1999-2004:
1999 -- October 15 -- Jody Hull was dealt to Philadelphia in a cash transaction. Hull was selected by Atlanta from the Flyers in the expansion draft but did not make the Thrashers' roster and was assigned to Orlando.
1999 -- December 23 -- The teams played to a 4-4 tie in Philadelphia, the first matchup between the franchises. Mikael Andersson scored the first goal in this series 1:54 into the game and then Mikael Renberg scored at the 3:40 mark to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead. The Thrashers then removed Norm Maracle for Scott Fankhouser who finished the game by making 36 saves on 38 shots. Philly outshot Atlanta 42-29 including 5-0 in overtime. Nelson Emerson scored the only goal in the third period. Kelly Buchberger had a game-high three points.
2000 -- January 14 -- The teams met in Philips Arena for the first time and Norm Maracle backed Atlanta to a 1-0 victory. The game's lone goal came in the third period by Dean Sylvester. Eric Lindros was elbowed in the head and suffered a Grade 2 concussion, his third concussion, which sidelined him the next four games. The Thrashers sold standing-room seats for the first time and had a paid crowd of 18,571.
2000 -- April 4 -- Brian Boucher made 22 saves and the Flyers never trailed after Valeri Zelepukin (1-1-2) scored 1:50 into the game en route to a 5-3 win at Atlanta. Andy Delmore (1-1-2) and Craig Berube (1-1-2) also had a goal and an assist and Daymond Langkow had two assists. Simon Gagne's breakaway goal with 1:35 to play sealed the win.
2000 -- April 6 -- JVB made 20 stops in Philly's 3-1 home win. Daymond Langkow scored the GWG midway through the second period. Atlanta was held to two shots in the first period and nine through 40 minutes. Mark Recchi, who picked up his 61st and 62nd assists of the season (he led the League that season with 63), was awarded the Bobby Clarke Trophy representative of team MVP prior to the game.
2000 -- November 17 -- Dan McGillis fired a shot just inside the blueline and the Flyers recorded a 3-2 win in Atlanta. McGillis' goal came with 61 seconds to play in OT. McGillis said "He (Roman Cechmanek) told us we could beat him (Milan Hnilicka) with the long shot. He gave me his weaknesses." Cechmanek made 25 saves and Mark Recchi (1-2-3) factored in each goal. Recchi's goal was a short-handed breakaway. Donald Audette tied the score with 1:00 left in regulation. 2001 -- January 5 -- The Flyers skated to a 3-0 lead at the 2:19 mark, which led to an Atlanta goalie switch from Damian Rhodes (0 saves, 3 shots) to Milan Hnilicka (18 saves, 20 shots), and held on for a 6-4 win at Atlanta. The lead increased to 5-0 in the second period and was 5-1 through two periods. The Thrashers got within 5-4 with 6:51 left in the third period. Mark Recchi (1-3-4), Ruslan Fedotenko (1-2-3) and Keith Primeau (2-0-2) led the offense and Roman Cechmanek made 25 saves for the Flyers. Donald Audette (1-2-3) and Ray Ferraro (0-3-3) led Atlanta. 2001 -- January 6 -- Keith Primeau scored his 200th N.H.L. goal with 7:36 left in the third period to give the Flyers a 2-2 tie in Philly. Steve Staois and Denny Lambert gave the Thrashers a 2-0 lead. Simon Gagne got the Flyers on the board with 8:19 left in the second period. Damian Rhodes made 35 saves for Atlanta. The Thrashers were outshot 39-20 including 19-7 through two periods (yet lead 2-1) and 37-16 in regulation.
2001 -- February 17 -- Roman Cechmanek made 28 saves and the Flyers had four third period goals in a 5-1 home win. Simon Gagne (2-1-3), Chris Therien (1-1-2), Mark Recchi (1-1-2) and Rick Tocchet (0-2-2) led the offense. The game was scoreless until Gagne scored with under six to play in the second period. The Flyers killed eight of nine Atlanta PPs.
2001 -- October 16 -- John LeClair scored with 3:15 left in regulation in a 3-3 tie at Atlanta. LeClair also scored the Flyers' second goal. Damian Rhodes made 34 saves for the Thrashers while Roman Cechmanek made 28 saves for Philly. Atlanta had three one-goal leads. The game was scoreless until the final two minutes of the second period.
