Jeanneret's future

Does the rebirth of this team and the Pegula era give Jeanerette enough reason to tag along on a year by year basis?

Discuss.

Personally, I know that RJ is probably going to retire, but you have to imagine, that Pegula, understanding how important all the components of this community are to the fans, has something up his sleeve as far as convincing RJ to stay on for another year at least. I hope to god RJ comes back.

I know that retirement decisions are made with more than just emotions in mind.

There's family, health, friends, etc.

But I hope to god that RJ comes back.

I don't know the guy or what makes him tick, but it seems as if he truly wanted or wants to be around if and when this team wins a cup. That said, the recent rejuvenation in the organization may energized him a bit more and may have bought us a few more years with him in the booth.

One can only hope he wants to stay around.

Unfortunately, it's been rough watching him age, and you can tell that he doesn't have that much left in him.

If Pegula is really on a 3-year plan, there's a chance RJ decided to stick around for that.

Jeanerette should stay forever. If he can't physically be in the booth to call the games, reconstruct whatever body parts you need to in order to keep him commentating. He can call games Darth Vader style.

I think Pegula has the resources to make RJ an offer he can't refuse.

I don't have any idea how much RJ makes, but I'm willing to beg Pegula would back up a dumptruck full of $$$ to have RJ stay on for as long he can.

Exactly - I have a feeling that Pegula looks at Jeanneret the same way as he does Ruff and, if asked, he'd use the "he ain't going anywhere" response.

And like Ruff, I'm sure RJ shares the same burning desire to be associated with a Cup win in Buffalo. Barring health issues, I think RJ will keep doing it with the comfort of a year-to-year commitment and having some of the road trip accomodations taken care of with other announcers.

Quote:
SUGGESTION:

Replay Rick Jeanneret’s calls over the PA when showing goal replays on the video board.

This was a popular suggestion, and as you may have noticed, we began doing this during last Sunday’s 6-4 win over Ottawa. One of the best parts of being a Sabres fan is the privilege of listening to RJ’s iconic goal calls, and we’re excited to bring that experience inside the Arena.
http://sabres.nhl.com/index.html

It wasn't Black's quote but the implementation of the fan suggestion to replay RJ calls in the arena has to represent an acknowledgement by Pegula and Black of how revered and loved RJ is with the fans.

Two or three years ago, I would agree that RJ sounded like he was losing some of his spark as well as his mental acuity - but Harry Neale's aging in the last three years has been even more obvious and difficult to watch/listen to. In some strange way, I think RJ picked up his stride to compensate for all of the gaps and mistakes Neale would say on air. How often have we all heard Neale utter the wrong player's name, the wrong score or misrepresent historical facts, only to have RJ jump in and correct him? Too often in recent years....

I'd love to see what kind of infusion of energy RJ might get if paired with a younger color commentator with a fresh and insightful take on the action - someone like former Sabres Peca, Barnaby, Galley or Simpson.

I think if he did the home games while someone else did the road games he would probably find that favorable. He still loves calling games just hates all the travel at his age.

I'd be curious if Pegula ever entertains the idea of a private charter plane for flying the team - certainly, with his resources and company, I have to believe he owns a plane(s). Other sports teams have been known to use a team plane rather commercial flight to ease on the hassles of air travel and give the players more comfortable accommodations after games. It would kind of fit in with what Pegula and Black inferred with the "hockey heaven" goal and references to player facilities.

If the team had their own plane, I wonder if RJ would find the travel less stressful...

If the Sabres really were to win a cup in the next 3-5 years and RJ wasn't around, it would be a real shame.

I dont think it would ever happen. Also dont think he would still be doing it now if they didn't get Neale here. He wanted to retire with his long time friend.

With Pegula coming in maybe he'll last another year or two. I'm even fine with Rick just doing the home games if it mean he'd be around a little while longer.

No disrespect to RJ, but when that time comes I hope they don't replace him with his son.

Those two games he did at Edmonton and Calgary were just awful.

I'd rather have Kevin Sylvester do play by play than RJ's son.

My grandfather was saying he said the same about Rick in his early years.. he was extremely squeaky apparently. So, all lil Rick has to do is smoke often and drink more often to build up those pipes!

Take tons and tons of RJ clips, edit them together and put them on a sound board. Then have someone controlling the board throughout the game. As new players join the lineup, RJ can record new goal clips with witty name-play.

Kind of like how the NHL video games do the play by play, except in real time!
