i did a search and couldn't find a rollie melanson appreciation thread.

i was just thinking earlier today, did we miss a golden opportunity last year?

what if gillis had decided to get lou a full-time goalie coach after the first chicago series? last year's hawks were a deep and excellent team, but luongo playing deeper in his net, with better focus, playing until the whistle, not diving or looking at refs while the puck is still in play-- captaincy or not, i think lou + melanson last season could have taken us on a run. depleted blueline or not, god modeTM luongo would have given us a shot against any of the remaining teams. not saying we would have won, but i think we could have.

on the other hand, even if we'd somehow beaten the hawks the actual luongo of last season would have 100% fallen apart facing the big san jose and philly forwards.

I think you also have to consider that Luongo's current stellar season has much to do with this year's much deep deeper defense.

True, but at the same time when the D has completely abandoned him for a period or two, he's been there to shut the door, mostly with really sound positioning and control.

He's not flopping as much.

The combination of a great Luongo and a solid team D has us in the lead ATM for the Jennings.

Yup; reason why he's no longer working there was that Price didn't seem to take to his instruction - though Halak did (and you can see the results - Halak played great while Price didn't).

Not really, considering their top six hasn't been healthy at any one time this season.

Mitchell left in the offseason, and one of Edler and Salo have also been injured the entire season. Hamhuis, Ballard, Bieksa, and Alberts have also all missed 15+ games each.

They've held up remarkably well considering the injuries, but it's been nothing like a cakewalk.

Hopefully he can get Luongo to stop lunging wildly for pucks and calm down his movements in net.
Looks like he's definitely helped what I had hoped!
