Let's get this straight. Any GM that offers Laich 5 million a year is an imbecile.

His stats are down a bit this year(whole team is in fact) but has seasons of 53 and 59 points so he will be the 2nd or 3rd best UFA forward after Richards and possibly Jokinen.
5.5 for a 55 point center, Oilers already have one of those, don't want another and I can't imagine any team is that desperate or foolish, good player but not worth 5.5 IMO.

3-3.5 to stay in DC. Depends...he WAS having a bad contract season, but he's warmed up lately with the team.

I think Laich is one of the most underrated players in the game, he definitely deserves a raise.

He's versatile enough to play both when needed. Playing center (quite well actually) right now, but overall probably better thought of as a regular winger.

He was going to resign for the league minimum, but he started thinking about his tire changing business on the side, so he'll get in the 3.5 range from DC.

He's even spent some shifts at D last year if memory serves.

Some imebcile signed Gonchar for 5.5 mil x 3 years at 36 or 37.

Another imbecile signed Redden at 6.5 mil per year for 6 years, same one signed Boogard for 1.6 a year over 3 years.

I think a guy like Laich in his prime who is the #2 forward UFA will get somebody offer him 5 mil per year and maybe a team with cap room and desperate to improve will go to 5.5 mil as it's a weak forward UFA market(after Richards Jokinen Laich and Upshall it's pretty thin).

Weak UFA market + desperate teams = bad contracts.

IMO he's worth 3.75mil.

In a weak year of UFA's he'll receive 4 - 4.5mil.

Ryan Malone was a 29 year old power forward who turned a 27g + 24a season (and 6g + 10a post-season) into $4.5 million for six years.

Laich's at 16g+ 24a so far for this year that "stinks", he's younger and has much better career numbers than Malone, in similar roles. If he has a good (or great) playoff, he is going to make or break his value on the open market.

If it's up to Laich, I'd agree with you there is little chance he leaves DC. But if his agent convinces him to wait to July 1 to test the market, it'll be interesting to see if he balks at a potentially much higher salary from somewhere else compared to what the Caps offer.

My gut is that he probably would, but you never know until the offers hit the table. Malone was from Pittsburgh and went to the Cup finals, yet he still went for the almighty buck. It is a business, and you never know if he gets to July 1.

Burke will be after him im sure.

We're short on LW talent, so he fits perfectly on our team. If hes a good PKer thats great s well.

Laich is a very good player and very useful but to pay a guy the way he's likely going to get paid to likely play third line minutes seems like something I'd avoid. He's good enough to play on the second line but in all honesty, would you want him as your second line center? He's just one of those guys that's in between the second and third line.

Don't believe I've ever seen a UFA that wasn't rumored to be Burke's crosshairs, according to HF of course, and I mean every single UFA there is.

Laich's primarily a LWer not a centre. On most good teams in the leagues he'd be in the top 6, he's not a 2nd/3rd line tweener like Armstrong, Miettenen and Upshall.

That's not a criticism of Burke. That's a criticism of some of the leafs fans on this board who want this player or that and claim everyone will take a pay cut to play there. Emphasis on the word some.

Find me one example of anyone saying a UFA not currently playing for TO will take a pay cut to play here. In fact its almost the opposite, that Burke will overpay for a certain player
