Oilers interested in Whitney?

The oilers need to address there three key components obviously a scoring centre and a offensive defenceman but k-lo has also said they are thin on the left wing, this being said one of the edmonton papers suggested ray whitney... when asked whitney about this, he said he wouldn't mind and also he said it would be easier since he just built a house in fort saskatewan, which is like 15 mins outside the city... so who knows ray whintey could become a member of the oilers... and if this happens would it appeal to more free agents to come to edmonton

I can definatly see that happening, and I thought it would be an excellent signing as well. He's would be an good fit in Edmonton.

whitney is in the second tier of available ufa this year. Most oiler fans have their hearts set on neidermeyer, foote, or demitra but I am not sure if that is the best route. The New England Patriots proved the best "team" wins and it is hard to build a salary cap team with one guy eating 20% of the payroll.

A combination of Whitney, Allison, and Accoin is affordable for the oilers and would make us a legit stanley cup contender. The real bonus about Whitney is that he is a pp specialist and the oilers need that. We were 6th overall in even strength scoring last year but 29th on the powerplay.

If Brian Burke doesn't bring a guy like Ray Whitney in, then I hope Edmonton could reel him in. Hopefully they could also bring in a guy like Allison and a defenseman like Rafalski.

How are the Edmonton Oilers weak on the left wing? Are you nuts?

Ryan Smyth (20 goal scorer )
Mike York ( 20 goal scorer )
Raffi Torres ( Already a 20 goal scorer )
Ethan Moreau ( Scored 20 goals last season )
Brad Isbister ( i give up )
Jani Rita ( Last Chance )

Smyth, Torres and Moreau are natural LW's. The rest are versatile and can play on the other win or center. Signing a LW from an Edmonton Oiler POV would be pointless.

IMO, here are the holes they need to address

Smyth [ Insert First Line Center ] [ Insert First Line RW'er ]
Torres York Hemsky
Moreau Reasoner Dvorak
Isbister Horcoff Laraque

Brewer [ Insert Decent Top Pairing DMAN ]
Smith Semenov
Staois Woywitka

[ Insert Starting Netminder ]
Ty Conklin

After all these holes addressed i would gladly call Edmonton a cup contender. Until then, additions like Whitney and any other second tier UFA would not change my perceptions of this team. ( I think they are an 11th - 9th place team this year )

Kevin Lowe has a record of low-balling, and hesistant to make moves. I don't believe Lowe is the GM to lead this team to past glory.

IMO I don't think that the Oilers will acquire the 7.8 Million dollar centerman or that much needed puck-moving dman. I see Lowe going after guys like Allison, Zhamnov, Gratton, Lindros who are high risk UFA's rather than safe players like Zubov, Gonchar, Forsberg and player like that.

??

If the Oilers are thin on anything it certainly isn't on the left side, and to be honest, I have yet to hear anybody from Oilers management come out and state this.

I'd be happy with Whitney... I tihnk he brings a lot for what he would likely sign for.

Whitney would be a great signing by the Oilers. However, I'd still expect Lowe to go out and acquire a top line centreman...
