Gorges/Markov/Subban/Wiz/Spacek

then add in maybe Gill, and you still need more toughness from another dman. We definitely need a Mara type player.
Well at least qualify him, he's a somewhat nhler. he's cheap and we can always trade him.

Unfortunately this year was a was for Gorges but I wouldn't award a contract based on what he might have done.
One good year? He's probably been our most steady defenseman from 07-08 to 09-10.

I'm all for trading Weber to improve the offense. Mara, to me, makes a fine #6/7, who shouldn't cost too much on the cap.

Markov - Gorges
Gill - Subban
Hamrlik - Wisniewski
Mara

Would be a phenomenal defense next year IMO.
I'd take Hammer over Spacek for sure, but, I don't think we can dump Spacek. But either way, that's a good group of 7 guys. We have puck movers, scoring, a bit of toughness and 1 solid d specialist in Gorges.

If we're signing wiz to a big contract he's gonna be in our top 4:

Markov - Subban
Wisniewski - Gorges
Gill - Spacek

Weber, Mara

With the D I mentioned, the idea of a "top 4" becomes moot. That is really 3 pairings I'd always be comfortable with having on the ice. If you really want, pair Subban with Markov, and have Gill - Gorges as your "third pairing". Either way, that D would be one without a weak spot (unlike the Gill - Spacek pairing in your D).

As far as getting rid of Spacek is concerned, if we can sign the other guys, I'd really like to see what I've proposed previously looked at: Spacek to Edmonton for Souray, Souray to Hamilton. Helps the Bulldogs, clears Cap room, and the Molsons should be willing to eat the extra 800k for just one season.

Dunno, I like the idea of a top 4 to be on the ice like 80% of the time.

And I really don't want Hamrlik back, he's finished.

I respectfully disagree...........Hamrlik during that period. And I say that because Hamrlik has played against top lines that entire time and contributed offensively and blocked a million shots........well, not that many.

2007 - 2008: Gorges was barely on the radar

2008 - 2009: because of injuries played top 4 minutes but not the whole season

2009 - 2010: good season and really became noticed in the playoffs

2010 - 2011: half a season. He was off to a good start but...............

He's a defensive specialist with not much upside offensively. I would definitely take him over Gill though.

What's wrong with keeping Hammer at around 3M$?

Hamrlik has said he'd take a paycut and limited responsibility. With an offensively challenged team and if there'd be a spot on the third pairing for him I'd take him in a heartbeat. He shouldn't be judged at the end of a second season where he's had to share a boatload of responsibility filling in for the injured. Over 30 points, plus player, 4th in blocked shots, all while playing against top lines and he's finished?

A player of his caliber on a 3rd D pairing would give give the third / fourth lines some added punch offensively.

Also a little bit shocked how much you guys hate Weber. He's going to be a very good one. It's unfortunate he's missing out on a year of development because of our injuries. This was supposed to be his AHL season like Subban's last year. Right now Weber is in the boat that Patches was a couple years ago. He needs confidence and a little bulk added. He was very good for us defensively for a stretch up until being paired with Picard.

Two different positions, different roles and very different in terms of their value to the team. For one thing, ATOI: Hamrlik 22:19, Darche 11:00.

The one thing that stands out about these two guys to me is their dedication to Montreal. Wiz started taking french lessons within weeks of being traded to Montreal. Now Sopel's wife and kids actually moved to Montreal. This is pretty big considering they stayed in Chicago after he was traded to Atlanta.

Apparently they are living in a hotel but its still a pretty big gesture to move them during the school year.

No heart or commitment, trade him for a bag of pucks.

Was misguided by the article:

The wife of Brent Sopel blogs about life as a wife to an NHL player.

Kelly Sopel and her four children finally moved to Montreal this past weekend, and on Monday Kelly sat down with Mutsumi Takahashi to discuss life as the wife of a hockey player, and her blog, Life of a Hockey Widow.

When you read her blog, it looks like you are right, its just for Spring Break.

If I was PG, I'd seriously consider trading Spacek to Edmonton for Souray, then burying Souray in the minors to save cap space.

I'm a big Wiz fan. Guy is growing on me. I doubt you keep him at anything under 4mil to be honest. He's a more rounded defenseman than I originally thought. Personally I'd make sure he stays. And agreed about Mara. Need more guys to impose respect out there.
