I don't like our LW depth in that projected lineup at all... And as far as I know Steen doens't have any experience in playing their either. Burrying your top forward prospect on the 4th line in a position not natural to him doesn't seem the smartest move to me...

The decision on D is just as tough. Do you chase Foote, who while fantastic has rarely played anything close to a full NHL season, and will not come cheap? IMO, as much as I like Foote, he's just not worth the type of coin he's going to get, particularly in the Leaf context where he'd eat up tons of space that we simply don't have. If Belfour/Mccabe weren't eating up so much room, perhaps I'd be arguing something different, but IMO we cannot afford to spend more than 3 mil on another player, we just don't have the finances for it.

BTW, while I liked the majority of your lineup Richard

If that line ended higher than -90 for the year, I'd be ecstatic

Whenever Steen has played the wing in the SEL, I think he's looked pretty lost. He's a center.. But I'm sure he could fill a defensive role on a 4th line if he was asked to do it, but as you say, would that be smart considering that he is a developing player? I hope JF sends him to the Marlies instead, if the choice comes down to that.

If Wellwood is staying up to play on the 4th line, I rather see him playing for Marlies, and he'll be a great fan attraction for the team. I rather see him playing over 15+ minutes in the AHL than to play 8 minutes in the NHL on the fourth line. If he can make the team as a 2nd or 3rd liner, that'll be ok.

Yep, my point exactly.

To me, a developign player should be playing with some good, experienced linemates ideally, and getting very limited minutes on the 4th line isn't really the best for Steen's development...

Can anyone think of good, relatively young, but not elite left winger that is an FA and isn't named Satan? I've been looking at the lists and racking my brain, and it has yielded nothing to fill our 2nd line with.

According to the Register, Burke made some salary cap room by declining to extend a $1.405 million qualifying offer to defenseman Martin Skoula, an $857,850 offer to winger Alexei Smirnov and a $495,000 offer to defenseman Lance Ward, making them unrestricted free agents.

Any interest by the Leafs ??

Young enough to grow with ..

Of them, the only one of interest to me is Skoula, but if he turned down 1.4 Mil, I'm not thrilled with the idea of going higher than that.

Alexander Steen ($0.9 Million)
Carlo Colaiacovo ($0.75 Million)

Total: $9.75 Million

Running Total: $29,439,600 ($8.75 Million Remaining)

Current Roster
11 Forwards
7 Defensemen
2 Goalies

Signings
Eric Lindros ($1.5 Million)*
Jason Allison ($1.5 Million)*
Anson Carter ($1.8 Million)
Mike Rathje ($2.2 Million)
Martin Gelinas ($1.75 Million)

Total = $8.75 Million

*=Incentive Laden Contract

Line-Up

Allison-Sundin-O'Neil
Tucker-Lindros-Carter
Gelinas-Antropov-Ponikarovsky
Stajan-Wilm-Steen

Back-ups: Perrott-Kilger

McCabe-Kaberle
Rathje-Berg
Klee-Colaiacovo

Backups: Pilar, Belak, Hedin

Belfour
Tellqvist

Backups: Racine?

Thoughts: This adds a large contigency of Toronto born players, O'Neil, Carter, Allison and Lindros which will hopefuly hlep ourr chance sof signing them, and have them happier being closer to home and playing for the team they cheared on as children. Gelinas adds a veteran presence and can move up and down the lineup as needed while Rathje would be a welcome, stay at home presence on the blueline.

I think I might need to make room for a backup, but the roster looks competitive enough to me. Big ifs on Allison, Lindros and perhaps Belfour, but otherwise a pretty solid lineup.
