Thomas Greiss (Re-Entry)

According to Bob MacKenzie's twitter

SJ puts G Thomas Greiss on 3e-entry waivers.

With 6 goalies under contract for next year and 1 RFA (Not including Greiss), I would suggest this is San Jose trying to get Greiss a spot elsewhere in the NHL before a glut of goalies floods the market.

Any takers?

The Islanders will take him.

EDIT:

Ottawa is a possibility as well.

if another team claims him, he cannot play for that team this season, right?

That is correct. But the season is almost over and some non-playoff teams might claim him.

With Vokoun being pretty likely to bolt, I could see Florida going after him.

Classy move by the Sharks.

Niemi is their starter and they just gave him a good extension and Niittymaki is signed for next year so there's no room for Greiss in San Jose anymore with a glut of goalie prospects also in the organization.

Gotta think he'll be claimed, especially since he'll be an RFA this summer and he would be property of the claiming team and couldn't just walk. The Senators and Panthers make the most sense to me.

Anderson/Greiss could be a nice tandem.

Greiss will be RFA at the end of the season, so there's no benefit on the 1/2 cap hit, but I could live with NJ making a claim, just to have another goalie around. He's not going to be Brodeur's replacement, but maybe he's a good backup for a couple of years.

I could definitely see Ottawa taking him (if he's available). I would much rather Greiss than McEltanky as the back up.

Personally, I don't think Brust is ready, and neither is Lehner.

No offense but I don't see PG claiming any young goalie.

I could the see Devils put in a claim. If anything for AHL depth since Jeff Frazee has been inconsistent.

I really doubt that he will be available by then.

Greiss didn't shine in SEL. Maybe he had trouble adjusting to the bigger icesurface or something. 90% in regular season and below 90% in the playoffs.

Should not be a big problem for him.
He is German and played in the DEL with the Cologne Sharks for 4 years.

I'm not as big of a fan of Greiss relative to the HF majority...the board was apoplectic when he got waived and you'd guess that 25 teams would put in a claim for him...he's got a shot on re-entry, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he cleared once more...

Leighton Went Unclaimed.

Goalies are worth nothing today.

He would go to the AHL for a season or so. That way price knows that he is the Number 1. ( He already knows he is but still). And then the year after that Back-ups price and then we flip him for a pick or something.

I'm sure Wilson had been trying to flip him for a pick since last year. Don't get your hopes up.

Heck, I'd be happy with just a 3rd rounder for him, but there weren't any takers.

I could see the Devils taking him as a cheap back-up/split duty with Brodeur next season.

Leighton is a 30 year old or so goaltender with no real upside on a so-so contract. He also has re-occuring back injuries, and has never proven to be a proven goalie.

Greiss is a goalie prospect, with 1B upside imo, and still a RFA. As said, an Anderson - Greiss tandem would look good.

Yessss... do it Ottawa. Some goaltending depth in the organization, finally, potentially.

Greiss played 0 games in the NHL this year. Forgot what the exact number is for minimum games to be classified a rfa, but he definitely didn't reach it with 0 games played so he will be a ufa not rfa at years end. Claiming him would just give a team some extra time to try to work a deal before he hits the open market.

I'd love for the Oilers to ditch Khabibourbon somehow and tandem him with Dubnyk next year.

RFA according to CapGeek. If UFA, my point is the same, 1/2 cap hit isn't relevant. His contract's up either way.
