Pronger confident he'll play against Sabres

Sounds promising.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=361969

Quote:
VOORHEES, N.J. -- Chris Pronger was in typical form, smiling, joking and giving vague answers.

A hand injury that has sidelined the Philadelphia Flyers' defenceman since March 8 hasn't affected his mood. Pronger still keeps it light, even with the playoffs approaching.

Is Pronger confident he'll play against the Buffalo Sabres in the first round?

"Very," he said Tuesday.

Will he play Game 1?

"I guess you'll have to wait and find out," he said.

Pronger skated and held a stick before practice, but didn't take any shots. He suggested he might try on Wednesday.
MOD EDIT:

http://www.csnphilly.com/04/12/11/Fl...532&feedID=695

Quote:
Chris Pronger skated again on Tuesday, but he didn’t shoot a single puck in 50 minutes of hard skating.

Of course, there’s always tomorrow, right?

Pronger strongly hinted that Wednesday will likely indicate one way or the other his readiness to play in Game 1 of the playoffs against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday.

He did say was “very” confident he’ll play during this series, but wouldn’t commit to Game 1. He hasn’t shot a puck at a practice since April 4.

“You’ll have to wait and find out,” he said of playing in the series opener.

One club source rated Pronger as “doubtful” for Game 1.

Pronger said he wasn’t discouraged at not shooting pucks so close to the playoffs.

“Come to practice tomorrow and see,” he said. “They might [change]. They change every day. Every day you feel better. Some days you have setbacks …”

Hopefully he sits out. He's old and slow and honestly I'd rather give the ice time to Mez. Carle doesn't need to be weighed down by this anchor either.

You don't ever want to risk losing a playoff game, but I rather not risk Pronger having a setback and losing him for more game than necessary.

Matt Walker brings that right hand shot that this hockey club has needed for a long time.

I'd expect him to say this, even if he lost his left leg in a small fire.

We need his precious ice time for Boynton, Bartulis, and Walker.

Proger's value is obviously dependent on his health but also the refs. If he's allowed to manhandle anything that enters the Flyers zone, he's a killer and difference maker. But if he can't, his speed is now in a low gear.

I saw an interview earlier where a reporter asked him to rate his pain from 1 to 10. He said, "Right now 10, because I'm talking to you."

If he has no pains or problems with his shot or pushing people, play him.

Agreed. Sabres speed is going to burn Pronger if he can't clutch and grab. That's all he's good for really

yeah but he can still throw his elbows around. he didn't win a stanley cup by being a good defenseman.

My money is him sitting until it is evident he is needed (regardless of injury). If they are up 2-0, you can bet that he won't play unless 100%. If they are down 0-2, he's playing even if he is on life support.

EDIT: By which I mean basically, that if he is not 100% he will play if needed. Obviously if he is 100% he will play.

Well, his witty banter is ready for a Cup run at least! His interviews are the best.

As a Sabres fan, I hope he's out. Somehow he gets away with murder come playoff time. He's effective.

This is a series against a team built for speed. I think the best option would be to bring up Syvret and maybe even give Kimmo a few games off and play Bartulis.

Coburn - Carle
Mez - Syvret
Bartulis - Walker/Kimmo

Isn't Barts completely done for the season?

An injured Bartulis is faster than a healthy Pronger.

True it was only a shoulder injury. But I'd prefer Gustafsson and Syvret in there. No sense in rushing Pronger back. Its not like he's that good anymore anyway. Maybe if were facing elimination put him in. At least he can steal some pucks

What if we play Prongs on our fourth line? He could really be a good tough guy to protect the players great checker and on the PP we could use him as a body in front of the net? Thoughts on this? I have been thinking this for a while

I'm surprised at the Pronger bashing, either my sarcasm radar is broken or I missed something, because I can't imagine a team in the playoffs not wanting Pronger on the bench even at half strength.
