He has been playing very well for 20+ consecutive games. I don't know what Americans will be available for the Worlds but if they don't have a deep pool Shannon could be on the team.

They'll likely slap him on the 4th line or sit him as the 13th forward.

That is of course, it him being asked to go is actually true.

Not surprised you are surprised... do you have any idea on the number of times he has been invited to rep team USA? Hint - it is more that three...

i know he's played once, with burke as gm, but that was a weak team, POS and Colin Stewart also made it.

what other years has he been invited?

Probably not. He had 3 goals last go around, could see him playing third line time.

Of course it's true.

Sucks for the States that Anderson won't be going. I saw him play in 06 and he looked good on the big ice. After last year's near catastrophe (where they were one goal away from being relegated) I'm sure they want to put together the best team possible. I expect USA Hockey to be a bit more insistent with top players this time around.

Spezza played great in Halifax. I see no reason why he wouldn't be chosen, if only for veteran leadership. Unlike other team Canada members I met in Hali, who were doing Jager shots til two in the morning before a game day, he stuck to water (at least when I saw him), which says a lot about his commitment to the team.

I've heard from sources quoting Russian papers that Gonchar has already said he won't be playing due to his health problems.

Obviously Wick and Daugy depend on how deep the B-Sens go in the AHL playoffs (assuming they hold on to their spot, which they should). I know Latvia will be severely undermanned this year, with many top guys injured, still playing or refusing to play, so if Kaspar makes it it would be a huge help to the team, especially being in the toughest first round pool. He has a history of doing well against the Danes, including a hat trick in exhibition play, which would be a huge help in that most likely decisive game.

Who cares?

This tournament doesn't deserve the title of "world championship". They only wait for the second-tier Eurotrash leagues to finish. True world championships would occur during the NHL's off-season, similar to when FIBA holds their basketball championship.

The NHL has continuously added games and pushed back its season to have it overlap with the WC, not to mention that the Euro leagues start at least a month sooner than the NHL. If they pushed it back any further, a big portion of the players would be out of game shape. As it is some of them get a month and a half off, even after playing in their leagues playoffs. While basketball has the luxury of being played at any time of the year, hockey in the summer is stupid. No matter how much you try, the ice will not be of the same quality as it is in winter, further risking injury to players. Quite frankly, the NHL should start its season in September. Ice Hockey shouldn't be played in June, whether its the WC or the Stanley Cup playoffs. Either way, by the time the the WC start, 95% of the world's players are available.

Well sure, Id say its closer to 99.9% of the worlds players, but no one gives a **** if Im available to play. Id say about 55% of the worlds best players ARENT available. I dont care if the IIHF moves it, but I certainly dont put the weight into it that a "World Championships" deserves.

there isnt a chance in hell that kuba, alfie, or gonchar go. all are banged up and all have paid their dues for their countries. there is no way any of them go.

i think foligno is getting married this summer, that's why he's not going.

How's that? At the point the World Championships begin only 25% of NHL teams are still playing. Considering not all of the world's best players play in the NHL (Every KHL team and many other Euro teams have top lines are significantly better than third and fourth liners in the NHL), so your math is simply wrong. Everyone knows it's not Olympic caliber hockey, but its still the most exciting hockey tournament to attend as a spectator.

Congrats Spezz!

@SweezyBaby. Rick Nash reps Canada for 7th time. Spezza, Duchene and Ladd also on board. Reimer likely back up or 3rd goalie.

With Nash there too, Spezza is going to have a competent winger. I sure hope this doesn't make him wander off looking for one when the new season starts.

Also, Shannon on Team USA? Good for him, the big ice could help. I hope Karlsson is ok to go too.