2001 -- December 10 -- Jeremy Roenick scored a PPG with 10 minutes left in the third period and Keith Primeau added an insurance goal in Philly's 3-1 win at Atlanta. The Flyers outshot Atlanta 29-15. Roman Cechmanek picked up the win. Eric Desjardins suffered a broken thumb and did not return until January 8 against the Thrashers.
2002 -- January 8 -- Jiri Dopita (4-1-5) tied a team-record with four goals in Philadelphia's 7-4 home win. Dopita, whose last three goals formed a natural hat trick, had just four shots in the game. Justin Williams (1-2-3), John LeClair (1-2-3) and Eric Weinrich (0-2-2, +5) also contributed to the win. Milan Hnilicka gave up four goals before being replaced by Damian Rhodes (both goalies gave up two goals to Dopita). Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice.
2002 -- January 17 -- The Flyers out-scored Atlanta 4-0 in the third period en route to a 6-3 victory in Philly. Justin Williams and John LeClair scored within 32 second in the first 2:02 of the third period which gave Philly a 4-3 lead. Mark Recchi, Williams and LeClair each had a goal and an assist. Atlanta led 2-0 with goals 66 seconds apart and held a 3-2 after two periods. Philly held a 27-22 shots advantage including 23-11 over the last two periods. Roman Cechmanek made 19 saves.
2002 -- December 18 -- Robert Esche stopped 23 of 24 shots including a brilliant 15-for-15 in the third period and the Flyers scored in each period of a 3-1 win in Atlanta. In the first period, the Flyers held a 13-3 shot advantage yet the score was tied 1-1. Justin Williams (1-1-2) had two points. Mark Recchi scored the GWG in the second period. Donald Brashear added the insurance tally in the third. Brashear said of his goal "I just saw an opportunity to go around the defenseman, the puck got through him and I just dove. Anytime I make a move like that it surprises me. I always know what I want to do ... I just don't always succeed.'' In the last period, Atlanta held a 15-2 shot advantage but the Flyers got the only goal. Eric Desjardins became the 185th NHL player to appear in 1,000 regular season games.
2003 -- January 5 -- Mark Recchi (2-0-2) scored with 5:31 to play and the Flyers extended their unbeaten streak against Atlanta to 12 games (10-0-2) with a 5-4 road win. Recchi's goal 11:11 into the third period gave the Flyers a 4-3 lead. Dennis Seidenberg (1-2-3) and Radovan Somik scored 18 seconds apart late in the second period, with Michael Handzus (0-2-2) assisting on both, to give Philly a 3-2 lead. Philly outshot the Thrashers 40-22.
2003 -- January 13 -- Dany Heatley registered his first NHL hat trick, Marc Savard added (1-2-3) three points and Atlanta snapped the Flyers 6-game win streak with a 7-4 victory in Philadelphia. The Thrashers also ended a 12-game winless skid (0-10-2) in this series. Four goalies surrendered goals. Atlanta goaltender Byron Dafoe left the game with a groin injury with 2:55 left in the second period after stopping 24 of 27 shots and Pasi Nurminen gave up one goal on 15 shots; the duo stopped 20 of 21 shots in the second period. Philadelphia goaltender Robert Esche was replaced by Roman Cechmanek with 5:33 left in the period after allowing three goals on five shots.
2003 -- March 24 -- Michal Handzus had two goals, including the GWG with 24 seconds left in the second period, in Philly's 6-2 home win. Tony Amonte (1-1-2), Handzus and Kim Johnsson scored in a span of 1:36 to give Philly a 6-2 lead early in the third period. Donald Brashear (0-2-2) was named the game's third star as he assisted on the tying and insurance goals. Robert Esche made 16 saves. The Flyers doubled Atlanta 36-18 in shots. Milan Hnilicka stopped 30 shots for Atlanta.
2003 -- November 15 -- Jeff Hackett recorded the 26th shutout of his career by making 24 stops and Sami Kapanen (1-1-2) snapped a scoreless tie 1:14 into the third period to lead the Flyers to a 4-0 win in Philadelphia. The Flyers scored four third period goals off Byron Dafoe.
2003 -- December 21 -- Ronald Petrovicky scored twice and Byron Dafoe made 25 saves to help the Thrashers win 4-1 in Atlanta. Jim Vandermeer, on his fifth callup from the AHL that season, was a -4 and demoted after the next game.
