The future to our success is closer than you think. (Long)

It is a 4 and a half hour drive south...

If you look at the past relationship between AHL teams and NHL teams you will see that success in the NHL, begins with Success in the AHL.. Almost all perennial cup contenders have had major success in the AHL before that and even currently.. (Washington - Hershey, Pittsburgh - Wilkes-Barre) are just two examples..

It is not a coincidence that, following 6 years of horrible seasons in Binghamton, Ottawa misses the playoffs 2 times out of 3 years, and finds itself in the middle of a rebuild (If you can call it that, as I believe it will be much shorter than a TRUE rebuild, as we already have the hardest pieces to find..

which are..

- a true #1 franchise center
- a #1 Defensemen (Who, with Karlsson, Cowen, and Rundblad coming, we have 3 player's who COULD claim to be that.. (we could be in for an even better d-corps than the Redden/Chara years.
- Decent to strong goaltending now(Anderson) and in the future (Lehner) (this remains to be seen)

Other pieces we have..

We could be looking at one of the strongest 3rd lines developing that we have ever seen..

between these players.. Greening, Condra, O'Brien, Z. Smith, etc... etc...
(It will be had to top Kelly-Vermette or Ruutu - Kelly - Neil, however)

In other words..

We are 2-3 top 6 players, and 1-2 player developments (Cowen/Rundblad) away from being a strong team..

I am of the opinion that Bobby Butler should stay with Spezza on the top line all year next year, as their chemistry could have a huge effect on our team in the future (Think a better Spezza, with a Poor man's Heatley, type of thing)..

Either way, if you want to see what type of success this team will have in the future, it begins, and ends in Binghamton, and at the Draft..

Murray has done a superb job finding people to develop his young players, as well as finding players with the best chance to develop to the best of their abilities.. We have above and beyond scouting capabilities, as well as the team (behind the scense) to develop them into the best players they can possibly be.. Just look at the strides a TON of our players have made within the last season.. Karlsson, Condra, O'Brien (especially you, big nose) Greening, etc... etc.. the list goes on..

Either way, I do not think many people realize just how important AHL affiliates are... Success in the AHL creates the most sustained (And highest level of) success at the NHL level... When Binghamton fans ***** about not making the playoffs in 6 years, blah, blah. And people say "Well your lucky to have an AHL team as it is really just there for the NHL team" it is immensely ignorant of just how much the success in the AHL, will carry over to the NHL...

Either way, I am sure there will be a couple people in Ottawa coming down to watch the future, in Binghamton these playoffs and for both our sakes (Binghamton and Ottawa). I hope (and believe) it will be a good show!

If Murray adds a strong top 6 forward that he's promised like say Voracek or Perron, and trades up to get Landeskog...

Signs someone like Glencross, Upshall, Tangauy, Arnott.

Voracek-Spezza-Upshall
Landeskog-Da Costa-Alfredsson
Greening-Regin-Butler

Shuffle a couple of guys around if needed.

That would be very interesting to say the least.

Just an idea of course.

All depends on development, but I'm pretty happy that Murray's staying on, seeing how he's built his reputation on drafting and developing.

You guys know David Perron hasn't played since November due to post concussion symptoms right? Murray could probably just call him up and tell him he plays for the Senators now and get him that way.

There is too many what ifs...what if one of the kids becomes an elite defensemen...what if Spezza plays a whole season....What if Anderson pulls a Leclaire.

Obviously im hoping we pull it all together, but im skeptical(about it being a quick rebuild).

i'm not too keen on going too far on the UFA market this year. Maybe a 1-2 year deal, but there is really no-one that warrants a long-term contract from the sens.

next summer, however, i think ales hemsky can be our havlat/briere. We'll have to overpay to get him, but it will have the same impact that those guys had on their teams bringing together their young cores.

I agree. If they want to bring in a top 6er to play with Spezza, no point in getting their hands tied up long term. 1 year contracts would be ideal with this years crop of UFA's.

