Missed the game because I was at the Whitecaps' MLS season opener. The awesome atmosphere there had me thinking of playoff hockey.
I was also at the Whitecaps game, it was amazing.

Where did you sit? We were in section 220, right behind where the players come out of the locker rooms.

Tonight was the inaugural game for the Portland Timbers (home opener is 4/14). They lost 3-1, and it still got top billing in the sports section of the local news shows. Even over the beloved Blazers. The one news show at least had a nice little "oh, and by the way" bit about the Winterhawks clinching their division and top spot in the conference tonight.

We're in 206 (STHs)... the opposite corner from where you were... below and to the right of the dudes with the drums.

Do you live in Vancouver?

Portland gets to beat up on a pretty terrible Toronto defense next week.

Up next for Vancouver is Philly.

My childhood buddy Zourab played for the Whitecaps last season... Looks like he was released and now plays for Montreal Impact... but I'll go and see the Whitecaps when they come down to play the Sounders.

He kept the whole thing together in regulation (behind a very solid defensive effort), and made a real statement in the s/o by outlasting Kari. His talent was plainly evident tonight imo.

Coburn was outstanding. The guy is learning and starting to put it all together.

Haven't watched the game but we always say this after Coburn had one of the five games he cares to actually play like he can during the regular season. After the next game he's usually already the bust who will never be more than a decent #4.

There was a rumor of some sort of rule where if you get the game winning goal in the shootout, you're automatically the first star, which is so stupid for something so arbitrary. Given it was in the other team's building whoever got the winner would have gotten it anyways. There was a big outrage when Saku Koivu returned to Montreal but was only the 2nd star because he didn't get the winner in the shootout.

It's nice to clinch a playoff spot in March for once.

Coburn was a treat to watch. Meszaros had a strong game as well. Richards and Hartnell showed some hustle. Bobrovsky had a pretty strong game. Nice to be playoff bound a little earlier this year. Makes it easier on my nerves.

Even if I'm not thrilled about Nödl's game, I'd rather see him on the ice than Shelley from now on.

Leino sends Flyers to playoffs in Texas shootout

For a second consecutive season, the Philadelphia Flyers locked up a playoff position with a shootout victory, they just did it a lot earlier this year. With Saturday night’s 3-2 shootout win over the Dallas Stars, Philadelphia locked up a spot in the postseason in game number 71.

No.

It was awesome to see Coburn play like a beast last night. Not only just the physical plays and solid effort, but at times he really took control of the whole team and appeared to be calmly running the breakouts, and setting the tone on the ice. It's a big step in a player's development to be able to play like that. Now if he can just do that consistently through the stretch/playoffs....

Also, Bob played like a boss. I think with more experience he'll be putting games like that out more often with his talent.

Coburn has been in the league for nearly six seasons now. He does this all the time. Just when you think he's about to turn the corner and make that jump to elite status, he goes back into a funk for the next 10 games. Don't get your hopes up too high with him......

The Habs allow the fans to vote for the 3 stars, however, if a player:

(1) Scores the OT/shootout winner
(2) Has a shutout

they automatically get the 1st star regardless of voting.

I don't think it is a league wide rule.

I was surprised at the amount of flyers fans in attendance. Definitely noticed more "Let's Go Flyers" chants than anything else.

I'm ok with OT winner or shutout I guess. Shootout winner is lame.

No kidding, there was a ton there. Our lets go flyers chants got told by the dallas fans that "pittsburgs better". That didn't really make sense to any of us. Also had a problem with some stars fans that didn't want to stand up in overtime to support their team.

You shouldn't have to stand alone for recent criticism, Gert. I think I referred to them as mediocre. Bob had a great statement game, and his Gumby stop in OT last night was a thing of beauty. It was, however, one game. Let's see how Bob follows this sparkling effort up before anointing the post-season saved.

The thing is, you can't just say "Bob Sucks" and expect to get away with no criticism. Bob has his faults, and is still learning the NHL game and developing. He will go into slumps and have bad games, but he is still a very talented goalie

Last night, the dude was a ****ing # 1.

There are only so many defenseman in the league who can play at that level at all, even for a period, let alone a game, let alone several games.

If in the regular season he gives me this every fifth game but every night in the playoffs, I'll be downright giddy.

yeah, I live here while I go to school. My friends boss has season tickets to the caps, and he was at a wedding so my friend invited me to go. Glad I did, I had a blast!

you were sitting near one of my other friends then. After the first Toronto goal, did you see some Toronto fan stand up and get pelted with ponchos?

Briere needs one more point to hit 60 points. Are there any other teams closer than the Flyers to have 4 player to have 60+ points? I think the only team I can see are the Ducks.