2004 -- February 5 -- Antero Niittymaki had 20 saves in the second start of his NHL career in the Flyers' 5-1 win in Atlanta. The Flyers scored four times in the second period including goals by Mark Recchi (1-1-2) and Sami Kapanen 32 seconds apart. 2004 -- February 21 -- Simon Gagne beat Pasi Nurminen on a penalty shot with 1:01 left in the third period to snap a tie and the Flyers won 5-4 in Philadelphia. With the game even 4-4, Gagne was awarded a penalty shot after Andy Sutton shot a loose stick on the ice toward him. Alexei Zhamnov, playing his first game with the Flyers, waited for the officials to review the play thinking he could take the shot; however, Gagne was required to take it because the loose stick came at him. The Flyers went 4-for-5 on the PP. Among the leaders for the Flyers; Sean Burke with 32 saves and Joni Pitkanen (2-1-3) with three points. Ronald Petrovicky was given a five-minute major midway through the first period for charging Mattias Timander into the boards and the Flyers scored three times in the advantage. It was the third time in team history the Flyers scored three goals on the same five-minute power play. The three goals, including two by Pitkanen (he assisted on the other), came in a span of 2:42. Atlanta tied the game with three goals in the second period and then after Philly made it 4-3, the Thrashers tied the score at 4-4. Leaders for Atlanta: Ilya Kovalchuk (1-2-3) and Marc Savard (0-3-3). Kovalchuk received a gross misconduct penalty after the game for cursing the officials. The Flyers were without six regulars including Keith Primeau, Jeremy Roenick and Eric Desjardins. After the game, Sutton said of the ref's decision to award a penalty shot "It was the right call. It's unfortunate it cost us the game." Atlanta head coach Bob Hartley told Flyers' head coach Ken Hitchcock "Keep this one wrapped in Christmas paper. Wrap it in Christmas paper!" to which Hitchcock replied "I'll send you a card, I'll send you a kiss (Hershey, AHL reference)."
2005-2009:
2005 -- November 5 -- Simon Gagne had his second career hat trick and an assist in a 4-3 home win. The Flyers' reached the 25,000,000 mark for home attendance. Gagne (3-1-4), Peter Forsberg (1-2-3) and Mike Knuble (0-2-2) totalled nine points in the game. Forsberg had 12 points in his last four games. Robert Esche made 28 saves. Philly had four goals on 18 shots against Mike Dunham. The Thrashers' Steve Shields suffered a knee injury during warmups and his NHL playing career would be over by the end of the month after a recurrence.
2005 -- November 18 -- Greg de Vries scored on a breakaway 3:05 into OT lifting Atlanta to a 6-5 win at Philadelphia. The Thrashers scored two PPGs in the final 1:50 of regulation on goals by Peter Bondra and Patrick Stefan, the former coming on a 6-on-3 man advantage and the latter coming with seven seconds to play. Prior to the tying goal, a possible penalty was not called as Simon Gagne attempted to score into the empty net. Afterwards, Gagne said "I had a great chance to score a goal and maybe put the game away. I had a couple of sticks in my skate, and I'm pretty sure I got held." Ilya Kovalchuk (2-3-5) scored two PPGs in the first period with Donald Brashear in the box both times. Kovalchuk took nine shots, six in the opening period. Atlanta led 3-1 after the opening period and held a 17-8 shots advantage. The Flyers out-scored the Thrashers 4-0 in the second period and held a 16-7 shots advanatge. Gagne had 10 shots including seven in the second period. Kovalchuk was issued a double minor with just under eight minutes left but the Flyers failed to score. Earlier in the third period, R.J. Umberger was stopped on a penalty shot. Atlanta went 4-for-10 on the PP, while the Flyers were 2-for-6. Michael Garnett made 31 saves for the win. Robert Esche made 30 saves in the loss and said later "There are so many screw-ups out there. I don't know what is going on. No clue. The only way to truly kill a penalty is not to get in the box. We keep shooting ourselves in the foot." Branko Radivojevic (2-1-3) scored twice but was in the box for Atlanta's fourth goal. Derian Hatcher was also assessed a hooking minor late in regulation which led to the tying goal but he said later "By no means did I hook him. My stick was on the ice. He lost the puck. He stopped."
2005 -- December 28 -- Sami Kapanen (1-1-2) scored off a feed from Michal Handzus (0-2-2) just 13 seconds into OT to give the Flyers a 4-3 win in Atlanta. Thrashers' goalie Michael Garnett, who entered the game with consecutive shutouts, said afterwards "(It was) just an amazing play that I don't think anyone could have stopped." Simon Gagne ended the streak less than three minutes into the game. Antero Niittymaki made 28 saves for the win.
