Even if the Habs claimed him, he couldn't play for the rest of the season.

here's a question...

if the habs (or any other team) claimed him on re-entry, they are on the hook for 1.5M$ for next season, BUT...

what happens if Montreal then decided to buy him out in the off-season?
do they buy him out @ 1.5M$, or are they then responsible for the whole 3M?

Personally, I think they should buy him out regardless of how he plays from here on, like even a miraculous PPG pace with GW playoff goals, just based on the fact that I know Kotalik can be a tease when he wants to.
Thanks for the response. I honestly think he has a better shot of finding a permanant NHL spot next season if he does get bought out. I don't think the Flames are willing to have him take up 3M in cap space all year, and he sure wont find anyone willing to trade for him at that price.

But if he gets bought out, he would surely get offers for a mill or less. While still getting paid by Calgary, he would make a decent wage, and have an NHL job.

interestingly enough Kotalik had a goal and an assist in his return, his first multi-point game as a member of the Flames

i think this year was just a case of really bad luck... He is a streaky player and perhaps moody, but he wasn't as bad as his lack of production earlier in the year indicated.

He had a great pre-season, then hurt his shoulder, probably rushed the return a little bit, and came back to a team in the middle of a bad downward spiral.

he never found his game again (though at that point no one on the flames was playing well), and ended up getting demoted.

While he needs to be more consistent than he's been in recent seasons to warrant a 3M$ cap hit, I don't think it's too far fetched to think that he'll be a solid contributor next year for whomever he ends up playing for (be it the flames, or someone else after getting bought out).

i was in favor of the habs claiming him earlier in the year on re-call waivers, and if they buy him out, I'd take him with the habs @ ~2M$.

He could play for the rest of the regular season, but not the playoffs.

With all the injuries, that would have been fine to me.
