I have no problem promising things to guys. If they don't make the team and get sent to the AHL oh well. He's still under contract and has to play. Haha.

This is from a newspaper closeby to where Da Costa attends college:

http://www.eagletribune.com/sports/x...eet-with-agent

Quote:
Merrimack College's sensational sophomore Stephane Da Costa flew to Toronto this morning to meet with his agents Wade Arnott and Ed Ward. A decision on his NHL future is likely to come this week.

Da Costa, who was eliminated from the Div. 1 NCAA men's hockey Northeast Regional in Manchester, N.H. on Saturday night, has been scouted by at least 20 NHL teams over the past two seasons.

According to sources, Ottawa, Florida and Minnesota are the favorites to land the Merrimack center with Philadelphia, St. Louis, Nashville, Boston, Pittsburgh, Toronto and Vancouver among potential long shots.

Da Costa's contract will follow the same structure as those in the 2010 entry draft under the NHL's CBA, meaning he'll earn a $900,000 base salary and is eligibly for up to $2.85 million in bonuses. Unless there is an NHL CBA extension by July 1, all player bonuses count on next year's salary cap, meaning his cap hit next season would be $3.75 million, if he signs a deal with the full bonus structure that is currently in place.

Da Costa won't sign with the Flyers, according to Seravalli:

Quote:
For the second year in a row - Holmgren doted on UMass forward Casey Wellman last season - the Flyers did not get their guy. Holmgren confirmed to the Daily News yesterday that the Flyers are officially out of the running for the Frenchman's services.

According to sources close to the situation, Da Costa and his party met with Minnesota Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher on Tuesday. Fletcher is the one who nabbed Wellman last year. Sources also indicate that Florida, Ottawa and Boston are still very much in the hunt.

With the Flyers, Da Costa was less interested in money and more interested in how quickly he could crack the roster. Holmgren could not promise anything, as he already has a stacked NHL lineup.

makes sense, why play in Adirondack when you could be playing in the NHL?

That's tricky. The Wild promised Casey Wellman a spot last season - which he got. He played 12 games last year with the Wild. This year he's played 15.

I am fine with passing on him, as he wants (and will get) the max bonus, and without the cushion next season there is no way the team could fit 3.75 million under the cap for an unknown (assuming he would be on the big club).

meh whatever. We got all worked up over not getting Gilroy a couple of years ago too, and hes been a healthy scratch for the Rangers this year at times.
Probably too soft of a player for some Flyer fans anyway

All I know is, if he did get the 3.75 mil with bonuses....that would mean he would make as much as Giroux.

We better be pretty damn good for them making that much lol

He sounds like a sure-fire, can't-miss prospect. Just like Fabian Brunnstrom and Jonas Gustavsson.

He doesn't get the full 3.75, those are bonuses. What they are saying is if the CBA isn't extended, then all bonuses count towards the cap hit that season even if they are not yet achieved.

My bad, it sounded like you were balking that he would be paid 3.75 million.

He's playing vs. Leafs on Saturday, to burn the first year of the two year ELC deal now. Great for him, gets out of ELC range more quickly - smart move by Ottawa.

He also fits in well with large francophone community too.

Smart move all around. A team that needs him now in more ways than one.

Better than facing two years in Glens Falls....

Next year bonuses will count against the cap unless the CBA is extended in the next couple of months, which seems unlikely.

Anyone have an idea where Ottawa is fitting him in their lineup?

The NHLPA would be foolish not to extend the CBA because salaries have gone up every year. If I remember correctly, it's been said that players are making more money now than before the revenue based cap. It'll be the owners who won't extend it because you can bet that they're going to want to get rid of guaranteed contracts and have a hard cap in place.

Nothing innovative though, the Flyers did the same with Potulny in 2006.

Probably the best shot for him to play early. I look forward to seeing him play this weekend after all the recent hype.
