http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=132522

The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms on contracts with goaltender Jussi Markkanen and defenceman Igor Ulanov. Markkanen has agreed to a two-year contract with the Oilers, while Ulanov has come to terms on a one-year deal.

I'm very glad to have Markkanen back. He might not be well known around the NHL, but he's very solid:
Quote:
Playing in 54 of Lada Togliatti's 60 games, the 30-year-old Finn led all goaltenders with a 1.20 GAA as he allowed only 63 goals against in 3,157 minutes. His 11 shutouts were second in the league.
...not bad, in a league that had Nabokov and Khabibulin.

As for Ulanov... whatever problems Ulanov has had on other teams, he's been terrific for the Oilers. He'll be very useful as a 3rd pairing guy, and will be valuable if the younger guys (Semenov, Bergeron, Greene) struggle.

Not flashy signings, but solid moves for the team.

Can somebody explain to me why they'd want Ulanov? Hard work aside, he doesn't bring much to the table.

Ulanov managed to put up 18 points in Edmonton in only 42 games which is projected to 35 points over a full season. He's a warrior who blocked a number of shots and also did a very solid job in his own end. Ulanov may have been terrible outside of Edmonton but he had a very, very good season last year for the Oilers...

Ulanov hates you too.

He made some absolutely amazing defensive plays last year, including monstrous body checks. He was one of my favorite players in the league for a while.

Ulanov plays his heart out in Edmonton and makes a difference there;

he'd shot block his mother from her medicine if it'd help the Oil.

welcome back Ulanov!

some players just play much better in a given city (Linden, Robitaille, etc)

which is it?

1) You've never seen Markkanen play or

2) You're a troll?

Clearly this thread is about the Oilers signing two guys, not about flames fans or flames.

I always enjoyed Ulanov's mean streak in Montreal. He was liable to do anything and that made things a bit more exciting.

Solid enough defenseman as a 5th-6th guy. Every dman at that level (and higher too) makes mistakes on a fairly regular basis, and I expect if they eliminate obstruction as much as they claim they want to we'll see even more mistakes. "Mistakes lead to goals," someone said awhile ago and that's very true.

So Ulanov makes mistakes. So does every dman, particularly the 5th-6th guy.

I'd take him on my team. As long as he maintains that physical dimension to his game.

STH

Awesome signings.
Oh man this team is gonna pack some serious crunch.

Smith, Prongs, Ulie, and Bergeron, and thats just the D.

Its funny how the rule changes were supposed to bring offence and so all the teams start going nuts for D-men.

Juice is a really really solid backup. Let him and Conks fight for the starter's job.

Jeez i can hear the boards and glass rattling already at Rexall hehe

What makes you so sure he would play on your team?

haha...Juicy Rebounds...definately someone hasn't seen Markkanen play. Remember that Oilers vs Flames game late in the season, 1 - 1 tie...Kipprusoff stood on his head? Well so did Markkanen. He hasn't proven that he's a Kipprusoff, but he definately has skill.

Great to see Uli back, too. Some people just don't understand that even though he's lousy everywhere else, he's a monster for the Oilers. I've been saying for the last couple days that aside from signing Smyth, Lowe must secure a goaltender and 6th defenseman. Now let's get Smyth signed long term.
