Belanger Re-signs (nhlpa.com)

nhlpa.com has his 2005-06 salary as $758,100 so it looks like he signed his qualifying offer.

Same source shows Corvo also has re-signed.

What's not to like about E-bel? Sure he'll probably top out as a 3rd line center, but he'll be a damn good one.

Great faceoff skills, speed on the PK, and the occasional goal for $758k? Sounds good to me.

Ebel has zero grit, no size, poor defensive positioning, and is just a giant pus..... Giving him a QO was the right thing to do, but the best thing the Kings can do now is move him somewhere once the season begins, and player movement slows down.

I agree. I think a change of scenery might do E-bel wonders, and he might actually become a 2nd line center somewhere else.

DT shouldn't have even qualified him. They guy has never done a damn thing without Lappy riding shotgun. He can't play on a scoring line, can't kill penalities, and makes far too much money for an energy line player.

The Kings would have been better off letting him go for nothing, slotting Avery in at center, and putting the $750K towards a defenseman.

Not true.

In 01-02, Ebay was our best face-off man and PKer. Since then, however, he's shown a considerable lack of determination. He became a so-so face-off guy and PKer. Who knows? Perhaps the year off has rejuvenated him and this season he'll play like he did in 01-02.

Package him and Corvo for Boulton or Worrell. Lets keep the wusses to a minimum on this years team.

No, true.

Belanger has always been a poor penalty killer. He just doesn't have that "head-on-a-swivel" aspect needed to excel at that facet of the game. He was truly awful last season, which may be the lack of determination that you speak of, but he was always behind Stumpel, Smolinski, Palffy, Deadmarsh, CJ, Lappy and even Allison on the PK depth chart. He just loses concentration in the defensive zone, and isn't positionally sound enough to compensate for it.

Now we have only Conroy and Frolov in front of him, and lets face it, the guy has never been able to live up to even the lowest expectations. His offensive totals have to be viewed as a pleasant surprise, because he's never been consistent and folded like a cheap suit when put into an offensive role. He has never produced without Lappy on his wing - the two have some weird chemistry that allows each of them to play over their heads, but neither has ever done anything alone.

He has been cast in a role that suits his abilities: forechecking and face-offs. There seems to be a common misconception that both Belanger and Trent Klatt are defensive minded players, and it just isn't true. They are forecheckers pure and simple. We have many, many young players who can also provided this to the big club, and Belanger's salary could have easily been used to bolster areas of weakness.

Boulton is a UFA - Buffalo passed on his QO.

Personally, and I've never subscribed to the goon-as-deterrent philosophy, I'd rather have Matt Johnson. He can take 8-10 minutes a game and not hurt your chances when he's on the ice.

I think Belanger is a very solid 3rd line player in this league. He had a bad year but this guy when on top of his game can light up the lamp pretty well for a 3rd liner because he has excellent hands, and I believe he's a smart defensive player. I wouldn't have gotten mad if, he wasn't with us this season but I'm glad we qualified him because now atleast we can trade him if we don't want him.

I've never been a fan of Belanger and always thought that the time to trade him was 4 years ago when he still had trade value. I don't think the Kings should've offered him a QO. He's already far too old (28 in Dec) to become a late bloomer. There's a chance that he can get a second wind if he goes to a struggling team which'll give him a good bit of ice-time, but he doesn't (or at least shouldn't) have a future on the Kings, IMO... at least not as a regular.

This is a good signing for the Kings even if they are heavy at center right now. Demitra, Roenick, and Camm have all played wing so theres plenty of room for all of them. Belanger is fine defensively and I don't see how he can be criticized for lack of production offensively when the best line he has ever played on was with Robitaille and Laperriere. He's a good face off guy and has a knack for scoring important goals, every team has a player like him. Be glad he isn't costing us more towards the 39 million.

Even a 'scrub' like Andrei Nazarov is paid $625,000.00. I think you slightly exaggerate.