The 2011-2012 season should be treated like this one post-deadline.

Allow young players the chance to prove themselves and go from there. Find out who is consistent and who is streaky. Then when we have a better picture of this team perhaps add some bigger pieces from a stronger market that won't cost us assets but cap space.

I would love to land Hemsky but he seems to be the top UFA for the 2012 off-season. I imagine he would be looking for 6-7M with a lengthy term.

The UFA list for 2012 would be like:

Erik Cole
Jussi Jokinen
RJ Umberger
Kristian Huselius
Jiri Hudler
Tomas Holmstrom
Ales Hemsky
Dustin Penner
Jared Stoll
Ryan Smyth
Sean Avery
Wojtek Wolfski
Shane Doan
Ray Whitney
Lee Stempniak
Mikael Samuelsson
Alex Semin

Actually he passed the baseline test a few months ago with no signs of PCS. Rumour from an insider is that the St. Louis management has been keeping him out of the line-up to push the anti-headshot agenda.

Just a rumour, but he seemed dead set on the fact that Perron has passed the baseline test and is symptom free and has been for a few months now.

I'll take Ales Hemsky or Alex Semin. Would not touch any other player!

Just because Melnyk says Da Costa is going to be a 2nd line center does not actually mean right away next year. If Ottawa picks up 1 UFA and stays does nothing else but draft, we should be at least competitive. Heck even without any UFA signings it might not be so bad.

Greening Spezza Butler
Michalek Regin Alfredsson
Foligno DaCosta Condra
Smith Winchester Neil

Gonchar Cowen
Karlsson Phillips
Lee Rundblad
Kuba or Carkner (1 will need to go, easy choice would be Kuba, but maybe a healthy camp will do him good.)

Anderson
FA

If Tanguay doesn’t re-sign with calgary, offer him a 2 year deal , Sign Bieksa
For 2 years , buy out Kuba, trade Lee, hopefully draft lando, Let the kids battle for spots in camp and develop down in Bingo.

Tanguay-Spezza-Butler
Landeskog-Da Costa-Alfie
Greening-Regin-Michalek
Foligno-Smith-Neil
Winnie/Condra

Phillips-Bieksa
Cowen-Karlsson
Rundblad-Gonchar
Carkner/Hale

Anderson
Auld/McBackup/Brust

Muller in as the head coach, Cameron as the assistant.

I'll go out on a limb and say Da Costa is more likely to be our 2nd line centre than Regin.

I wouldn't mind seeing any combination of this for our 2nd/3rd lines though:

Greening - Da Costa - Alfredsson
Foligno - Regin - Michalek

Our first line consisting of ??? - Spezza - Butler

Obviously this all depends on our draft, FA acquisitions and trades.

2011 - 2012 Ottawa Senators
Greening - Spezza - Butler
Michalek - Regin - Alfredson
Foligno - O'Brien - Condra
Z. Smith - Winchester - Neil

- if Murray does sign a UFA this summer I would guess that either O'Brien or Condra are returned to Bingo.

Gonchar - Kalrsson
Phillips - Lee - Lee could get traded at the draft.
Kuba - Carkner/Hale

- Cowen & Rundblad start the season in Bingo & await getting called up either through injury or due to a trade.

Andreson - McElhinney

Trade Deadline - Ottawa trades Kuba & maybe Carkner & one or two non-performing forwards to make room for a couple of the young D & at least one good forward in Bingo. Alfredson retires at the end of the season & maybe Gonchar.

If we draft Strome (likely), would he be expected to start up here?

This would be the starting point,

Butler-Spezza-Michalek (shooter-setup-net presence)
Greening-Strome-Alfredsson (net presence-setup-shooter)
Foligno-Regin-Condra (energy-size&setup-energy)
Smith-Winchester-Neil (toughness-toughness-toughness)
Shannon,Da Costa

Not 100% that butler or michalek are 1st line players but it's working so far.
overall, it looks good to me.
