Don't care how good the shot blocking was, it is ABSOLUTELY INEXCUSABLE to go 0/5 on the powerplay in the playoffs at home. Completely inexcusable.
Regardless, the sabres did not deserve to win that game in any way. 1 lucky bounce gave them an undeserved win. If the offense plays even 10% better than they did tonight, I like our chances.

We need to control the Gaustad line somehow. Match the big D-men with them, because Carle or Timonen can't handle him.

Need to get people parked in front of the net. I like the movement on the PP tonight, but Miller will still stop what he can see.

We need Pronger.
Gaustad was noticeable because the Flyers won every other match-up. Gaustad is playing against HBL, so it's inevitable that his line will get offensive chances.

The other lines were fantastic at neutralizing whoever they were matched against.

The D played well. Probably the best since they lost Pronger. In fact they played so well, I doubt Pronger would help much in the D zone.

Failed Offense hurt that game.

Too many high and wide shots. Too many fancy passes. Put the puck on net and drive the net for the rebounds.
So having Pronger on the PP wouldn't have helped tonight?

After Pronger comes back I want to see him screening the goalie during power plays

Cartsiephan?

Anyway..yeah so far he isn't exactly disproving the detractors....need him and Richie to play like our best players being that they are our leaders (last I checked one had a C and the other an A). Lavy kind of threw the gauntlet down prior to the game saying as much indirectly....

Richards is battling the sniffles apparently and Carter...well I guess both his feet are broken...again

Again I think Lavy said it best..it's not the regular season where you can be happy with the process. It was good tonight but obviously it's not enough to go through a series just saying we are improving..say and do that enough and your are down 2 games to zero or 3 games to zero.

Let's HOPE this is just a blip. 7 games series..got to play them all afterall.....

Quote:
"Your leaders are your best players and you need to make sure they are in the forefront,” Laviolette said. “I’m confident that they will be.

The worst part was when he swung wide late during one of the PPs and fired a ridiculous shot that missed by a mile and flew around the boards and out of the zone, effectively killing off the rest of the man advantage. What a low percentage play.

Or having him blast a one timer from the point with someone in front!

Instead of what we had tonight, point pass with the player taking off one of his gloves, licking his finger to check the direction of the wind, then passing AGAIN.

Screening for him would make sense...his hand is not exactly shooting strength...he'll probably be back by game 3

The Sabres' goal wasn't a lucky bounce. It was the Sabres' most physical line (Gaustad line) matched up against the Flyers' least physical line (Briere line) and by far the least physical and worst defensive pairing (Syvret-Carle).

Flyers are struggling to find consistent offensive efforts across lines and aren't sustaining offensive pressure long enough to get scoring chances that result in goals. Passes to nowhere and everybody watching. Cycle game is decent, but eventually you need to have bodies going towards the net. That's how the only goal in the game was scored, as well. Gaustad stole the puck on the boards, pass went to the point, shot was taken low to produce rebound, Kaleta went to the net unimpeded.

Power Play is atrocious. One of the worst units I've seen the Flyers put on the ice for a long time. Should have converted at least one into a goal, and also wasted time. Seemed as though they produced less offensively on the Power Play than even strength.

Getting Pronger back can break apart a lot of these problems. The Sabres didn't really hit full stride much this game and took a lot of bad penalties. I'd say the series is still up for grabs, and luckily both teams have the same amount of games at home from this point.

He'll play in game 2, they can't afford to lose the first two at home. They need a spark and someone to light a fire under their #####.

See ya'll next game. Goodnight board!

No. Early on the PP did what it needed to do. We had good movement and even better, we actually had shots.

Eventually it did deflate again though.

Richards' post game interview annoyed me. Who cares if you played well defensively? You didn't win. Winning is the only metric right now and tonight was a failure. You thought the team played well tonight? Well guess what, what you think is playing well is a losing effort.

Were you watching the game? Versteeg played great. He and Richie set up quite a few chances. The guys played fine. Sabres got lucky. Chill out! Game one.

1. pronger desperately needs to come back to get the team sparked
2. the sabres played a 1-3-1 and laviolette is a good coach so he should be able to make adjustments in the flyers attack for game 2, but then again if the players dont wake up it wont matter
3. if the flyers can somehow get through to miller the tide will significantly change imo and they will get their flow
4. its one game, no need for y'all to panic yet its early and thats why its a best of 7
5. the flyers that i remember watching last year roll over the devils isnt remotely close to what i have seen lately, especially tonight....no energy, speed, and minimal grit (although i only saw about the last 8 mins, just based on that span)

It's 4 out of 7, not 1 out of 1. I'd rather lose and play well than lose and completely suck (aka the Flyers last 20 games).

I think what people on this board need to understand is that sometimes you lose even when you outplay the opposition. Outside of the PP, which didn't play great the last few PPs, the Flyers pretty much dominated this game. Ryan Miller made key saves when he had to and Kaleta was in the right place at the right time and got a nice goal off of a rebound. Bob played well and the team played well as a whole. Yes, they lost, but the series is far from over. Outside of Miller, the Sabres looked over matched almost the entire night. The Gaustad line got some opportunities, but that's about it. Tonight's game reminded me a lot of Game 2 of the SCF last year. Flyers outplayed them but lost. It happens. Not the first time and won't be the last time it happens.

Thought that girouxs behind the back pass to buffalo, was ill advised, Carter is tragic (i really want to appreciate this guy), piss-poor power play, why carcillo/nodl over z? Really? are goals gonna come that easily? Would z as a powerplay specialist really be that bad?
On the bright side Bob was solid when tested, JVR may just be having a break out P/O, d looked good, and there was some sustained pressure/cycling...just no freaking goals. My bet, we see the best of them on saturday.

We had a split bar in WV tonight and the Sabres fans were pretty arrogant, despite us having pretty calm Flyers fans. Oh well.

Bob's rebound control is awful, which includes the goal allowed. Otherwise he played ok.

As for our offense, we need more shots. About 95% of our shots were wide of the net or into Miller's crest. We obviously won't score that way.

We outplayed them all game.

I don't think Bob looked very good tonight. Even though he only gave up one goal, he kicked some rebounds around, and being out of position on a shot from the point lead to the only goal.

The PP was pretty effective early, but when it wasn't putting pucks in the net players went back to being selfish. Both Giroux and Briere were guilty of trying to do too much late in the game on the PP.

If the Flyers keep getting pucks to the net, and start getting bounces they should win the series. But surrendering a game they should've won early in the series is problematic.

.
I thought he was fine for his first NHL playoff game. He gave his team a chance to win. He did his job. You give up 1 goal you should expect to win.

it is play-off, only W counts, not 'outplaying' or 'controling', as I recall according to many Flyers outplayed Pens twice in play-off recently, both times they played in SC final... and Bob wasn't problem, stop with this bs
