Sharks sign OHL Whaler Livingston

Apparantly the Sharks have signed James Livingston - a forward from the Plymouth Whalers:

He appears to be a 5 year OHLer, which is impressive in a way since it means he started at 16. He was also drafted in the 3rd round by St Louis in 2008. This means he must've been unsigned by them this past summer, like Sam Groulx and Julien Demers for the Sharks.

Scouting report seems to be that he's a big power forward who'll drop the gloves, though they also differ on whether he'll have any offence at the pro level or he'll just be "power grinder".

ok, according to blues fans, the big knock on Livingston is that he's a godawful skater by pro standards.

Well, that's our last new signing until after the season is over then. That should put the Sharks at the 50 NHL contract max.

Does this count against the Sharks 50 signed player limit, or because he's still in the OHL does it not?

No. These are contracts to start in 2011-2012 season, so don't count against the 49 active contracts this season.

It would count as he's not 18 or 19 (see Anderson, Gogol, Sgarbossa who don't count; but Viendesky and Heemskerk do count as they're 20+).

I kinda feel that the Sharks are no where near done for signing undrafted free agents. There's still all the collegians who are 3 weeks or so from their seasons ending. And there still may be 1-2 more CHLers to get signed.

If he ever makes it to the big Sharks, his name would be perfect for those goal posts Nem does.

Sir James Livingston of Whales. Mmmmyes.

I bet he never gets tired of the "Livingston I presume?" comments.

My Dad was born on April fools day, and if you make a joke about it at this point he gives me nasty stare.

I just watched a bunch of fight videos and this guy should not drop the gloves. He has size and willingness, but no ability. He's terrible and ended up on his butt most of the time. Really needs to work on strength and balance. Skating didn't look bad except for foot speed.

Fighting can be taught.

So, just another thing to add to the list.

played with him for a couple of seasons. has all the tools but has had some serious attitude problems and questionable off ice work ethic. as stated earlier, willing to fight but not good at it.

Pshh, teaching players is no big deal.

You know what the Sharks should do? Just sign a bunch of local people off the street. Then all they have to do is teach them to play hockey. That's only one thing to learn rather than someone like Livingston who has several things to learn.

Boom, problem solved.

Well they should try that with GMs - I think Worcester would be better off with this tactic

I watched Livingston play for 3 years in Sault Ste. Marie. He was our 1st round selection, and never lived up to his expectations (that were too high IMO). He is a big kid, very tough to knock off the puck, can throw his weight around, and is very good in the corners. He has a rocket for a shot too, but does not use it enough. His skating is above average for the OHL level, and should be on par with the AHL. His big problem is that he does not put everything together for extended periods, he would start hot for 20 games, then disappear from the score sheet for 10, and he also had a tendency to always go wide around defenders and take bad angle shots. If he can put it all together, he could be an effective 3rd/4th liner, with the ability to pot a goal here and there.
