Does Phoenix have it that bad? Especially compared to other teams in the league?

I wouldn't see why the conferences would change, only divisions.

My likely thought is Winnipeg going to the Northwest and Colorado to the Pacific. That's the only geographical change that makes sense. That or put Vancouver in the Pacific (actually that probably makes more sense).

Either way, it seems like Winnipeg isn't that popular among the people who would actually be working there, oh well.

Frankly, I wish the league could just drop a few teams.

Phoenix
Florida
Atlanta
Columbus

The NHLPA would never go for that, but it would increase the talent level of every team and therefore probably the quality of play/competition, as well.

Agreed with Phoenix and Atlanta but I'm willing to give Florida and Columbus a little longer. Columbus is a market I actually like and drew well outside of the past couple of years it's just there's always a ****** product on the ice. No one's gonna go and see that. Same with Florida, they haven't been relevant since the late 90's and when they were, the place was packed. Florida could work with the amount of northerners that live down there. They just need competent management.

Phoenix is just dead it seems and Atlanta has always been a dead sports town outside of the Falcons.

Want these fringe hockey markets to survive financially? Screw parity and re-introduce the ability to trade $$$ for players/picks and even cap space.

Phoenix is losing $20m per year? Well the Rangers will pay them $20m for their unused cap space and 1st round pick!

Financial ruin averted!

EDIT: Don't forget that the Eric Lindros trade involved $15m in 1991 and the Gretzky to Los Angeles deal also included $15m in 1988 or 1989. Adjusted for inflation, that'd be almost $30m in today's dollars.

And the Columbus Blue Jackets trade Rick Nash and their 2015 first rounder for Matt Gilroy and $30 million.

I love it, takes money out of Dolan's wallet AND helps the team.

The NHLPA would never go for that, but it would increase the talent level of every team and therefore probably the quality of play/competition, as well.
that would also mean 368 less hockey games to watch each regular season. the NHL is pretty competitive as it is and even if you don't agree with that... if those markets can sustain a team, why wish for any of them to magically disappear?

Just out of curiosity, what team are you guys rooting for? Boston or Montreal? You can't say none of them, you have to choose one.

Montreal. I hate Boston with a passion. I hate the Habs, but I hate the city of Boston 10x more.

hard for me to say ONLY because i love tim thomas. if boston had any other goaltender i could easily say i'm rooting for the habs. i'm not sayin i'm rooting for boston. the bulk of their fanbase is pathetic... but i like thomas.

GO HABS!

Boston is a group of sore losers. They can't get it done when it counts.

I'm rooting for Les Habitants right now, but damn, if they do take Boston, I will be rooting HARD against them next round. I usually root for the Canadian teams, but the MTL fans are just insufferable.
