I was ok with losing Knuble after this year. But $2 million is theft. Even if his game falls off a cliff and he's a bottom 6 wingers, $2 million is pretty fair.

I'm also a fan of letting him take some rest at the beginning of the season.

This should also put an end to the asinine DC as a Dark Horse candidate for Brad Richards rumors.

I think we have no cap space for Arnott, really.

Glad to see Knuble signed @ 2M

One more RW/season while Kuznetsov is still in KHL.

EDIT: McPhee will go with MP/Beagle/Gordon once again IMHO. Laich is also capable of being #3C in a pinch. Then deadline acquisition again. IMHO.

I bet Andrew Gordon is about the only one not thrilled with this signing.

It was unlikely either way but Johansson's play in the second half pretty well put to bed any notion of them inking a center to a big money, long-term deal.

The timing has more to do with Knuble's solid run to end the season. The tone of this signing helps when it comes to negotiating with a number of players (everyone except perhaps for Laich, whose loyalty is likely to be tested the most, though it can't hurt). I would guess that Laich cashes out elsewhere, though. Just a gut thing but we'll see. It's a flexible situation.

Arnott's a year-to-year player at this stage in his career and likely a player that values competing for a Cup more than cashing in to the utmost. He's younger than Knuble but has played in the NHL longer and in today's speed-oriented game you don't see as many older centers. I wouldn't think he'll still be playing at 40.

Late to the party, but yeah, happy to see this re-signing and the combo of dollars and one year. With the CBA ending and his 35+ status, I assumed he'd sign a one year deal, but wondered what the cap hit would be. (addn: this is the high end of what I hoped for, but I was hoping for 1.5-2 given all we know, so this works on a one year deal)

Random not really related, but from a cap math perspective from this season to next season: Semin's cap hit goes up 700,000 and Knuble's goes down 800,000 so that works pretty well.

The lack of a bonus cushion next year, hurts Knuble and the Caps to an extent. Obviously, a contract with a performance bonus on a 35+ 1 year was an option, but of limited value to the team or player if he was willing to sign for this amount. (value would have been only paying out what player 'earned' and for player, possible additional money depending on structure)

Love love love the deal. Even if his scoring dries up (which I doubt it does), he can still contribute as a bottom 6 guy. And I'm betting he's still going to post 18+ goals next year, anyway. Terrific addition. Bravo, McPhee and thank you Knuble for taking a very club-friendly deal.

Given that Andrew Gordon is a UFA, even without Knubles' signing I thought that his odds of staying in the organization were rather low. Even slimmer now. I wish him the best of luck in his new home and hope he sticks as an NHLer somewhere.

Looking at the roster, would it mean Arnott, Bradley, and maybe even Laich are gone?

The defense is another question.

Schultz for a grab bag of draft picks solves all cap problems.

I think rationally no one without a concrete contract (and a few who are, Sloan!) isn't safe.

The cap era means they won't keep everyone.

I do think they are trying their best to keep Laich. But i also think he's willing to wait and see what he gets offered. 4-5 million a season would be hard to pass up if he only gets 3.5 or so here.

Think P. McNeill and Orlov make the blue line interesting? Orlov probably won't be till mid season, but McNeill could be in from camp depending on if anyone gets moved.

I think Orlov's in Hershey for the year, and I've said that for a while now. nothing shown so far changes that. who knows, but I think that's the route they go with. No need to rush him into what is a pretty young group already. Hershey time has done no harm for anyone so far.

Two years ago, Knuble signed for $5.6m over 2 years. Inflate that a bit with the inflation of the cap since then, and you have $3m/yr for Arnott. I think that's reasonable. It's still a pretty considerbale pay cut for a guy making $4.5m.

Whether we can get him on a 1/yr deal is a big question. I'm not convinced we can. He's going to be looking for 2.
the last two seasons.

knuble
09-10 69 games 29g 24a
10-11 79 games 24g 16a

arnott
09-10 63 games 19g 27a
10-11 73 games 17g 14a

i think in the past two seasons that knuble has been worth more. he remains worth more.

i dont think bradley or laich are remotely gone. arnott is the only question mark. if he has a good playoffs and will sign a 1 year deal, the i think he stays as well.

the only player that i can think of during this current group that left when the team wanted him to stay was fedorov. that was because he needed a two year contract and mcphee wouldnt do that.

Bradley is redundant on this team. Hendricks and Beagle can both do the same job for less money and blood.

Knuble signing means that it's Arnott vs Hannan probably.

Also I think there is a problem that we need top2 defender and have some combination of rather expensive options in Schultz&Hannan&Poti while none of them is good for #2 (~9M altogether).

Dropping all 3 and getting somebody like Tyutin will make it much better overall top4 def crew. And it's very unlikely so probably Hannan will not be resigned in the end while Schultz and Poti will be kept. Sad thing.

Knuble is tougher than any of the 3 "defensive defenders".

Do we have another roster building thread for summer already?

Orlov will have the kind of year where he gets 10-20 games with the big club due to injuries, but nothing major unless he has a Carlson-like year down there, which would be expecting too much out of him.

I dont think the Caps see Bradley as redundant particularly in the case of Beagle.

20-30 goals, 40-50 points, 90 seconds of PK, great leadership, all for $2M. That's a bargain. Glad he took a discount to stay in DC. No question whatsoever he would've command more than his current salary on the open market.

This.

Personally, I take Hannan 10 times outta 10. I like Arnott, but we can again acquire another vet C at the deadline next year. Hannan has been a HUGE piece of the teams style transformation, and a vet leader. We need him to stay more than any of the unsigned parts (including Laich). Poti is not an every day D-man due to injuries. If need be, we send him to Hershey (he doesn't have an NMC, right?)

Great signing of Knuble!!!
