Maybe he'd survive more than 10 games.
The first game with Penner, Simmonds was not effective. Murray switched Simmonds with Williams

Surprised that nobody mentioned the Fox Sports jinx or whammy job that they did on Justin Williams. Earlier in the game they flashed up a graphic saying the JW had played in every game this year after missing some 116 games over the previous 3 years. Thanks Fox Sports!

Out 3-4 weeks. Last game of NHL season is April 10th. Playoffs will start 3 weeks from today at the earliest.

If one of our top 6 dmen goes down we could really find ourselves in some trouble now.

Dean got us a top 6 six forward at the deadline, but he failed at getting us a veteren depth defenseman as insurance for the playoffs.

Smyth to sit out until playoffs?

And for those who have been wondering what the hell is wrong with Ryan Smyth, who has disappeared from in front of the net... well, those back poundings have finally taken their toll and it wouldn't surprise me to see him shelved until the playoffs as well.

then again, maybe it wasn't 'failure', maybe the deals just weren't good enough or too lopsided?

True.

But he's been playing a lot better... very tenacious on the puck and holding it down low. Could be better after a couple games, this time.

I don't either. We really don't have anyone to replace him.

So do they call up? Or do they give more time to Clifford and Lewis?

Wow, that would be $10 million sidelined til playoffs if true. Hope Oscar's up for it. He'll definitely live up to his 1/2 of the 2 & 1/2 Men line. We really need JW back ASAP, however. I really like the guy's hustle and leadership.

What's the latest on Clifford again?

Seriously? Why would he waste assets for a defenseman when we have 5 PROVEN dmen and a guy (AMart) who has been playing extremely well. We also have two guys who Dean and TM both trust in Drewiske and Harrold. IMO it would have made zero sense to trade for another veteran dman unless it meant one of our 8 dmen was going back the other way.

we dont need a veteran defenseman.

Drewiske and Harrold have both shown that they are capable of stepping him and being solid #6's

No they haven't. In fact, they've proved otherwise. Harrold, O'Donnel, and Jones were all terrible in the playoffs last year. Not having a legit bottom pair against Vancouver last year hurt us big time. Drewiske hasn't been the same player since suffering his shoulder injury.

In case one of them gets injured. I'm not comfortable with either Drewiske or Harrold starting in the playoffs.

There's a reason why DD44 didn't get used in the POs last year. He hasn't been the same since the shoulder injury. Harrold is OK, but was terrible in the playoffs last year.

I'm not talking about giving up significant assets. Just a mid round draft pick for a decent depth guy rental. That's all. Kind of like how we got Modin as a depth forward, in exchange for a 7th round pick.

Indeed. There may have been nothing available for a reasonable price. Perhaps "failed" is the wrong word.

We got Modin that cheap because he was always injured and Colombus wanted to shed salary and give Modin a chance to actually play somewhere. Believe he was actually free, much like Sturm. The 7th was conditional on us winning the cup. Any defenseman that we would get at that value would be around the skill level of Randy Jones or Brett Lebda. I'd much rather have Whiskey or Harrold. Both are accustomed to our style and get along well with the guys in our locker room. Trading for a defenseman would show no faith in either of them and both are competent defenseman. Plus, name one team that carries 9 dmen. I'm perfectly happy with our defensive depth and don't see any reason why we should have wasted any assets on obtaining another one.

To replace Smyth? C'mon, Peter Harrold could replace Smyth and his production at this point.
