which is sensible as paying him more than 3 million at this point would be silly, Washington would of course match that offersheet and anything below 4 but offering Alzner 4 million at this point in time is a pretty big risk.

4 million might make them think about it a bit.

It probably would depend on where the picks are coming from. If they're late, they probably keep the player.

If they're top 10 or so, they probably have a harder time.

As an RFA deal that appears to be a good starting point.

Which would still be matched. In order to successfully offer sheet him you're going to have to price him out of range. This doesn't do it.

He's been fantastic all year, zero-point-zero chance he is allowed to leave

Wow, if the Caps dont match a $1M offer sheet, they better let GM GM go

what makes you think Alzner would sign a $1m offer sheet? He's going to be making close to double that next year in all likelihood.

If Alzner actually signs a $1M/year offer sheet, McPhee will say "thanks ******" and match.

This is actually a pretty smart idea.

Do you Caps match 3M per?

A 2nd rounder in compensation is peanuts to give up.

As an Oilers fan, I'd like them to offer a 2yr deal @ 3,013,432 per season. A 2nd rder and slight overpayment is worth prying a guy like that away. If they match, so be it, but they'll have fun the following off-season when Carlson, Green and Fehr are RFA as well as Semin UFA. Just offer sheet Carlson the following year if they match.

This is a bizarre thread. Alzner has been AWESOME this season. The Caps aren't going to pinch pennies on a 22 year old defensmen playing 20 minutes a night who plays a style they desperately need.

I doubt he'll get to July 1 though. I would expect a multi-year (3-4 year) deal at around $2-2.25m per season to get done fairly shortly after the season.

Sure, it will be a bit tight, but they've also got some money coming off the books and some young talent coming in.

They're not going to let their cornerstone players (Carlson/Alzner) walkaway for next to nothing. .

Florida fan?

Should have acquired more 1st rounders and offer sheeted Stamkos and Parise at 9M per for the lulz, Panthers probably could get into the playoffs with just those two on a line.

Yes.

The Caps think he's a future 1st pairing defenseman (arguably he's already one) with a real chance of being a #1 defenseman.

Yeah, except you can't give up your next 4 years of first round picks twice.

No.

But depending on how these playoffs go, I'd imagine they might consider trading a goalie.

I'm guessing this thread was started by someone who looked at his stats and went "Yeah, he'd be cheap". Alzner is probably Washington's best defensive defenceman. He and Carlson have teamed up to become the Caps' best shutdown unit. He rarely makes mistakes, is rarely out of position. For comparision's sakes, Niklas Hjalmarsson was offered a $3.5 million offer sheet last summer. Alzner is, at least, as good defensively, younger, and has better offensive numbers this year. No way he signs an offer sheet for less than Hjalmarsson.

A much more likely outcome is Washington moving Mike Green this summer, with Dennis Wideman stepping in and capably replacing him, the $4.5 million Green makes annually could clear enough cap space for Washington to re-sign Brooks Laich and maybe a low-ball offer to keep Arnott for another year.

I am sure he will.
I was just referring to the OP asking why the Caps would re-sign him for that much or even more.

Faced with a $3m+ offer sheet, they'd let him walk. I'm damn near sure of that. Why? 1)Orlov, he'll be on this team soon and the organization is very high on him and 2)Cap considerations mixed with getting a 1st and 3rd, which they'd certainly like to use to restock their franchise.

Alzner stays a Cap forever and wins 5 Stanley Cup.

Winning. Next question.

Wanna take a poll of Caps fans view on this? Because I'll eat my shoe if more than r5% of Caps fans agree with you. And we're certainly as informed of our cap situation as you are.
