Alright just shoot me a link where i can find that he was supposed to be a 3rd liner. He had 9 points in 57 games last year

Those are the actual words said by Homer when he announced Shelley's signing.

Just like when he signed Lappy to be a faceoff specialist....

Hopefully he will carry over his play...he's been pretty consistent with his production despite his flu hiatus. Definitely will need him to produce and hopefully Briere breaks out as well as he's usually clutch come playoff time...

I believe the actual quote is something like "he will play on the third and fourth line. He's a type of player we haven't had in a long time"

The thing is, when I search for it I can find the Laperriere thing. Nothing on Shelley

And the callers - my GOD the callers are just shockingly stupid.

I feel foolish for ever having listened even for just those 5 minutes total. I am certain that my overall and hockey i.q. has been significantly diminished.
I didn't listen today, but Macnow is typically even-keel. It's easy for people to freak out after the Flyers choked on Saturday, considering the comments Pronger made after they beat the Oilers. I have been patient, and wanted to see how they responded tonight, but it's understandable if others had a knee-jerk reaction.

Finishing 1st is a good regular season goal, and is not a "wrong objective," but being #1 is overrated, but you can't plan out your matchup before the playoffs, so you might as well try if you can.

3rd and 4th liner isn't quite the same as strictly a 3rd liner. Let alone that the article discusses Shelley mainly as an enforcer.

It discusses him as a replacement for Asham, which he hasn't come close to doing.

Tim P.'s article with some quotes:

http://www.csnphilly.com/03/15/11/Fl...539&feedID=695

Quote:
“We kind of weathered the storm,” Boucher said. “We were unhappy to be down 2-1, but we took the game over in the second.”

Needing a lift, Dan Carcillo opened the second period with a fight against Mike Duco to get the Flyers going. A minute after the fight, Giroux had a hit in the neutral zone which saw the puck go into the Panthers’ end. Carter retrieved it and shot from the high slot off Tomas Vokoun’s glove hand. The puck bounced across the goal line at 4:42 to tie the game.

So often this season, we’ve seen Laviolette use his timeout and then the Flyers come back with a goal on the ensuing shift. He used his timeout with 4:44 left to give his team a breather.

Sure enough, Carter notched his second goal of the period seven seconds later to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead at 15:23.

“Lavy looks like a genius every time,” said Carter, who has four goals in as many games.

The goal was an odd-man rush nicely executed by Briere, who gave Carter a backhanded pass in the crease.

“That was a fluky play on our part,” Briere said. “I saw before the faceoff, their winger and defenseman kind of nodded at each other. I thought they had a special play coming up, better be careful…

“He poked the puck back to the defenseman as he was going in and I looked up and there was no body there. I just tried to get down [ice] as quick as I could.”

Trailing by 2-1, the Flyers seemed lifeless until Carcillo decisioned Mike Duco with 16:14 remaining in the second period.

Just 57 seconds later, Vokoun allowed a soft goal - Carter's shot bounced off the goalie's glove and trickled into the net - enabling the Flyers to tie it at 2-2.

"There's times when to fight, and times when not to fight, and I thought that was a good time." Carcillo said. "I kind of know [Duco] from when we were younger, and I asked him to go, and that was that."

The Flyers were flat before the fight. Carter scored two second-period goals (his 31st and 32d) shortly thereafter.

"It always feels good when you fight and the guys respond like that," Carcillo said.

The Flyers were coming off one of the most embarrassing losses in franchise history, Saturday's 5-4 overtime defeat to Atlanta. It was the first time since 1987 that they had lost after taking at least a three-goal lead into the third period.

I was talking about the fact that having large players doesn't make other teams play soft against you

I don't know if it's been noted, but Matt Carle looked awful last night. Dude was pushed around at all ends of the ice, not to mention that dumbass pinch that led to the goal.

matt "worst player on the team" carle kept the play alive on the first goal.

a win's a win. still not convincing.

also, carle led the team in TOI with 26:42. this doesn't really say anything about his performance but it shows lavi's trust in him with pronger out of the lineup. it's tough to argue against it when you come out with the win.

1. I am Canadian (notice the flag under my avatar)
2. I love the Flyers, I don't know what that has to do with Carle playing bad defense. It is you who are a fan of Carle/Colorado first, Flyers second.

No kidding. He was signed as 4th liner. He probably won't play much in the playoffs, if at all. The Rangers offered him the same money but would only go 1 or 2 years, IIRC from the Ranger commentators, so Homer made it 3 and Jody signed.

Say what you want about Shelley, but Lavy likes putting him in the lineup, over guys like Zherdev, Nodl or Carcillo.

Shelley knows his job, and knows what to do defensively. If he wasn't sluggishly slow it would be easier to accept. I am surprised Lavi has been scratching Nodl, but maybe he is actually banged up, who knows.
Mostly why I hate Carcillo is because he gives zero effort on D, when really 4th liners should be committed to playing good defense before anything else

This team is playing uninspired hockey at this time. Getting points out of last night was pretty darn lucky IMO, time for this team to get their game together.

You're confusing giving zero effort with just not being a great defensive player. If you really paid attention you'd realize that there isn't a lack of effort in any part of Carcillo's game. Nodl is out because he's pretty much irrelevant out there nearly every night.

Carcillo often coasts into the defensive zone, not moving his feet and fails to pick up a man. Carcillo is great on the forecheck, but on the backcheck he isn't

and I'm not a big Nodl fan, but I would still prefer him to Carcillo or Shelley
