Thomas was -2 with an assist tonight as Oshawa lost 5-3.

Thomas was decent tonight, definately had his opportunities, created chances but Visentin was an absolute beast in goal tonight.

Great news! I figured he would be included but this may be why the Rangers haven't rushed to try and sign him. They may want him to rest a little bit and then go practice with that team rather than getting 3rd line minutes in Hartford.

Good. This will be a perfect way to gauge his NHL readiness. If he's able to play at least as an average player on Team USA, he's ready. If he's the team's role player, then he's AHL ready. If he looks even a little lost out there, he should return to college.

Being average on the USA roster would not be a compliment. Their roster is far from all-star caliber (although some bigger names could still join).

Accepted Invitations:
F - Mike Brown (TOR)
F - Chris Kreider (NCAA/NYR)
F - Andy Miele (PHX)
F - Nick Palmieri (NJD)
F - Chris Porter (STL)
F - Ryan Shannon (OTT)
F - Jack Skille (FLA)
F - Tim Stapleton (ATL)
F - Yan Stastny (KHL)
F - Blake Wheeler (ATL)

D - Mark Fayne (NJD)
D - Jake Gardiner (TOR)
D - Mike Komisarek (TOR)
D - Kevin Shattenkirk (STL)
D - Mark Stuart (ATL)

G - Ty Conklin (STL)
G - Al Montoya (NYI)

He played last year and looked good as pretty much a 13th forward. He looks good in college too, he just didn't have the numbers. The same goes for the WJC.

With that forward group he should easily be receiving top 6 minutes. He's also the only returning forward.

Thomas with the lone goal for Oshawa in the middle of the 3rd period, but Niagra is beating up on them 5-1.

That puts NIA up 3-1, correct? Maybe Thomas will be in Hartford in time for some playoff action. I'd like to see how he looks against bigger competition.

Most of the players on Team USA are borderline NHLers or outright NHLers. If Kreider can be about the 6-8th best forward on that roster, then he's very close to cracking the NHL and should definitely leave college for the AHL because he'll probably make the Rangers at some point next season.

If he's the 3-5 best player on the team, then he has a 50-50 chance of cracking the Rangers. (If he's one of the best couple of players on the team, it's unlikely, but it would mean he's already NHL ready.)

But if he's a 4th liner on Team USA, odds are he's not going to crack the NHL at any point in the next 12 months.

I would still prefer that he goes to the AHL, but so long as he's no better than a WC fourth liner, I won't be upset if he went to college.

I don't know. I doubt he gets much ice-time regardless of how good he looks. I think it'll be tough to draw any conclusions. But, great to get a return invite.

I honestly won't read too much into it. I'm sure it will have more to do with chemistry than anything else. There are no stars. I think just practicing with professionals and getting more ice-time after his season is over is the main thing I am so happy about. It means another month and a half of skating.

Don't take this the wrong way R.E., but I think you might be overemphasizing the importance of one tourney on the kid. I doubt it affects his decision outright.

I agree with you. The problem is that I don't get to watch that many BC games. The primary way I (and 95% of the people here) judge our prospects are 1) preseason; 2) WJC; 3) WC; 4) reports from others including newspaper/websites, fans who watch games and scouting bureaus.

It's not the worst way to judge prospects either. It might be easy to dominate little 18 year old boys in college, but when you move up to play against those who are very talented (WJC) or older/stronger (WC), that's the time to judge how good you look.

If I had to watch only a dozen games a year per prospect, it would certainly be WJC and WC.

It's not a complete picture, but my full time job isn't to scout Ranger prospects, so I will never have a complete picture.

Oshawa is down 3-1 in their series to Niagara(Strome and Hamilton). Thomas might be available to sign an ATO to join the Whale.

Scott Stajcer won another game last night for Owen Sound as they swept Plymouth. Will the Rangers sign Stajcer? He is making a strong case for an entry level contract. Missiaen and Talbot are under contract for next season. Johnson is a group II who carries a $140,000 summer cap number.

He seems to be playing lights out in the playoffs, and his stats sure look hotter than Misiaen's. I'd like them tio give him a chance, but I haven't really seen either play and I'm not a scout, so what do I know?

I always liked the Stacjer pick. I would definitely keep him around and give him another chance this summer. He has a lot of qualities you want to see in a goalie.

How many goalies do the Rangers need to have though?

Hank
Biron
Johnson
Talbot
Missiaen
Stajcer

2 goalies at every level? NHL, AHL and ECHL unless Missiaen or Stajcer are brought back for overage seasons.....
