Thought I'd try to distract people until the lottery starts.
Simple question, should the Sens get Karlsson signed this off-season, do it during the season (as long as Karlsson is one of those players who will negotiate during), or should they wait to see how this next season goes?
Note: this is not a poll about what Karlsson should do, think of it as Karlsson wants to play here for years and years, and it's up to the Sens.
It'll be interesting to see how much he gets...Will it be like, a 2 year 2 mill a year contract, or will it be like, a 5 year 5 mill a year contract. It's hard to gauge what he's worth.

Hence why I don't think they'll sign him until some point next season at the earliest. I'll go out and say he doesn't get signed until after New Years, as both sides will want to get a better number to go into negotiations with.

Definitely have to wait til at least the final 3rd of the season, see where his development is by then. Maybe sign him during a rough patch
I could see a team throwing an offer-sheet at him..
If that was the case and we got 3 1sts... would u let him walk?
I don't think there is any offer where 3 firsts is an option.
But unless it was the 4 first, I wouldn't bother, 2 first wouldn't be enough IMO, this kid is special, letting him walk for picks would just set this team back.

I see what your saying, but what if Rundblad turns out just as good or god help us, ever better?

Then we're ****ing set for life.
A little bit of my comment is homerey and biased though, but that's just because I think Karlsson was a steal @ 15 and we wouldn't find anyone as good as him in that spot. (except Rundblad )

Karlsson was most certainly a steal at 15, i agree

I don't see there being a rush to sign him. An offer sheet is unlikely anyway. Look at guys like Parise, Weber, Doughty, stamkos. These teams didn't rush to sign them waiting to see what kind of year they had. I think karlsson will be the same, lets see how it plays out and do something in the offseason.

If everything works out for the better we could have the best defense in the East, especially if Brian Lee is for real.
Cowen - Lee
Rundblad - Karlsson
could be epic..
And then there's the boom or bust players like Wiercioch and Wideman..
What happens if we win the lotto or end up with Larrsonn from the draft? Lets say he and runeblad both play and play well this year, does Karlsonn become trade bait?

There aren't many players I'd throw out a long, long term extension to this young, but EK is one of them. The kid is special as special gets. I wouldn't be averse to signing him to a 10+ year extension, at a cap hit of say 4 - 4.5 mill per. I don't see him regressing anytime soon barring a bad injury.

Even if he got a 4 1st offer sheet, I'd really have to think about matching , depending on our cap situation of course. If it wouldn't hamstring us too much, I'd match even a 7+ mill per year sheet. Its unlikely any of the 1sts we'd get for him would be near his level of talent and vision. A PP point of Karlsson - Rundblad (if Rundblad ends up anywhere in the vicinity of Karlsson) would be feared for years to come, and could give us 2 very solid pairings of a shutdown guy with a PMD :
Cowen - Karlsson
Lee - Rundblad
(And maybe Wiercioch - Gryba on the 3rd pairing)
This D, if it develops the way it can, could be as good or better than even the Hawks D was last year, and Vancouver's this year).

Ottawa should try to sign him for relatively cheap to a loooong term deal around 3.5- 4 mill per for the next 10 year while they can with this one before he gets consistent defensively (and he shows he can with his smart positional play and high IQ). Or else he could be worth 6+ easy by then. Plus we have lots of cap space and the only other cornerstone guy signed for the next 6 years.

This, as long as we don't end up with Larson, WE get Larson and he turns out to be pretty good then EK could be an amazing trade chip a la Erik Johnson for Chris Stewart earlier this year. It's my understanding that STL only felt they could make this trade because they had Alex P.

STL did very well in that transaction because I never liked Erik Johnson as much as some others. The guy`s hockey IQ is severly lacking compared to his physical tools and skating.
For a dman, lack of elite IQ is death, especially if you expect him to be all he can be and this big all around stud. Mark my words, Erik Johnson will never reach his potential in STL, COL, or his next NHL team. Stewart isn`t expected to be s superstar anyway, but he will be a damn good player and a 30 goal power forward for a long time. Power forwards are so hard to get, even though Stewart lacks the nasty mean streak.
