I'm probably in the minority about Ville Leino...are you?
I don't hate Leino let me make that clear to start. For me though, if the Flyers don't re-sign him, I honestly wouldn't care. Now, I know he's played poorly of late, but it's not the reason I'm making this thread....i've felt this way about Leino since the beginning of the year.
Yes Leino is a nice player but for me he turns the puck over too damn much and holds onto it way too long. Too many times he seems to just take his good old time with the puck, only to trap himself and turn it over. Of course he is a decent player, but like I said, if the Flyers don't re-sign him I really wouldn't be too mad.
I like Ville... Everyone at times on this team carries it alot. JVR does it all the time. So does Richie/Carter.
I'll be honest. I kinda liked him more when he would make those sick dangles. Think last year playoffs. Too many times this season he does that, enter the zone thing and stop. I dont though see the difference between the amount of turnovers he has compared to say JVR or Richie.
HBL has been one of the best even strength lines we have had this year and Leino has been a major part. Even if Leino does not live up to his "big raise" contract, he helps get the most out of the investment of Briere and Hartnell. I think a keeping Leino should be a priority for the front office, even at a significant raise. I am not sure what Lavs will do for playoff lines, but I would be willing to bet that he will go back to HBL if he doesn't start that way. Leino can be shifted up and down the Flyers lineup, he is a valuable piece to this team, but not in the "core".
2.5 is VERY reasonable when you look at scotties 4.2 (blegch...i puked a bit)
personally though, i think villes biggest asset is that he is "one of the guys"...don't underestimate the value of liking the guys you play with and looking forward to practice etc.
thats the #1 thing thats underrated on these boards IMO (HF boards in general, nothing against the flyers section, or this thread in particular)
on the good side though, i think he IS going to sign for something quite reasonable...and i believe he already has that deal in order with homer (they just held off so that we could re-sign giroux...our #1 priority of this year)
He is back with the flyers next year, we were told that Holmer went to Leino and asked him about Versteeg, thus the trade was made. Say what you want about the flyers but they are loyal to their players, he has a verbal agreement with this team. He is a good player and a soild contributor, yes he could shoot more but he is a very useful player on this team. He is going to turn it up, and watch out he is one of the players that makes this team so dangerous, he is not as respected as giroux or briere, but while the other teams are matching against them, that is when he can exploit you.
I liked him a lot as a "buy low" acquisition by Homer who overachieved. I won't like him as much if he gets a >$3M AAV deal. For that we can sign a UFA to a shorter term deal and have a bit of wiggle room and/or be able to deal with JvR's next deal.
Leino's game certainly has flaws but he is a good complementary player to our top offensive guys... that is, when we are playing to the best of out abilities. Let's not forget his stellar play in the '10 playoffs.
Leino is more valuable to the Flyers than any other team. If he hits the free market, I'm positive he will have a disappointing year wherever he goes, because a lot of his success stems from the HBL chemistry (a line I still have a lot of faith in).
That being said, he's gotta come cheap. And if we have a disappointing playoffs this year, it might be best to cut both him and Steeger.
I'm indifferent. I think the free agent options that are available are just as good as Ville is. Obviously if he signs a below market contract or gives some sort of discount, then there's no problem. If he wants a retirement contract he can look somewhere else.
I like him but won't be devastated if he leaves. I'd prefer he gets signed (preferably cheap), but if the team can't afford him I doubt it will really have any serious detrimental impact on the team. I do like the fact that he chose a run at a Cup over a contract (telling Homer to trade for Versteeg even though it would mean they couldn't sign him).
he's insane with the finesse moves that go nowhere. he gets control does a spin o rama or two then turns it over. he should have 30 goals based off puck posession alone. he needs to shoot more. that said. i'm same as everyone else. 2 mil is good enough for a one line chemistry guy. he's like a more dependable zherdev. we'll all find out what's gonna happen soon enough.