2006 -- March 18 -- Antero Niittymaki made 25 saves, the Flyers killed eight of nine Atlanta power-play opportunities and Joni Pitkanen had three assists in Philly's 4-2 win in Atlanta. The Flyers never trailed in the game, Jeff Carter scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and Niko Dimitrakos added an insurance goal in the third period. Atlanta center Serge Aubin needed help leaving the ice after suffering a sprained right knee midway through the opening period and he did not return.
2006 -- October 26 -- John Stevens earned his first win as an NHL head coach in Philly's 3-2 shootout win at home. The Flyers won the shootout 2-1 with goals by Simon Gagne and Peter Forsberg. Antero Niittymaki made 28 saves and stopped two of the three SO attempts including the last two tries by Marian Hossa and Ilya Kovalchuk. The Thrashers switched to goalie Kari Lehtonen for the shootout after Johan Hedberg made 29 stops through 65 minutes. Forsberg also scored in regulation. Bobby Holik tied the game 2-2 with a third period goal.
2007 -- January 28 -- Jeff Carter scored twice, including the GWG with 1:02 remaining, and Antero Niittymaki's personal 15-game winless streak (0-13-2) ended as he stopped 37 shots in Philly's 2-1 win at Atlanta. Peter Forsberg said "We sat back and let Niittymaki win it for us." The Flyers went 1-for-2 on the PP. Atlanta failed on all 6 PPs including a 5-on-3 for nearly two minutes. 2007 -- February 3 -- Antero Niittymaki made 32 saves on 33 shots in Philly's 5-2 road win. The Flyers scored four third period goals including the eventual game-winner by Mike York after a lengthy review determined his stick was not above the crossbar. Jeff Carter's insurance tally came via a short-handed breakaway. Robert Esche left before the seven minute mark due to a neck injury and was replaced by Niittymaki who improved to 6-0 against the Thrashers. Atlanta held a 38-24 shots advantage.
2007 -- February 24 -- Braydon Coburn was acquired from Atlanta for Alexei Zhitnik. Flyers' GM Paul Holmgren said of Coburn "He's got tremendous size; he skates well and moves the puck well. He won't be a high point scorer, but one of those middle-of-the-road guys. For a big man, he really moves well. He's a guy we liked a long time who never found his niche in Atlanta, which has an older group of defensemen." Zhitnik said of the Flyers "I liked being here, and I appreciated that the organization was very good to me."
2007 -- March 15 -- Stefan Ruzicka (1-2-3) had three points and Martin Biron made 37 saves in Philly's 3-2 home win. Derian Hatcher ended a scoreless drought of 125 games and gave Philly a 1-0 lead. 2007 -- October 16 -- Martin Biron stopped 31 shots, some extraordinary, and recorded his 19th NHL shutout in a 4-0 victory at Philly. Mike Richards, who was a +4, scored the GWG in the first period. 2008 -- January 8 -- Jeff Carter scored twice in 13 seconds, the second-fastest two goals by a player in franchise history (Ron Flockhart scored a pair of goals in eight seconds against St. Louis December 6, 1981), and Philly claimed a 4-1 victory at Atlanta. Scott Hartnell added three points in the four-goal flurry including a SHG at 19:59+. Antero Niittymaki made 27 saves snd improved to 7-0-0 against Atlanta. 2008 -- February 5 -- Steve Downie scored with 4:39 to play in Philly's 3-2 road win. Antero Niittymaki had 23 saves and upped his career record to 8-0 with 13 GA in this series. 2008 -- March 18 -- Antero Niittymaki's sparkling save off Ilya Kovalchuk's shot in the final seconds proved to be one of the most important moments in the season as the Flyers, winless in their last four, beat Atlanta 3-2 and finished the season with a 7-1-1 streak to lift them into the playoffs. Jeff Carter scored the go-ahead goal on the PP with three seconds remaining in the second period. Up by two in the last minute of play, the Flyers' lead was cut to 3-2 when Kovalchuk scored his 50th at 19:30. Then, with about three seconds to play, his bullet nearly tied the game but Niittymaki made a terrific save which floored the Atlanta forward in disbelief. 2008 -- November 16 -- Antero Niittymaki stopped 29 shots, Simon Gagne (1-2-3) had three points and Joffrey Lupul scored the go-ahead goal with 6:17 to play in regulation as the Flyers ended the Thrashers' five-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory. Niittymaki improved to 11-0 in his career against Atlanta. The Thrashers outshot Philly 21-4 in the final period and Niittymaki made 19 stops. 2009 -- January 21 -- Antero Niittymaki made 28 saves and set a franchise record for consecutive wins against one opponent (12-0 record) while Mike Knuble scored twice in the Flyers' 5-3 victory. The Flyers led 3-0 after two periods but the Thrashers tied the scored midway in the third period. Knuble's GWG came with 7:48 to play. Over the last 20 years, Niittymaki (against the Thrashers) and Chris Osgood (17-0-0 against Tampa Bay) are the only goalies to have won their first 12 decisions against one team.
