UPDATE: Leighton clears re-entry waivers

http://flyers.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=64095

Quote:
LEIGHTON PLACED ON RE-ENTRY WAIVERS
Flyers GM Paul Holmgren confirmed early this afternoon that the club has placed goaltender Michael Leighton on re-entry waivers.

Leighton will have to wait the 24-hour period to clear waivers, and during that time can be picked up by any of the 29 other NHL teams and be responsible for half of his salary on their cap with the Flyers paying the other half.

Leighton is coming off of back-to-back shutouts with the Flyers AHL affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms, this past week. He currently owns a 14-12-3 record to go along with a 2.22 goals-against-average and .926 save percentage in 30 games played. His five shutouts on the year with Adirondack are tied for sixth in the AHL, as well as his 2.22 GAA. His .926 save percentage is tied for fifth. Leighton was originally placed on waivers by the Flyers on Jan. 3 and he was sent to the Phantoms the following day.
RT @TSNBobMcKenzie: PHI puts Michael Leighton on re-entry waivers.

Edit: Today's Daily News:

Quote:
OTTAWA -- Michael Leighton could be back in Philadelphia soon.

How soon?

As early as Wednesday at noon. The Flyers put Leighton on re-entry waivers on Tuesday at noon, giving 29 other clubs a crack at him for half of his $1.55 million salary. The Flyers would be required to pay the other half. Leighton still has one year remaining on his deal that he signed last summer, after the Flyers bowed out of the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Flyers would like to have Leighton available for the playoffs if need be, and re-calling him now - as opposed to when there is an injury - would make it easier to have him on the roster.

If the Flyers had an injury in the playoffs, teams - even those not even participating in the playoffs - would be more likely to place a claim to put the Flyers in a tough spot.

Leighton, 29, has helped carry the Phantoms out of last place in the AHL. He has posted a 14-12-2 record with a 2.22 goals against-average and .926 save percentage.

Leighton has 5 shutouts this season - including back-to-back shutouts in the last 2 games - which gives him 5 more shutouts than the Flyers’ entire team. Leighton even posted 3 shutouts in the postseason last year for the Flyers, where he also had a 8-3 record.

I really hope no one claims him. I have no problem with them putting him in the lineup if he clears, but if he gets claimed I am going to be furious.

I really don't understand this. You've gone with Bob/Boosh all season long and they have performed fine. If he clears, he's not going to be starting so why even take a chance?

No. I don't want his cap hit weighing down this team next season, even at half of that.

He has to clear if he is to be available in the playoffs though.

Isles will claim him. He'll refuse to report because he's Michael ****ing Leighton and he can do that.

If he's claimed, this possibly means the end for Leino, no?

No he can't, because that would basically end his chances of ever being an NHL goalie again.

Really? I didn't think that was the case. If so though, it's still a stupid move. Not worth taking on the cap hit.

From late March:

http://articles.philly.com/2011-03-2...phantoms-debut

Quote:
Flyers Notes
Though it appears to be a long shot, the Flyers haven't ruled out trying to recall goalie Michael Leighton from their AHL farm team.

Leighton has performed admirably for Adirondack, helping the Phantoms steady themselves. Entering Friday, he had a 2.36 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage, and three shutouts.

Is there any chance the Flyers would try to sneak the 29-year-old Leighton through reentry waivers down the stretch or in the playoffs?

"I'm not sure at this time," general manager Paul Holmgren said Friday at the Flyers' practice facility in Voorhees. "We're not at that point yet."

If the Flyers want to recall Leighton, he will have to clear reentry waivers and be offered to teams for half of his $1.55 million salary. He is signed through the end of next season.

Teams could claim Leighton, but they wouldn't be allowed to play him until next season because he wasn't on their roster at the trade deadline. In other words, they probably would be putting in a claim to block the Flyers from having him as an option.

Ahhh...I dont understand this. Another example in Philly how our poor team effort somehow should be attributed to goalies. Bob/Boosh have had a few bad games here and there, but come on now the entire team has. Why make such a public statement of dissatisfaction with the duo right before playoffs?

Unless of course this whole thing is like the 2.0 version of randy jones/john stevens just with leigton/lavy...AHL players with fans on the coaching staff that get to play with the big boys for no GOOD reason.

After the SCF winning goal, Leighton should be in Wheeling, Wv.

I agree if he gets claimed it will be horrible, but someone said earlier they have to clear to be available in the playoffs. I'd rather risk Leighton getting claimed and have to deal with a $750k cap hit next season than have injuries force Sebastian Caron into net in the playoffs. However, if it was not necessary to call him up then this ranks up there with Jones recalling.

Holmgren should be fired if another team claims him. People want him to be claimed? he will eat 750k in valuable cap space next season.
Holmgren still does not get it.

He will be the first one to get a shutout this season. As that happens, Flyer hfboards suicide rate will increase
