I like the Leafs' current system with the retired and honoured numbers. No need to change it.

I also like how Wilson doesn't let 14 be worn because of Keon even though it's not officially honoured (yet).

What exactly is the Leafs current system with retiring jerseys?

Per @BergerFAN590, the Leafs will raise a #13 Mats Sundin banner at the ACC. It will be specially re-enforced to ensure that it never waves.

Yes..I agree as well. Vaive played on some pretty lousy Leaf teams but can you name another TML in its long rich history with 3 consecutive 50 goal seasons? Nope. In fact there hasn't been many 50 goal scorers for even one season. I can think of Andreychuk and Leeman but that's about it.

Its really kind of strange considering how long the Leafs have been around.

Players who suffer career ending injuries/die while playing for the Leafs = retired
Especially notable players = honoured

Retired numbers are only done if a player suffers a career ending injury or dies while on the team, hence why only Bailey and Barilko are retired. These numbers cannot be worn again are on silver banners.

The rest of the numbers are honoured, meaning they get the white banners and all the same treatment as retired numbers, but can be worn by other players.

Agreed that Vaive should be up there.

Keon/Vaive and then Sundin.

Just 3 from the top of my head that should be up there.

Let's pass the Curse of Keon, the last guy to captain the Leafs to a cup, needs to be in the rafters, if he shows up or not, just get the Curse of Keon out.

George Armstrong was the captain in 1967. Keon won the Conn Smythe.

From Wikipedia:
The Leafs have a policy of retiring numbers only for players "who have made a significant contribution to the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club and have experienced a career-ending incident while a member of the Maple Leaf team".Barilko (whose career ended with death) and Bailey (whose career ended with a severe head injury) dubiously met the criteria.

Copy the Habs?

We're pretty much the only team to do what we do.

Sundin deserves full retirement. All time leading scorer of an Original 6 franchise....it should not even be a debate.

Maybe he does deserve it, but what he did doesn't really compare to that of Bailey and Barilko.

Bailey had his career ended and nearly died after fracturing his skull, and helped lead the Leafs to a Cup in 1932.

Barilko's story is well known.

Sundin leads the team in points and goals all time, impressive? Yes. Would another franchise retire his number? Probably, but the Leafs do things different.

Didn't Wilson say some numbers are unofficially retired and cannot be worn? I think he mentioned 13 in an interview before the first Kadri call-up.