2009 -- February 8 -- Antero Niittymaki made 29 saves and Jeff Carter (2-1-3) scored twice in Philly's 14th straight win over the Thrashers 3-2 at Atlanta. Niittymaki improved his career mark against the Thrashers to 13-0. He ended the season as one of only two active goalies with a perfect record in 10+ decisions against one team (Chris Osgood was 17-0 against Tampa Bay). 2010 -- January 28 -- Atlanta out-scored the Flyers 3-0 in the third period of a 4-3 win in Philly. Johan Hedberg made 34 saves and Jim Slater scored twice including the GWG with 6:32 to play. Slater also scored the first goal of the game in the opening period. Philly responded with three goals in the second period to pull ahead 3-1 including two points by Claude Giroux (1-1-2). Ray Emery made 24 saves. The Flyers were 22-0 when leading after two periods.
2010 -- March 20 -- Colby Armstrong scored twice and Johan Hedberg made 25 saves in Atlanta's 5-2 home win. Niclas Bergfors and Nik Antropov both had a goal and an assist. The Thrashers led 2-0 at the 5:42 mark and 3-2 after two periods. 2011 -- January 14 -- Sergei Bobrovsky made 27 saves and Danny Briere scored the GWG with 7:12 to play in Philly's 5-2 win at Atlanta. Jody Shelley's blast tied the game 36 seconds after Atlanta snapped a scoreless tie 16:37 into the second period. Kimmo Timonen (+3) scored his first goal since October 30, 2010 21 seconds later to give Philly a 2-1 lead. Rich Peverley's PPG tied the game with three seconds to play in the second period. The four goals came in a span of 3:20. Niclas Bergfors assisted on both Thrashers' goals. 2011 -- March 12 -- The Flyers dropped a 5-4 OT decision at home despite taking a 3-0 lead into the third period. It was the first time the Flyers lost a game leading by three or more goals entering the third period since November 21, 1987 (led 4-1, lost 6-4 to the NYI). Ron Hainsey (1-1-2) scored 1:17 into OT for the GWG. Andrew Ladd (1-1-2) tied the game with 45 seconds to play. Ville Leino (3-0-3) had his first NHL hat trick and his third goal gave Philly a 4-2 lead with 6:28 left in regulation. Mike Richards (0-3-3) also had three points. Sergei Bobrovsky made 36 saves. Ondrej Pavelec (9 saves, 12 shots) was replaced by Chris Mason (11 saves, 12 shots) at the start of the third period. Atlanta outshot Philly 41-24 including 21-12 through two periods (Flyers led 3-0) and 20-12 combined in the third period and OT. With the preposterous defeat in 1987 (listed above) to the Islanders, the Flyers' record was horrible to start the season: 6 wins in the first 22 games (or near that). Ron Hextall said to some assembled types that the Flyers will be in first place by Christmas. The last game prior to Christmas, the team finished an 11-0-2 run and...got into first place.

I barely remember watching Hextall's playing days, but I do remember that he was the man.

My namesake says, "Uhh, no." Hextall carried the Flyers on his shoulders often, including to game 7 of the finals against the mighty Oilers in '87 and became one of only five players to win the Conn Smythe in a losing cause, and also won the Vezina that year. But the bad Hextall was really bad, and he was just bat-guano insane.
I'll still take 2-Cup Bernie as the all-time best, then Hextall, and Pelle (RIP) third.
Huge opportunity for Gustafsson. Hopefully in Pronger's absence he can prove he will challenge for a roster spot next season. Hopefully we won't need Laviolette to contemplate throwing Boynton back in.
