Laperriere is Flyers' Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy nominee

Congrats to Lappy - I don't think he will ever skate for the NHL again, b/c of his injury.

Cheers Lappy.

------------

Dedication, Sportsmanship and Perseverance.

One man on the Philadelphia Flyers greatly excels in each of these categories, without even stepping on the ice for the 2010-11 season.

Ian Laperriere is the Philadelphia chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association nominee for the NHL’s Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which is awarded each year to “the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

He deserves to be a finalist, if not win. He put - potentially - his life on the line to block that shot, and has quietly and professionally dealt with the aftermath. He did what he could to keep playing, and continues to do so, but has always thought of the team and its needs first.

Great nomination.

No disrespect to Laperriere, but I don't get how not playing equates to "dedication, sportsmanship and perseverance."

Because he's been working out and trying to find ways to get back on the ice, all while supporting his teammates and doing whatever the club's asked of him. And because the things he's dealing with are long-term effects of an injury very directly tied to dedicating himself 100% to his team.

If you can't see dedication, sportsmanship, and perseverance in that...you are broken.

It's not like he overcame adversity... he faced a lot of adversity, but injuries took his career. Besides, it's an award given to a "National Hockey League player", and he isn't playing in the NHL.

Sidney Crosby isn't playing either, because of injury.

Guess he isn't an NHL player.

He hasn't hung them up, even though it's likely he'll be forced to.

He's under an NHL contract, working hard to recover from an injury sustained in the line of duty by heroically blocking a shot. With his face. To help his team win.

You have issues.

It's the right way to go, but he probably won't win it.

Not that I agree with the previous point made, and vehemently opposed by others, but this award in it's history tends to go to someone who made actually did make it back to playing in the league. Gord Kluzak is an exception, but the Flyers had no other real candidate so this is the right one. To have actually overcame whatever it is is not a requirement to be nominated, of course.

Joffrey Lupul, Daymond Langkow, Ray Emery, and Pierre-Marc Bouchard each missed more than a year and made it back on the ice. Each of these guys technically missed more time than Lappy has (so far), which is why I think Lappy won't win, but still should be nominated.

The award is for this season. That was last season. With his face.

There definitely should be a minimum amount of games required.

I think it should be Shelley for blocking a puck with his face. He actually played through that.

I'm not being mean but Shelley did persevere better and that's what the award is for. And Shelley is the only reason Giroux doesn't get run every game.

Now, I'm on the limb with your Nickelback avatar, sometimes I like them sometimes I don't, but you sir are making a lot of sense. The award is for perseverance, and Lappy did do the exact opposite. He's being a ***** quite frankly.
