, vokoun was awesome in shootouts, craig anderson was horrible. i was one of the guys who wanted to keep vokoun over andy because of it. but i think andy has gotten much better since then and i kinda regret it. so unless that extra point means playoffs or not id say you just have to ride it out for now until he gets better.

What a mis-directed thread! This should be pointed at Doughty. I mean, he's made some big mistakes in the last few games. Certainly not anything you'd expect from a 21 year old with 3 years of experience.

We should've dumped him before the deadline as his stock will drop further when he makes a mistake in the playoffs.

I give up on Doughty!!!

oh yeah...

We're spoiled with Quick's shootout ability. But we can't stunt Bernier's growth like that and put in a cold goalie. As fun as pulled groins are, I rather we didn't give Quick one by throwing him into a shootout without any decent warmup.

... It took me about 60 seconds to find this info.

Bernier is 1-2 in the shootout in his career. He's allowed 3 goals on 11 shots in the shootout, which is a .727 save percentage.

Those aren't great numbers, but they're not too bad.

For comparison, Michal Neuvirth of Washington is 1-3 in the shootout, and allowed 4 goals on 14 shots, a .714 save percentage.

Both guys will have their highs and lows as their careers mature, and they will only get more familiar with it in time. I'm not convinced that the shootout is much more than a coin flip anyway. It's hardly worth worrying about.

Craig MacTavish did it with the Oilers. It was in either 05-06 or 06-07. Took out Jussi Markkanen after the game and put in Mike Morrison(anybody remember him lol) who was actually pretty good in shootouts that year.
