No reply's yet? Well, I think this is a great signing for the ducks. I think this makes the rivalry even more now. The Kings just need to get a center who can feed Demitra the puck, unless he ends up playing center. Demitra is sort of like the Kings version of Peter Sykora, of the ducks. But if Palffy is gone, who will be the Kings version of Federov? I still think the rivalry will be pretty good. I have to say though, that having Ozolinsh and Niedermeyer on the same team will mean that the ducks will have arguable the best two puck-moving defensemen in the league. Especially with these new rules.
Another thing to consider is that the ducks have a prospect (Mark Popovic) coming in who, with the looks of his stats, could be the ducks third puck-moving defenseman, making them a team with possibly the best three puck-moving defenseman in the league. Here are his stats. He seems like a young version of Scott Niedermeyer.

OVERALL RANK
The OHL representatives had a very respectable showing and produced three of the top four overall results. Below is a breakdown of the contingent’s stats and their overall rank out of the 35 skaters that participated in the skills testing.

Overall Skills Testing Rank #1
Mark Popovic – Toronto St. Michael’s Majors

Popovic proved that he has all the tools to be an impact player at the next level. The talented defenceman turned in amazing results in every discipline of the competition. He was among the top eight in every category and was the winner of the 60’ dash in an impressive 2.596 seconds. The Majors’ captain showed off his great rushing ability with a third place finish in the Puck Control event. A very impressive performance that is sure to solidify a top pick in the 2001 NHL Draft.

Puck Control (sec.) 60’ Dash (sec.) 150’ Dash (sec.) Full Lap (sec.) Hardest Shot (m/hr)
16.937 (3rd) 2.596 (1st) 5.716 (6th) 14.365 (3rd) 93.3 (7th)

http://www.hockeysfuture.com/article.php?sid=1986

He would have made the team a couple of years ago, but the ducks wanted him to log lots of minutes playing on the farms teams as the top D-man, rather then limited minutes in the NHL. But, especially with the new rule changes, he is ready to step up. All I have to say is that I look forward to the Ducks/Kings games this year. Will be a great rivalry.

Congrats on the Niedermeyer signing, that's a mighty catch. Makes the Ducks' PP all the more powerful.

I think you might be getting your hopes up for Popovic however. Granted, he's a great prospect, putting him as one of the top three puck-movers behind your other two d-men is kind of an overstatement. There's plenty of other guys out there that play great offense.

I wonder who the Ducks are going to have to give away now that they've put themselves into CAP check mode??? According to TSN, they're at $32.1-million for 12-guys...

Federov, Neids, and giguere takes up almost 1/2 of the cap...

I doubt this team challenges for the cup....

And there's still a possibility that Kariya could go to the Kings. That would make this rivlary very interesting indeed.

You are forgetting about the talent they have coming up this next year. With guys like Lupul, Getzlaf, Perry (scoring champion in OHL last year, and played on first line with Crosby in the junior championships), and Chistov (should have a great year with the new rule changes and the ducks new style of play), they should be competitive. I expect the kings and ducks to both be very competitive. Should be fun to see how both teams do. I would love to see them both make the playoffs and play eachother in the Western Conference Finals.

Not forgetting, just assuming that many of them are probably at or close to the entry level max. salary. Vets will need to be shed or the youngins don't get fit in under the CAP...

No doubt they've picked up a great player. We'll just have to sit back and see how it all works out for them. I'm thinking about the repercussions the Forsberg signing triggered in Philly. Surely it wasn't that long ago that people have forgotten already!!!

Good pickup, a little too expensive imo. But great dman for sure. I can see the quackers moving some $$ around, not much cash remaining to fill the holes. They have to sign some rfa's as well. 7 mil, damn

If the Kings can hold there own against the top 2 lines they will win every game once the Ducks put their 2 AHL lines on the ice. Because with their payroll thats what ANA will look like....

Really??? OMG, the Sux have less than $7 million to sign 9 players??? I can fix their problem:

John Tripp $650k
Jason Holland $700k
Brad Chartrand $400k
Mike Pudlick $450k
Brad Norton $500k
Mikko Eloranta $650k
Jozef Stumpel $1.3 mil

Dammit, I really can't think of any more cheap, useless players!!!

:-)~~~

Oh wait, how about Billy Tibbets? Ted Donato, anyone?? Freakin' Kip Miller??? LoL

Great signing for them but they are capped out now. Great D-men but their forwards don't scare me. I think they can make the playoffs but we are the better team.

Brian Burke says he's not done yet. I'm guessing Sykora will be traded and a cheaper scoring option picked up.

I figured they'd be dropping Sergei but Burke has given the indication he will stay.

we dont even really needt o worry that much about their top 6...if we shut down federov, then where is their offense going to come from...the rest of the guys are more like 3rd liners anyways...leclerc, rucchin, macdonald...

Fedorov is overpaid but not by much. He should be making about 4.5-5 million dollars, the same as Kovalev. That being said, I'm sure there are 1 or 2 teams out there willing to trade for Fedorov. Things change quickly and after all the mega contracts handed out this week, Fedorov's contract aint so bad if you look at what he brings to the table. Burke is going to keep Fedorov and see how things shake out. If he doesn't play better, I"m sure there will be a trade next year or the year after when Feds only got 1-2 years left.
