I think people misunderstand it. I don't see it as him congratulating himself, instead I think it's him being appreciative of the other combatant and the fight they just had.

if he did it only when he clearly wins it would be bush but he does it all the time and looks like he means it........had the athletic director from princeton sit next to me a few games back and he had nothing but praises about his work ethic and sportsmanship, basically just a great kid werwe his words

Because it's lame and I'm a fan of the team he's on.

I always think it's part of the enforcer's job to be a badass all the way around, and that little clap seems to go against everything that is classic NHL enforcer code. Probert, Brown, etc never clapped after their fight even when they killed people.

Even if he KO's the other guy senseless, he should skate away all cool.

Example: Evander Kane schooling Cooke. Even though he's not an enforcer that made the KO 100x more badass. Clifford also generally shows respect.. Also that guy that recently schooled Clifford.

^ Yeah it isn't to show up the other guy at all. he did it when he had blood gushing down his face. I do think he looks like a clown doing it though. I guess it is like his trademark or something.

Here I thought it was because the assumption behind fighting is to hype up the crowd and the home team, so win or lose, his clapping is his post-fight way of saying to everyone who can see him "TURN IT UP!!"

No, I agree that it's probably not to show the other guy up. Maybe he's happy he got a chance to do his job. I'm sure the reason isn't something classless as he seems like a classy guy.

Regardless, it's lame. As you said, he looks like a clown doing it. Enforcers don't clap.

It's like there's no crying in baseball. It's somewhere in the rulebook.

LoL, I totally wasn't expecting that from Tony coming into this thread.

I don't care either way. I thought it was stupid when I first saw it, and if the fights were serious I would think he should stop, but they are pointless, staged, and a joke. The enforcer role as a whole is a joke. So I don't care what he does either way, it is not like he can hurt the tradition any more.

Stan Johnathan did the cut throat motion
Tie Domi did the fist roll
Bob Probert pumped his fist when he was young
Ken Baumgartner had the flinch

Why anyone would give a crap about Westgarth's clapping is beyond me. He doesn't do it at his opponent and he doesn't hold his hands above his head and skate in a giant circle doing it he just does it.

Are we really going to become a fanset who critique's our own enforcers style post fight?

If we are then I am writing an entire series of threads about how lame it is that some of our players kiss each other after a win.

Come on, really? Lets find things about our opponents to complain about. Westgarth has a very tuff job and you feel sick to your stomach about it before and after it happens, I don't care what the guy does as long as he can keep scrapping.

Some people complain about the lamest things. If you don't like it change the channel when he goes to the penalty box lol!

... I dunno. I thought it was pretty comical when I first saw it, but whatever. I actually like Westgarth as a player, and as a fighter. I just don't think he belongs in the NHL.

What's hilarious here is fans telling other fans what they should/shouldn't complain about. It bugs me and so it was posted. Others disagreed.

That's what sports-related messageboards are for.

I kinda like it. But I wish he would clap the other guy's head as hard and with the tempo that he claps his hands with.

He can clap from the press box as much as he wants. Everyone will be happy then.

I don't mind it because I like fighting and I'm pumped when he does it but it's probably not a good idea. Nobody understands the meaning behind it so it doesn't cast a good light on him.

I'd like to see Westgarth attempt a one-handed clap.

And when he does he starts slowly spinning. Then faster and faster and faster until the icetroturf becomes a gas and everyone except him pass out leaving him the ultimate victor.

He does it after a solid fight. Dont think he is bragging or pulling a young Tie Domi, just giving props to him and his opponent thats all.

I agree. Its not like he is spitting on his opponent, he's just clapping as he leaves the ice. I can't understand the trouble with it.

Who cares. It motivates the vast majority of the fans and I am all for it. Not everyone is as nonchalant cool as you.
