Locking up Doughty...

I understand that there is still plenty to play for at this point and that this discussion is often best left until the offseason, but... What do you think will happen with regards to his new contract? Will Lombardi go longer than 7 years like Johnson? I can't imagine Lombardi receiving an offer sheet for him with what his contract will look like.

Short term, it will keep Drew motivated till he is a bit more older and more mature. Plus when it comes to Drew; the Kings are going to want to know, what the new CBA will look like before they hand Drew a seven year contract.

How much is he worth to you guys? This scares me because although he's a great player, I think his name will bring in more money than his talent.

I would try to lock him up to either a long term contract that would keep him a King for the next 10 years where when it ends he will still be in his prime and by which time we will have at least had to have made our first cup run as a top 4 in the league favorites or we will prove that we have been mistaken.

That said if a long term deal doesn't work then the shorter the term the possible I suppose. As long as he is an RFA by the time his next deal ends (providing it is short term) then it would buy us time to try and work things out with him long term and it will take us past the next CBA (providing they don't continually extend it).

I wouldn't take any defenseman in the league over DD, on any contract.

he's not going anyplace so i'm not worried. DL will watch the #'s so his cap doesn't get out of whack and all will be fine

Unless he has a monstrous playoffs (not unlikely), he's doesn't deserve very much. I'd offer him one or two years in the 4M range.

and you think he would take that?

He is our best all around dman. He will be our highest scoring dman with the best plus minus in the group...and you think he will just take 4 mill which JJ just got?

He will easily be in the 5+ range for a short term contract.

I want to see how he responds in the playoffs in our current situation before i make a statement like that.

I know it's also debatable, and I'm not trying to open this can of worms, but IF (boldfacing that for those of you who are going to go THERE ISN"T A PROBLEM OMG) his alleged (perceived?) lack of work ethic IS an issue, I'm a bit leery of throwing the bank at him until he proves otherwise. Carrot on a stick, so to speak.

The fact he's playing in LA and has a name shows how high his talent level is.

I see either a 2 year deal around $9-11 million, or a 7-12 year deal at around $7 million per (maybe $6.5 million per if it's a 7 year deal).

I don't know, but that's where I'd start.

JJ is obviously not a comparable, but he did take less than any of us expected on his 2nd contract (1.425m). Also, I didn't say 4M, I said 4M range.

The way he is playing now, and considering his RFA status, I would say he might be worth 5M.

6-7 depending on length, and hell expect and get 7.5 or 8 if the term eats a couple years into UFA. So its 2/12 or 8/50.
