I feel Meszaros has been fantastic, He's come up with big goals, or set up big goals, been solid in his own end, and personally I felt he was looked over for the all-star team. he's been as good asPronger and Timonen. He really hasnt taken many nights off, and I'll admit, at first, I was upset he was gonna be an overpaid 5th defenseman. He is a top 4 guy for sure, if not 2. Been very happy with him.

(and carles not a bad contract...so think about that for a minute!)

kimmo @ 6.333 (or whatever it is) IS a lot, but he's a bit of a leader (for not being a native english speaker....OBVIOUSLY)

I've loved Meszaros a few years back, when he was on the Sens he screamed of a flyers type D-man...now hes finally back in that form
To be completely honest, Coburn's contract is terrible.

by salary or by years?
3.2 for what the big boy can bring (and really has these past few games...) is a steal

when he gets his feet moving and starts hitting coby is a monster.

his potential ceiling is still there people, give him time!

Also, someone needs to tell Giroux he should have stopped playing at the all-star break.

OK. So now we're resorting to bringing up hypotheticals that have no basis in reality in order to defend Timonen now?

Riiiiiiiiiiight.

Meszaros at $4 million looks like a steal compared to Timonen at $7 million this year folks. Fact.

6.3 million.

edit: and no, no he doesn't. Timonen is better than Mez, and he's a leader.

edit2: There's nothing wrong with that hypothetical, and I think it's a valid question to ask. If Pronger is absolutely horrible, but is only making 500k, that makes it acceptable to you, right? Despite his 4.9 million dollar cap hit, which would make it difficult to replace or move him?

Bolded is actually an opinion. Fact.

Why are you still at this anyway? I think it's time to start asking what Kimmo Timonen did to you. Did he smack your sister and dump her, take your girl to prom in high school? What is it? You can be honest, we won't think less of you.

Giroux,I have absolutely nothing against Timonen bro. I think he's over-rated. Especially given his salary and play this season. That's about it.

How I got painted into being a Timonen hater, that I don't know.

Well, you've stated that you think Timonen is no better than Mez, Carle, or Coburn. Interestingly, Timonen has generally been called "underrated" by everyone else, including knowledgeable observers from other fanbases.

It's probably because you spit as much hate and misunderstanding as actors of the adult film genre.

Timonen slowing down, losing his edge, is still better than a lot of defensemen in the league, and that accounts for everyone on our D except Pronger.

What?

As for your Timonen point exactly what are you smoking?

Timonen "slowing down, losing his edge" is still better than A LOT of defenseman in this league?

Dude, that was the reality of what you were suggesting.

Yes, what you were suggesting was that dumb. You want to ignore cap hit and focus on real per-year salary. That's fine, but that means when players are getting paid low wages as their contracts scale down you're OK with them sucking.

$3.2M for our fourth best defensemen is an overpayment. Especially for a guy who is as inconsistent as Coburn.

Yep. Coburn is a nice player, but his lack of real offensive ability and defensive inconsistencies are problematic at 3.2M. Course this organization is also incapable of developing its own D, so that doesn't help any on the cost of D.

Man I can't wait for 2 years from now, when Kimo is getting paid 3mil. At that point only his cap hit will matter...

I wouldn't say Timonen is overpaid. When he came to Philadelphia, much like Briere, they were going from winning environments to a team that finished last overall. As a team that finished last, they had to open the cheque books to bring both players in. That's the reality of the sport. With that being said, Timonen has certainly earned that salary he got. In terms of overall play, there hasn't been a better defenseman in Philadelphia since his arrival, and that includes Pronger.

Timonen is a workhorse. He's what the franchise needed after Eric Desjardins retired. I know I've said on numerous occasions that Desjardins was also making too much money, but once he was gone, it was very easy to see how devastating that was to the franchise. Timonen will be the same. You can never underrate a guy who plays 20+ minutes a game, excels on the PP and PK, and plays probably the smartest positional game out of any defender. Oh, and you can throw in that Timonen is as tough as nails because I've never seen a defender get run as often as Timonen has and just continue to bounce back from it.

Any Flyers fan would consider themselves lucky that this team has him in the lineup and that he really is one of the best in the game.

When D like Sarich are making >3.2 million, Coburn is doing okay for his money. 2.75 would be perfect for Coburn, but alas we know Holmgren always gives ~500k extra

A game or two ago, Therien discussed the team's best dman and he was highly supportive of Timonen and Saunders agreed. The conversation included other names but more so as afterthoughts by comparison.

Was that the game where Therien told his Liz Taylor story?
