And Luongo is paid a bucket of millions on the league leading team in points and are looking to be legit cup contenders. What happens if Vancouver win the Cup? Will you claim you can win with an expensive elite goalie all of a sudden? Or will you refute it as an anomaly?
And Detroit haven't won the cup in the two most recent years, despite having an average goalie? Should they get an even worse goalie? Perhaps he isn't average enough?
Your fascination over Lundqvist and combining him with this team when it's struggling is simply put astounding.
I already pointed out Vancouver and Luongo. Detroit won with Osgood in 2008, going to say he is a big-time goalie? The rest of the comment is just stupidity. If you can't comprehend the idea that chime in.
Eventually, might be this year with Vancouver, a team is going to win it all with a high-paid goalie. Whether it is an anamoly or not will depend on what we see. If once every 6 years a high paid goalie wins the Cup, then yes I would call that an anamoly.
But, I will say the Rangers (which is the only team I am concerned with) will not win a Cup if they are paying Lundqvist more than 10% of their cap. No goalie in the league right now, not Luongo, not Miller, not Kiprusoff, not Lundqvist is worth 10% of the cap.
Read the whole thread, not explaining it again. Yes, even if he is the best player, the drop-off for a cheaper goalie is not as great as what you gain with better forwards and dmen.
The recipe for a cup changed because of the salary cap. The days of having a stacked core of skaters and then trading for that elite goalie like Colorado did in 1996 are over. It is all about value. Even if Lundqvist is a top-5 goalie, the difference between him and the 20th best is not enough to warrant a difference of $3.55MM in salary (using the 5th highest goalie salary vs the 20th).
Yes, I understood what you were trying to say, but like I said in the 2nd half of my last post, where are you getting these elite players that would make it so we don't need our best player in Lundqvist?
Honestly, I don't even understand how somebody could look at all these Cup winning rosters and say to themselves, "Aha! to be like these teams we need an average goaltender not making much money!"
What I notice as the most important thing these teams have in common, is all the elite young talent they drafted and developed.
We haven't done this because we didn't rebuild or tank, so that's why our only first liner had to be signed from free agency, and as I said before, has major flaws, like always being out with some injury.
And like someone else brought up, if not spending much money on a goalie is so important to winning a Cup, how did Chicago win with a 5MM backup goaltender? That doesn't seem to be very good value.

Can't comprehend the idea? Don't be ridiculous, I can perfectly understand the idea, it's been discussed in what, like 30 threads on the main board already?
It's the flavour of the year. There is no clear recipe for winning the cup, it's how you perform as a collective. How smart your players are, how they perform under pressure, if every last one of them are willing to step up on the plate.
You can talk numbers and percentages all day long. We have 4th liners on this team paid $7 million and you're complaining we have an expensive goalie...
Let's become legit cup contenders and have Lundqvist blow playoff series before we start a discussion like this, ok? Because this is just... I'm out.
I thought I might as well bring this thread back. Goal scoring is not an issue for this team!
They have the 9th most goals scored in the NHL. Also, considering the injuries throughout this season to Gaborik, Cally and Dubinski, it could be even higher which is quite impressive.
Actually.. looking at overall statistics it shows this Ranger team is one of the better teams in the whole NHL.
9th in Goals scored
7th in Goals against
5th in Goal differential
**** I believe it is safe to say this team can realistically compete and perhaps make a major run at the cup this year. Hank needs to be elite in the playoffs like Halak was last year but there is enough talent on this team to compete***

lately they have been scoring in bunches but that's the problem. This yr is so weird. It's either a 2-1/3-2 game that very likely goes into a shootout or a 6-1 blow out win
They still need a #1 C and P QB for next yr but the team does have alot of F depth for sure which makes me optimistic for next yr
this yr I just want them to make the freaking playoffs and then piss some teams off in it. I don't think any of us expect them to go further than 1 round but hey I hope 'm wrong................they are built like a grinding playoff team that could steal a series

No doubt. "Fans" here seem to like to knock the team on paper and ignore the real team that actually shows up everyday.

Not much to "knock" on this team... Perhaps they are not the 1977 Montreal Canadiens? Yes.... LOL
Seriously, this team plays hard and has balance in the whole line up.
The interesting part is that this team is only going to get better and better. With Hank in nets hopefully playing at an elite level in the playoffs this team can go far this year and many years into the future.
Of course there will always be room for improvements, but almost all NHL teams during the salary cap era will have needed room for improvements.
