Meh, all I really know about Philly or Atlanta is the airport, Marriott, and a few restuaurants around the Marriott when i'm on business. Both great cities with a bunch to do, but not when you are there for 1 or 2 days with other engagements. Buffalo is no different...

When it's time to build a new arena again. Let's put it in Amherst/North Buffalo area.

It's where everyone is moving to anyways.

And you're basing this off of....?

Take a look into loft/condo/apartment sales in the heart of the city in the last 3-5 years.

eh, the Buffalo news had a census map about a week ago that showed population change across different districts in erie county, according to that, downtown Buffalo lost a lot of people. Clarence had the biggest growth.

That being said, I still think it's retarded to have an arena anywhere but downtown. Now if only they'd build a football stadium on the waterfront!

Two of the biggest mistakes made in city planning:

1) Putting UB's North Campus outside of the city in Amherst
2) Putting the Ralph in Orchard Park, also outside the city

The region will go as the city goes, unfortunately a point that was lost on many. But that's a whole different discussion.

One could argue it's a better situation for the students, geittng to have a full campus outside the city.

OT: If the campus had been downtown on the waterfront as originally proposed, there would be over 20,000 residents 9 months out of the year. That's a lot of potential for businesses, both food-based and shopping-based, that don't there simply because the school is not there. If the school had been there, things downtown would be far different than they are right now.

That said, it isn't going to change so different solutions have to be found.

You forgot:

3) Putting the 190 and Skyway directly on the water

The 190 was expedient as they simply filled in portions of the canal along the waterfront. Corners cut? Sadly typical of the last 60 years of local planning and governance.
