So many posters here are saying that we need a off dman, Berard would be our man.Aucoin wants too much, we could sign Berard for cheap, he's injury prone, yeah but he knows how to put the puck in thet net!

What ya think?

For 1.5 million i would definately get him.. A top offensive defenceman who could run our powerplay..

I think you don't build a competitive team by spending your money on one of the more flawed defensemen in the league. He's a rover more than a defenseman; something Montreal doesn't need.

Berard is pretty bad defensively, I think that's why people are not that interested in him.

Yes He wouldbe great. We put him on the second pairing with someone better in his won end like Rivet and it would be great.

I would think that Aucoin does want more then people expected.

I think the choice Bob makes will depend on the price asked, who ever it is.

We could always sign a good defensive defenceman...for cheap. You guys made a point, Aucoin is way more reliable defensively.

Don't we need a off dman?

This might not be a bad choice to replace Brisebois, but we'd still need a number-one D-man.

Montreal needs a defenseman that's strong, a fierce competitor, strong in down-low coverage and can make an outlet pass.

I don't think there's a great need for an offensive defenseman. Markov and Souray are solid on the PP, and to be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing Komisarek get some playing time on the second PP.

This is why I don't see a great need in Aucoin. He's expensive, and doesn't fulfill all the needs Montreal has.

Foote would be ideal, but that's a pipe-dream.

Berard would be a waste of 1.5 million of salary that could be put to better use to a player to play on the 3rd line or to add to a more talented player to play on the top 2 lines.

Yes but it's a nice dream indeed. If it came down to only signing Foote without anything left for a top-6 forward, I'd do it without blinking. Foote to me is the missing link on that D-squad. A Markov - Foote first pairing would make me quite happy and that Dman alone would, IMO, have a far greater positive impact with the Habs than any other forward, including Kovalev.

Don't we already have Markov for that? He was the best D in the Russian league this year

I would be greatly disappointed if that's all Gainey can ink for the Habs after all the talk we've been hearing about the need for a solid D. Maybe he's already decided to sign Mark Streit and close the book. I think that watching Foote, Aucoin, Niedermeyer, Hatcher, and others end up in other cities will be a much greater disappointment to most Habs fans than the signing of Carey Price instead of a sniper.

I don't think the Habs are going to spend much money this season. They may sign free agents but more filler players instead of stars. Maybe take a flyer on an Allison, or Berard or maybe even a Lapointe
