Flyers sign St. Cloud State defenseman Oliver Lauridsen

As per the flyers website... never heard of him.. what's the story?

http://flyers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?...id=DL|PHI|home

Quote:
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6-6, 230-pound defenseman Oliver Lauridsen to an entry-level contract that will begin at the start of the 2011-12 season, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

Lauridsen, who turns 22 on March 24, was selected by the Flyers in the seventh round (196th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He recently completed his junior year at St. Cloud State of the WCHA, also the alma mater of Flyers right wing Andreas Nodl.

Nice. I have never seen him play but he is huge. At 6'6'' 220, if he can play well enough to be a 5/6 D-man he will be a nice asset to have. Not sure what the timetable on him is though or if he even pans out to ever make it.

It was posted earlier in the Prospects sticky, too (posts #807-#813).

http://www.sctimes.com/article/20110...s-organization

Quote:
St. Cloud State defenseman Oliver Lauridsen has
signed an entry-level pro hockey contract for the
2011-2012 season with the Philadelphia Flyers
organization.

Lauridsen, who is listed at 6-foot-6 and 230
pounds, completed his junior season with the
Huskies on Saturday. He was a seventh-round pick
(196th selection overall) of the Flyers in the 2009
NHL Entry Draft.

Lauridsen played in 37 games this season and had
one goal, eight assists, 51 penalty minutes and had
a plus/minus rating of plus-6. He was second on
the team in plus/minus to Cam Reid’s plus-7. For
his career, Lauridsen played in 108 games and had
seven goals, 15 assists, 143 penalty minutes and
was a plus-9.

Quote:
For a while Tuesday, it appeared as if the Phantoms would go into Wednesday’s game against Binghamton with six defensemen, including J.P. Testwuide back at his natural position. But sometime after practice broke up at Fire Road Rink, word came that help was on the way in the form of gigantic 6-foot-6, 220-pound defenseman Oliver Lauridsen.

Lauridsen recently finished his junior season at St. Cloud State. Lauridsen, 21, is a native of Gentofte, Denmark. He had one goal and eight assists in 37 games this season. The Flyers drafted him in the seventh round in 2009 and signed him to an entry-level contract on Tuesday. His deal starts next season, but like Harry Zolnierczyk, he’ll finish this season with the Phantoms.

According to Joe Paterson, he’ll be in the lineup Wednesday night, assuming he arrives safely and says he can play. Let’s call it likely, but not certain, that he will play. His status for the weekend trip to Canada is less certain because of paperwork issues.

If Lauridsen doesn’t go, then J.P. Testwuide, who has played most of the season at forward, will return to his natural defensive position. That’s where he practiced Monday.

Hopefully he can play defense well enough. Maybe something for the future or maybe some sort of trade chip-in.

Yesterday Euroflyers posted some quotes at Broad Street Hockey:

Quote:
"It was the most difficult decision of my life."

Oliver would've been joined by his younger brother Markus in college next season.

"First of all, both Markus and I wanted to play together in college, secondly, our team had started to play really well and I thought we could've gone all the way and thirdly, I would've welcomed a small vacation. I don't really get any time off now with a move to the pros right away."

"When I weighed down everything in my mind, I thought it was the right thing and the best thing to do for my development as a hockey player, and that's my biggest goal afterall."
Quote:
Lauridsen says that the contract offer didn't come as a surprise.

"They saw me play every other weekend and I talked with them every week."

"It's great to get a chance with the Flyers. They are perfect for me, because they fit my style of play. I don't feel forced to play differently."

I guess the question is, how well does he use his size (I saw the video), and how high is his defensive ability and hockey IQ?

I kinda wish he was a right-shooter though.

It never hurts to have giants as prospects. I'm eager to see how he does with the Phantoms.

i like this signing. a stay at home defenseman who has turned out to be somewhat of a diamond in the rough. He can skate very well for being 6'6'' too, which will only help his development.

good move.

If he's even a quarter of Pronger, this will be great.

Same school as Nodl, btw

OMG - that hit has me excited! That was a guy 6,4 220 he runs over like it is his 10 year old brother. Wow. If he has wheels, he has the tools to be a very interesting prospect. Very excited to see how he does.

I got a chance to see him in person at the Flyer's latest summer prospect camp. He was among the most noticeably sloppy skaters in the group. Sort of expected for such a big guy though. What I like most about the guy is that his body looks pretty proportional. For such a hulking guy he's not a lanky string bean like Coburn was.

Just curious as far as entry level deals go. Say his deal is for $800k (totally just made that number up). Is he getting that full $800k a year or is that only if he is in the NHL?

Nice signing. I was kind of hoping we'd keep him. You can't teach size, but you can teach someone how to use it.

I like it.

I've heard good things about this kid before. Hopefully he can use his size well and be a solid addition in a few years.

really? from what i've seen, he's actually a pretty good skater for how big he is. definately better than most players that are 6'6'' 220.

Big, nasty, I like him.

If they could track down whomever Umberger worked with his last offseason with the flyers, that's who I'd send anyone with skating and quickness problems to. It was like he was a completely different player that year.

Umberger never had speed isues, he just always fell down, but then that one year he was a beast with the puck in the corners

As far as I know, entry level contracts salaries of 800k (or 600k or 900k) refer only to their NHL salary. I believe most players get 10% or less while playing in juniors or AHL.

That's probably why the Flyers are able to lure these guys out of college. A 70k a year paycheck to go pro is enticing, especially with the cost of college in the US and the down economy. Even if they fail to ever make the NHL, they can afford to go back to school.

Yes, I am pretty sure of this because I got to see him in about a half hour of strictly skating drills with other Flyers prospects. He was among the slowest and sloppiest. Yes, hes a big guy, and can get some slack for that, but he was also doing drills amongst a bunch of tryout scrubs.
